Blood clot in urinary bladder

I just got ouf the ER.  I was unable to urinate and when really push, only blood came out.  Went to hospital and irrigated my bladder for 24 hours.  Lots of blood and purple clots came out.  Ultrasound showed a large blood clot inside the bladder.  They finally cleared it with catheter.

I had one round Cisplatin about 2 weeks ago.  Could this have been a side effect of it?  The urologist said they don't know.  However, he said the tissue is not cancerous.

Did anyone had similar experience?

Never again will I take it for granted that I can pee.

    Bet that hurt

Urinary retention is a true emergency.  Hope you feel better now.  There can be a number of causes for the problem, but related to the cisplatinum the most likely one is low platelett count.  It isn't uncommon to have a minor amount of bleeding from the bladder.  But if the platinum has knocked your platelett count low, the bleeding doesn't stop.  Then you have a problem.   Same result happens if you get a urinary infection, bleeding leads to a significant problem.  I'm with them that the cause of this is likely not going to be a huge problem, but sheesh, sometimes when it rains it pours.

That's true Pat.  A few bumps along this arduous road.  System back to normal now.  All blood tests were normal.  Just came back from my 11th radiation treatment.  Twenty-two more to go.

    Cisplatin

I know when my husband was undergoing his first round of treatment they used Cisplatin.  Cisplatin lead to him having a problem with his kidneys and it was mainly due to him not taking in the water he needed to flush his kidneys.  He did not have a blood clot.  Chemo has a lot of side effects and this is something you should discuss with your oncologist.  I know that we were told chemo can damage your kidneys.  My husband was supposed to have 3 treatments of Cisplain 3 weeks apart.  But the oncologist divided the second treatment in two parts and never did the third.  Second round of treatment they used Carboplatin and he didn't have any problems with that.

Just remember everyone reacts differently to their treatment but if it were me, I would discuss this with the oncologist before your next round of Cisplatin.

Wishing you the best -- Sharon

    what a curious problem

Cisplatin isn't known to cause hemorrhagic cystitis, but other chemotherapies do.  Were you on any other agents?

No, only one round of Cisplatin and daily dosage of radiation to the nose and neck.

Thank you for the recommendation.  Yes, I have an appointment with my chemo oncologist tomorrow.  I will discuss the issue with him and bring up the alternative that you have described if he doesn't have an alternative for me.

    Thanks.

Wow, glad you are out of the hospital and now able to pee. getting catched is no fun, but it does brimg releif.

The first thing that hits me is, Are you drinking enough? I can imagine that drinking is getting harder to do eat passing day, but you MUST stay hydraded *sp?

The radiation/chemo/strss is probably sucking you dry.
