For those of you in the path of Sandy, please keep safe.
We expect rain here but we are south of the main impact so
don't expect a lot of trouble although we are getting snow
in the mountains/higher elevations (western NC).

Hopefully, Sandy will be kind.

Sandy Updates (ABC)

Hugs,

Jim

I was in Charleston when Hugo hit in 1989. It was a Cat IV, however. Gusts at Awendaw, SC, on the coast, were clocked at 176 MPH ! We got power back 11 days later ... Sandy is a cute little baby storm in comparison.

Be safe,

max

John, I see you did okay in Geography ;).
I moved to Houston right after Alicia hit way back in the early 80's.
There were places without power for two weeks I think. I remember
driving to Galveston and seeing boats that were way inland because
of the hurricane. People I knew who worked for phone and utility
companies worked double shifts for weeks.

I also remember (a little ;)) going out with a bunch of friends to
weather out Gilbert - we drank too much - the bars were packed with
us fools making a "party" out of it. The silly things we do when young :).

My brother-in-law from a few miles up the Hudson said they got a little rain and some gusty winds, no damage.

Compared to the storms in the Southeast, Sandy is a non-entity, but of course the news will scream diaster for days. People who live directly on the coast ought to know better. Snow machines that move 7 feet of snow cannot, apparantly, move 18 inches osf sand...

News photographers will drive all day to click one picture "bad enough" to submit, and that becomes the world's vision of what happened everywhere.

Wall Street is already re-opening Wednesday. In two weeks, folks will vaguely remember that a storm passed through.

Dear Jim,

Thank you so much for your concern. Yup, I am in the path of hurrican Sandy. No need to evacuate. I live in the suburbs of New York. The problem in my area. There are trees surrounding my house and trees all around. You know what that means? We will probably lose power. Oh well. Nothing to do about it. Cabin fever here we come.

Stay well and safe Maggie

I hope everyone weathers the storm OK.

Unfortunately this storm, I assume, will delay receipt of my 2nd opinion from Sloan Kettering.I was to receive that today or Tuesday.

I was hoping to have that for my husband's trip to Mayo on Wednesday :(

Thanks for all the well wishes! Wind is kicking up. Expecting major flooding. And I get a day off work tomorrow! Never a loss without some small gain. :)

Winds also picking up here in Northeast Pa. I guess I will not sleep much tonight. There are a group of old trees located about 12 ft. from my bedroom window so I will not be sleeping in that room tonight. At least I don't have to worry about any flooding issues. To all those living in the affected areas, be careful and stay safe.

Hello everyone,

Everything was going good until 6 PM last night, Monday. Everything went out. I had no
power until 10 AM today, Tuesday. I couldn't believe it when the power returned so fast. There are others further upstate who will not get power for over a week. I was told if I lose power, I would be able to use my cell phone, which I did. Family members and friends
called and offered to pick me up last night. I declined. My thought was, if I still had no power today, Tuesday I would leave. Surprise, surprise, now they have no power. I might be hosting family and friends tonight. My pleasure of course.

NYC is very bad. No transportation, such as subways, buses, and commuter rail. New Jersey is a mess, PA, and Connecticut also.

Right now I am reflecting back to my first night of no power, Monday. I lay in bed, with full exposure to the outside. Complete silence and darkness. I still could see the trees swaying back and forth from the wind. I opened my window ever so little and just lay there. Finally I fell asleep ever so peacefully until 8 AM this morning, Tuesday.

Please don't mis-understand by my paragraph above. This is such a tragedy for so many. So many thought they were safe in their homes and were killed when a tree came down on their homes. A few looked outside their windows and saw calm. A good time to take the dog for a short walk. No words needed here. For others, no power, and no promise of power soon. My thoughts right now, I am relieved family and friends are safe. There is an old willow tree outside one of my windows. I was so relieved to see it still standing this morning.

Thank you for reading my post. My Heart went into every single word. Love you all.

Maggie

Thanks, Maggie. I'm glad you're okay and things weren't so bad
for you. I watched part of the coverage last night and read
a little in the wee hours this morning. I've been gone all day -
had to take a 3 1/2 hour drive to help out a friend and just got back
and am exhausted.

I liked your description before you went to sleep :).

Hugs,

Jim

Just checking in after the storm to say all is well at my home in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. There are many affected by power outages in this area, but I guess I lucked out on that.

My thoughts and prayers are with those so severely affected by the hurricane in New York, New Jersey and other areas.

Hi all,

We got hit pretty hard by Sandy here in NJ and the surrounding area. I am so sad for those that lost loved ones, lost their homes or suffered a lot of damage.
We lost power for two days, have a lot of debris in our yard and have been slightly inconvenienced with empty store shelves, trees blocking roads and gas lines. No big deal in the long run.

I am also sad about all the damage down the shore. Seaside has been given a bad name by "The Jersey Shore" but it truly holds so many memories for those of us who grew up here and now it's gone. Just one of those sad little losses that really gets to you.
For a Category one storm Sandy sure had some crazy wind - it was scary and I've been thru many hurricanes in my life!

Thank you all for your concern for those of us in the path!

BTW: I get my blood tests and CAT on Friday (was supposed to on Monday but THAT got postponed! ) and my Oncologist visit on Tuesday to discuss the results and decide about maintenance chemo! Praying for GREAT results!

Hugs,
Donna
