Treatment Unsuccessful

The latest CAT Scan indicated that the chemo did not slow or reverse the spread of the cancer. Therefore, the chemo has been discontinued and the cancer is left to run its course. I should expect "months" to live rather than "years".
For a short time, I will feel better as the side effects of the chemo wear off.  There is a lot to absorb. The outcome did not come as a complete surprise; but I was on the other hand not quite ready for it

I am so sorry to hear your news.  I have no words of my own that I could possibly say to you in a time like this.  Here is one of my favorite benedictions found in the book of Numbers:

The Lord bless you and keep you;

the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you:

the Lord life up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

May God's grace and peace be given to you and your family during this difficult time.

I don't know what to say except I am saddened to hear this news.  Words seem so weak when what I want to do is reach out and protect you....if only I could.  I will be keeping you tucked in my pocket....and sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.  We are always here when you need to talk.

A miracle may find you and change this prognosis.  My heart sank when I read your post.  Your avatar and name always inspired me and if anyone deserves "To Be Golden" it is you.  It saddens me to think that you are not being offered any options.  Since you were told to simply 'give up' and let cancer run its course, have you sought second opinions, explored clinical trials or taken a look at alternative therapies?

So sorry to hear.  Enjoy each day as it comes and remember no one but the man upstairs knows how much time we have.  I remember 6 months ago when we found out that my husband's cancer, which started as laryngeal first and for which he was and still is NED, was found to have a second primary at the cervical of the esophagus and treated but only NED for about 4 months and then reoccurred and spread to his right lung.  The doctors said only chemo but Joe declined any further treatment.  In actuality he is doing okay today, does what he wants when he wants and still enjoys each day for which I am very grateful to the man upstairs.

My prayers and thoughts go out to you and each on this board who are having to deal with this beast.

I haven't been on CSN for a few days and when I do I find your disturbing news. I hope and pray there is a miracle in your name. My brother in law who is a priest (Father Joe) comes up most Sundays for dinner, and I will make a special request for you today.

I basically sit here speechless except for................. Cancer Fu---ng Sucks.

I've heard this many times before as an oncology and hospice nurse.... BUT miracles do happen. I've actually had to discharge patients from hospice because after 5 years they're condition did not worsen. Don't give up on yourself. Find out what foods are best for your body. Stay positive, live life to the fullest, and don't believe everything the professionals have to say. Our 'Western' medicine isn't the only remedy out there.

God Bless you.

I'm so sorry to hear this...I don't think there is anything anyone can say.  Praying that you are able to find peace at this time...

P.S. A lady I cared for had cancer and she lived many years past what they expected her to so I'll be hoping that your time here is more than doctors suggest.  So sorry I can't offer any other words that may help...just hope and prayers your way...

I have edited my comment to remove the original link and appreciate the information you provided showing it to be based in quackery.  I will send your review link to a friend who is trying to raise funds for receiving similar treatment in Mexico (dendritic cell vaccine) for prostate cancer.  The clinic in the Bahamas as well as the one in Mexico are very persuasive in their website promotions and it is understandable that cancer patients and their friends & families want to believe in the therapy (mea culpa).  For the treatment to be a sham is the worst kind of wrong.  You have performed a valuable service by posting that link exposing the quacks.

Rick,

I am praying for a miracle for you. Last July they gave Jim months to live. His latest CT showed it had grown a little but the doctor was amazed at how healthy Jim was. We attribute this to prayer, whey protien and Barley Max powder. The Barleymax powder is loaded with enzymes. Jimhas not been able to get off his feeding tube since treatment so maybe the Osmolite and Jevity with all its' vitamins have helped to. The doctor is totally blown away by this miracle. So keep the faith and I will keep you in my prayers. If you want to try the Barleymax the site is: hacres.com

God Bless

for this latest news!  I DO want to agree that doctors are not God!!  They give you their best guess, according to their experience and medical journals they have read, but we're all individuals with different outcomes.  We're all hoping for a miracle for you!  I would offer that maybe there's a trial somewhere you can join, maybe holistic medicine might have some help, please keep fighting!  We care!

Golden,

It's been awhile since I've checked this site and now I read your dx.  So sorry Rick.  I cannot imagine what is going through your mind now that you've been told that.  No words will help get rid of it but they hopefully make you feel a bit better.

You are and will stay in my thoughts.

Sorry to hear this Rick, I have thought all along that you would make it and I am not going to change that now. On Laryngectomy Life Christine's husband Larry was given a similar prognosis, that was quite a few years ago and he is still around enjoying his two whiskeys each evening in Wales. Go back to LL and hitch up with Christine for Larry's story, it will, hopefully, give you a lift. Take care my man. Denis

Rick,

First, I'm sorry the tx wasn't successful as was hoped. Second, Never Give Up!

I know you're tired and it takes a lot of effort just to type this to us...but I know your fighter.

I will pray that you are granted peace and that a miracle comes your way.

God Bless,

~C

Rick,

You’re the Class Act around here and an inspiration and a friend to many.  Agree with the others – keep kicking butt!  Heard too many stories where the docs totally miss their guesstimate time-wise.  Fat lady ain’t singing yet – hope you’re around for a long, long time.

Positive thoughts and some good mojo being sent your way!

I'm praying for you! Contact Hondo about the treatment he received from Honduras. My brother got it and is really impressed with the great effects from it. You're a fighter, never forget that. Don't let the doctor's words and this cancer have the power over YOUR body!!

Don’t give-up, I know it looks bad and I know you have already accepted the outcome but don’t give up. I am not sure why I am still here but back in 2006 when my C came back a third time I was only giving a 5% chance of surviving a year if I took chemo. I opt out of anymore treatment and asked my Wife to let me go home one more time before I died. I had a lot of people praying for me and for no reason the C just stopped growing. I did a biopsy about a month ago my ENT said I am sorry I have some Bad news the pathology report came back positive for NPC. I said oh no problem; it’s been that way for 8 years now. My C is still alive living in my sinus but not growing; anything can happen with prayer and I am praying for you my friend.

God be with you till we meet

Tim
