delayed postoperative hemorraghe after partial nephrectomy

Hi Everyone,

I´m new here and have alot of questions. My husband Daniel was diagnosed with Stage 1Grade 2 RCC in February. After almost two months of agonising wait he had a partial nephrectomy on April 13th to remove the 3,5 cm tumor. No mets, no lymph node involvement.  Everything went very well and he was released 12 days later. He was home for a week when he began having extreme pain on his incision side and his abdomen kept swelling up like a balloon. Long story short he is back in the hospital after an emergency room visit. I am extremely worried because the doctors first said that it was weak abdominal muscles, then it was a hematoma, and now it is internal bleeding from the kidney. Has anyone had something similar happen to them and how is something like that treated?  So far he has been given an ice pack, antibiotics, and heparin shots which I would think would be counterproductive.  Bedrest is also a must. Very scared and worried. Thought that the cancer diagnosis and surgery was badUndecided...

Welcome to the club no one

Welcome to the club no one wants to join. It is my understanding that this is a risk of a partial, although rare. Hang in there, it will get better. Ron

    Risks of surgery

    Step,

Unfortunately any surgery crries a small risk of complications. The greater risk though was not having the surgery as RCC spreadding is much worse.

Hopefully your husband's issues will resolve themselves over the short term.

    Does anyone remember who it

Does anyone remember who it was who had the bleeding problem and they used coils around the kidney to finally stop it? I remember reading it but now I can't find it. I hope it's resolved quickly, you must be so worried. And you didn't mean he was in the hospital for 12 days after the surgery, did you?

    Coils

Hi, it was Sable2900 who had the bleeding problem. She had been home for a little while when she started bleeding. She was rushed back into hospital to have coils fitted. The coils seemed to do the trick initially and she was discharged. A while later she had the same happen again so the procedure was repeated along with antibiotics.

She is doing very well now, everything has healed up well and she has had no further problems. Stephi I know that the circumstances may differ somewhat, but it may well be worth asking if this procedure would help your husband too

    Hope all goes well

    Sometimes

things don't always go as planned. But keep the faith. It isn't always easy. Just keep looking forward to when things are going to be better. Keep that goal in mind.

    Hi Stephi.

Hi Stephi.  I'm really sorry to hear about this set-back in your husbands recovery.  I hope that he will be back home very quickly.  Re all those things you are pondering:  make a list of questions and ask the doctor to explain.  The R.N. taking care of your husband should also be able to explain what is going on and why they are doing what they are doing.

    Great memory, Djinnie, glad

Great memory, Djinnie, glad you found it! Yes, it would be worth checking it out if nothing else works. I'm also curious why he's on an anticoagulant when the problem is bleeding. Must be a reason.

    What I said.

Keep panic at bay. It takes too much non-recoverable energy. It serves no effective purpose. Crap happens. Ask DJ and Sindy, and Ron, and Jojo, and ..... I really think that we can put a spin on most rotten events. It becomes so much easier to deal with and the results are better. Good news!

Good news..!  This is what we sre here for.. to help when we can.  We do not have all the answers... but.. we will try... plus there is someone around here basically 24-7 so feel free to holler at us at any time.  We all help each other.. and yes as Da Fox Man said.. we also try to put the nail polish on the pig... or is that sugar on the medicine..?  Either way we try to keep each other moving forward... ho hum...  back to motorcycles and alcohol.. and perhaps women... Oooops.. all the women here are attached... but I can still look..!!

    Glad things are looking up..!!

Hi Stephi, so glad to hear

Hi Stephi, so glad to hear hubby is doing better!  I would strongly discourage him from ANY heavy lifting for AT LEAST 6 months following his neph....especially since he's already having a problematic recovery.  Trust me on this one!   I'll keep you both in my prayers!
