The Cancer Ward is a semi-autobiographical novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, first published in 1967, and banned in the Soviet Union in 1968. The novel tells the story of a small group of terminal patients in the hospital "cancer Wing # 13" in 1955 in the post-Stalinist Soviet Union.
This is not an easy beach read by any means; but it is the most moving and life-affirming book, the perfect balance of depression and hope. I read The Cancer Ward in Russian for the first time 30 years ago; I read it again last year after I got diagnosed and I enjoyed it much more from a totally different perspective.

In chapter 11 (Cancer of the birch tree) the author describes a natural cancer cure used in Russia and Scandinavia for centuries - chaga mushroom. If anyone is interested - I have been buying it off http://www.oriveda.com/chaga.php
