First Scan Post Treatment

Options

Hi all - have my first scan post treatment tomorrow morning. Will then receive the results Thursday. I have been getting checked every four weeks but tomorrow will be exactly six months post treament and the first scan since the fun began. I thought I had been doing ok in the lead up but today (Sunday) the 'fear' as I call it, has come in hard. I would imagine things will be pretty slow this week up until Thursday. I would be interested to hear any hints / suggestions on how to control the fear in the lead up.

    good news this week

    Duendintech,

Way to go 6 months.  How is your taste and dry mouth (I have to ask)?

Hints for dealing with scanxiety or “fear” as you call it.  I just happen to have a copy of the H&N Guide to dealing with anxiety; I’ll sell it to you for 5 bucks (just kidding).  I go through the mental pain just like you.  Are you a drinking man?  Neither am I.

You just have to trust your team did a bang up job and that all that discomfort relieved you of the beast.  You have been doing ok leading up to 6 months and you will be doing ok leading away.

Have a clean scan and NED results.

    Matt

    not an expert

It's normal to be anxious. I don't really have any nuggets of wisdom.

    Go with the fllow

We all experience some "scanxiety" come scan time. The "everyone is different" mantra rings true in this situation as well. Other than some butterflies the night before, I was fine. I actually dozed off in the prep room getting juiced and dozed a bit in the machine. They wrapped me up with nice warm blankets, strapped me in and put on some good music. I had appointments for blood work and to see my RO and SLP so I was busy running right afterwards. By the time I saw my RO a couple hours afterwards I had a prelim result and it was fine. The official results (which were fine) came back a day later.

As far as a hint to get through this? It's an attitude thing really. No different than coming to grips with your initial diagnosis. My MO summed it up nicely when I discussed this with her. She said, "You'll never be cured. You'll always be a survivor." That's why they don't say cured, they say "No Evidence of Disease"

Think of it like a part of treatment. It sucks but you have to do it. Get back into battle mode for the next few days.

Good luck, positive thoughts and prayers.

    I had anxiety here

for the first scan and I am not the patient. LOL

My hubby was the patient and he didn't mention if he had anxiety about it but I am sure he did.

Matt here, read the results and pronounced him NED. He had his first scan 3 1/2 months out and will have another in Dec.

You will get the clear results and we will all celebrate with you.
