First day rad

My first day at rad today. I was apprehensive early this morning not knowing what to expect, that included the hospital transport. I needn't have worried, the transport turned up on time, I was the first pick up  8.30 then we picked up another head and neck patient, followed by a terminal stomach cancer patient. I was in the waiting room for 10 minutes before I was called in for treatment. it wasn't too bad I managed being in the mask without a panic attack. the transport left straight away so I was home by 11. 45. That was quicker than I expected,  was prepared for a whole day waiting around, I took my ipad, 2 smoothie drinks and a bottle of water but didn't need any of it. I,ll. be more relaxed tomorrow. it was theraputic to be with people who had same as me. my family are sympathetic but don't understand what you go through, because I've not made any complaints and played down the treatment they think it's just a doodle. I'm worrying now that I shall get my partners head cold, he's bunged up in the throat and nose, I ask about what happens if I get a cold in my nose..could I use throat and nose spray but they said ," no, that could make me sore"  I have to go ahead whatever otherwise it upsets the rad course.  Know as time goes by side affects will kick in............

    Sounds Good...

Sounds like you had a good day..., keep it in your pocket for the days that might not be as good...

Try to limit your exposure as best you can on the cold situation... Your onco might be able to prescribe some antibiotics or meds for you either preventive or treating if you get the cold..., communicate with your MD's...

Stay hydrated...., enjoy the saliva & taste while you can.

    Best,

    John

    now the main act starts

    Hi Jackie,

Glad  you made it through the first day as you now know the drill for the next seven or so weeks, it is exactly the same, except maybe once a week you get a few more minutes while they run an extra alignment test, no big deal.

Now - the key to making it through this is three simple things.

HYDRATION - NUTRITION - PAIN MANAGEMENT

It really is as simple as that. You keep these three areas covered and you will survive and come out the other end.

Enjoy the free ride now. Things will start feeling worse in about 10 days and just hurt and become harder but you will get through it, everyone does.

    Best of luck, don

    You still have

10 days or so of free reign at mealtime....so eat up girl!!

Would your partner be willing to wear a mask until he's not catchy any longer?  Or maybe you might want to wear one, if he's not willing...also hand washing many times during the day.  Most colds are spread by touching a contaminated place, then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.  You're not getting chemo, so your immune system should stay pretty much the same as it's always been.  Hopefully, he sneezes and coughs into his elbow to keep from spreading the germs.

Anyway, congrats on getting things started....this will go faster than you think....same stuff everyday, with the weekends off (I loved weekends!!).

    Here you go

    JF22,

Very good, first doodle complete, more of the same ahead.

I wondered about getting sick during treatments, but never did.  I hope you dodge that bullet too.

Listen to what others have said, this ride can get rough.  Work with your body to figure out what works for you, things may not be straight up normal for a bit.

    Best always,

    Matt

    good advice taken on board

I've taken all your good advice on board and will do the three vital things..hydration, nutrition and pain control and another one someone said ..give in to fatigue dont fight it. I had a new treatment list given to me today with the dates and times every day mon to fri around 10.20 which gives me the afternoons at home and the treatment has an extra 3 initials that I don't understand  HNR IMRT. I've started up with a runny nose tonight guess I'm getting 'him indoors's cold' I've moved into the spare bedroom for the duration of the cold but already been in contact with the build up of the germs. I will just have to go along with it, I have flu jabs every year and dont get bad colds like he does, he's a smoker and wont go to a doctor for anything, let alone a flu shot.  It  goes to his head and  chest.  I'm nursing him now as he was 'waiting' on me hand and foot when I had my surgery. Roles reversed. I have my daughter with us for 4 days, she was my standby if the transport didn't turn up, she will be here the last 2 weeks also and said she can get time off work if needed. I'm hoping to cope myself, all you out there have coped and still worked (many of you) and driven yourselves miles for treatment.  I don't have to go far about 28 miles round trip, don't drive myself as I sedate before going in for the 'mask'.

Only a guess on the "HNR"...

    Head/Neck Radiatrion?

I hate to be a party pooper (after all, until I was 30 something, "party" was my middle name)....but I've got to say something about your man's smoking.  I'm hoping that he's decided that smoking outside is the only place to do it, and you're not breathing it in.  Many oral cancers come from smoking.....and I don't know what the odds are with second hand smoke....but imagine they are higher than being around no smoke.  My husband quit smoking within 2 weeks of me being diagnosed (I'd quit 3 years prior to that), but I'm sure my smoking had a lot to do with my cancer.

You asked in a post earlier if the ecigs work to quit.....yes they do!!  For one thing, they only have 3 ingredients...not 1003 ingredients like processed tobacco....when I went to ecigs I noticed only a slight withdrawal, over in two days....they still have nicotine, but in and of itself, it's not nearly as addicting as whatever they put into tobacco.  I started out at a high nicotine level, and weaned myself off slowly....started at 36 mgs.....moved down to 24 mgs....then 18.....then 12......then 8.....then 0 mgs.  Also started out having a portable one I used in the car, or when I was out and about with friends.....plus one plugged into my computer....the portable one I said goodbye to early on.....and then the only time I even puffed on it was at the computer.  No matter what tho....his blowing vapor in the house is far healthier for you than smoke...(and it's healthier for him, too!!).

    The Countdown Begins

    JackFlash,

Next thing you know you'll be posting about the halfway mark and then the single digits. Just wishing you the best as you begin this part of the journey. It's a relief to know you're actively joining the battle. This is the road that has all the potholes and detours. As DonFoo said... NUTRITION, HYDRATION AND PAIN MANAGEMENT! ... those are the keys to getting through this. It ain't easy but you've been armed with some good info and we got your back!

    Positive thoughts and prayers

    "T"

PS.. I think I may have mentioned this. I named my cancer "Jack" after Jack Nicholson from "The Shining". I left him dead and frozen like the end of the movie ;) So... go kick Jack's A$$ again for me will ya!?

    HNR

See what happens and why we say not to Google stuff...

The only thing I found readily and medically related to HNR was Human Normal Rectum...., LOL.

So my presumption is that what I found was not related to her IMRT protocul..., and that's the "END" of my searching for HNR IMRT...

    the worst times

    Hi,

Most folks thing that when treatment ends, they will start feeling better and have less side effects. Radiation is a treatment that keeps on working and the accumulated effect generally has folks feeling the worst 3-4 weeks once daily rads stop. Just keep this in mind when it comes to planning for when you think you need to most help. don

    Thanks for that

That gave me a laugh...human normal rectum.... I tried to find it. I could have asked  the nurse at rad today but didn't,t think of it, it doesn't,t really matter I was just curious. I was fine with the mask today will try without diazepam soon.  I was talking to the rad operater today, I wondered what she can see from her safe room. she can see an X-ray of my spine alignment,  she said the machine also sends out protective rays to stop the rays hitting your spine or healthy bits, it's all so clever.I wish I had studied medicine I find it fascinating........
