As a Veteran myself, I thank you Susie for wishing all veterans a Happy Veteran's Day. I was so young when I spent 4 yrs. in the Marines. I was 17 when I joined in 1969 and 21 when I was Honorably Discharged in 1973. WOW! That seems like a lifetime ago now that I look back at it.

My dad is a Word War II veteran and served in Europe. The end of the war (VJ day) he was on a ship back to the US and knew he would be transferred to the Pacific. Then came the news that the war had ended and he said it was a moment to remember. He was extremely grateful knowing that his time in the military was going to be over, he wasn't going to Japan and instead married my mother.

There are not many WWII veterans around anymore. He is 91 years old. Last year in an email he told me, as a child, he and his two brothers would stand at attention, saluting when the town siren went off on November 11th at 11 AM in honor of the end of WWI. He wanted to live long enough to see 11/11/11 and he did last year.

It is a good day to remember all those who gave time to be in the service, and those who paid the ultimate price, their life.

A few years ago, I took a tour of the D-Day beaches and went to the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer in France. The many white crosses and Star of David took your breath away, so many American men that had died in basically one week. The grave stones all faced toward the US. The shear number of people who lost their life in that week. There were British, Canadian and German cemeteries and image with the same number of dead men. It totally humbled me at the lost of life these brave men.

Weather permitting - I will be going to Black Hills National Cemetary tomorrow or Mon.

I, too, have seen many WWII Cemetaries in France/Europe - but I sawthem as a child (6-9 y/o, 1952- 1955). Daddy was stationed in France then and on vacations we visited the route tht the Grey Bonnets had gone from Normandy to VE day. Mom really wasn't interested in going to any of the battlefields or cemetaries but being the "Daddy's Girl" I was - it was great to go with him.. The rows upon rows of markers waere something that words can not convey - especially when seeing some and learning something about who they were personally there.

My BeLoved Veterans:

Daddy - pre-Pearl Harbor Army, (Uncle Cabbie was Navy at. Pear), married Mom, went in D-Day plus 1, too many places/battles to write, came home, I was born and 2 days later he to Japan for occupation. After the Air Force was formed, he went to it - so basically I was an AF 'brat'. He retired on 26 yrs.

Dad - my FIL - was at 'Frozen Chosen' (Korean Police Action ) and 3 tours in 'Nam - retired USAF.

Ma - my MIL - was USAF duringn Korea Police Action.

Bobby - BIL - Navy - died on A/D..

My Guy - Hubby of 36 yra. Retired Navy. There is so much I could say about him but will say that I'm jealous of our Sons. When he mde his last cruise, the boys flew out to Hawaii for the Tiger Cruise to come back home on the. Ranger with him after Desert Storm.. (I was on the pier when he left on his first cruise and I was on the pier when he and our Sons cam back from his last.Cruise.)

Dear Susan,

You have a very remarkable family. I enjoyed reading your post and your family's contribution to our country.

Where would this country be if we didn't have family like yours? A good Veteran's Day to you and yours.

Best,

Doris

In the army in Korea. He was a medic and was awarded 3 bronze stars, one with valor. He was supposed to receive the silver star, but was discharged and never received it. Dad liked the service so much, he joined the air force shortly after he married mom. She refused to move, so he didn't re-enlist. Dad is now in assisted living at the VA.

I am a child of the 50's and 60's, therefore the Vietnam Nam era. When I was 15, I read a Dear Abby column about becoming a pen pal with a serviceman. So I sent my name to the marine newspaper, the Sea Tiger. I had 56 replies! I babysat to earn money for postage - airmail was a dime. Of course, times 56. Also, I went to the local dept store where they had a photo booth. You got 4 pictures for a quarter - maybe it was 50 cents. Sent them all a picture and continued writing for quite awhile.

Anyway, about 5 years later, I received a beautiful card from one of those marines, thanking me for my letters, telling me how much they meant to him - just to receive mail 'from the world'.

Anyway, that was 38 years ago. Veterans Day always makes me remember that.

Thanks for the post,

Sue
