Chemo cancelled again due to low platlets. Freaking out because every time this happens my CEA goes up. Next week trying again but it will be a month since chemo. Devasted today.
That's what started happening to me, Vicki...one week became two weeks, which became one month, which became two...and then we might get one...and then repeat...until...
We had to let this treatment go...the Oxy was hard for me to stay on...
Folfiri is better for the platelets...they don't fall nearly as far and while they still won't recover real well...they don't go down enough to prevent or delay treatment...the WBC's are more of a concern here...Neulasta or Neupogen solves those.
So, maybe the onc will consider foregoing the Oxy now...and move you straight to Folfiri, so you can knock down some of those cells.
Hi Craig. I'm on Avastin and Folfiri. Never had platlets issue when on Oxy. My husband read about Mellifolium 30. We are going to go look for it. How have you been? I know it's been rough on you lately coming on the boards but we need you and your great advice.
I've never heard of mellifolium and so I googled it....popped up in the prostate cancer forum someone talking about it....weird, I've been on blood thinners, and chemo. combination and my platelets are fine so far for the past two years....now all this low platelet talk has me concerned seems to be a frequent issue. Maybe Avastin related??
So sorry about your platelet level. You said you haven't had chemo in a month, is your platelet level going up in the past month? What do the docs say? Sounds like a common problem, hopefully get that chemo back on track next week. Big big HUGS
Sandy
I've had trouble with platelets too, on my current regime (GOLF-A). We think its the Gemzar. I've had to move permanently from a 2 week cycle to a 3 week cycle. Seems to be working now. Unfortunately not much one can do for platelets (unlike WBC). This is only anecdotal but my oncologist suggested I try eating beef and button mushrooms (together) every day. I've been doing that. Who knows -- but can't hurt, right (unless you are vegetarian, etc.).
I wish you all the best.
I had to have two transfusions but haven't had to recently.
Those platelets have caused me to skip treatments but not as long as you have gone. Unfortunately not much to do but wait for body to do its thing to rebuild. Did you say your plates are 60000? My doc wont give if less than 100000....what is your docs cutoff. Pray they rebuild soon. Jeff
seems a lot of us are having platelet problems.i have been off chemo for 2 months .went to onc yesterday and after all i have been thru lately my platelets are finally 67,000 after being 32,000 a week ago.it has just taken time and some trial and error medicines to finally get the go ahead to be back on xeloda again.try not to worry sometimes it just takes time for the body to recoup.just keep your mind in fight mode and you will be fine....Godbless...johnnybegood
I was giving NuelastaI for 3 consecutive days when white cells count went down. After that I was going the day after the 5FU was disconnected for just 1 shot. Make sure you take Aleve and Claritin 1each, that morning before NuelastaI. This will help you not to have any bone pain.

last year i did folfox6 & when i went for chemo #11 out of 12, my platelets were 53,000 & i could not get chemo. talk about being mad! the next week they were up to 60,000 so i got my last tx. this year i am on folfiri plus avastin & right now i am doing #5 out of 12 & my platelets have been perfect. it is amazing how each of us responds to the tx. hang in there & i will pray hard for those platelets to start producing!

One of my doctor friends who is also a survivor told me to eat mashed potato if platelets go down as thats what saved his life during bone marrow transplant for leukemia. I did. And altho my platelets were borderline and my onc feared stopping of treatment, I didnt have to as the potatos spiked it up - why dont u try eating mashed or baked potato and see if it helps your counts.
I am in... will have them tonight. What ever it takes so that I can chemo I will do. Its frustrating that there isn't anything they can give you to spike them up like when white blood cell count is low.
I start taking Chlorella and 4Life Transfer Factor along with multi vitamins, Vitamind C and D. All are suppose to help.
Thank you everyone for your feedback. I appreciate it!
My platelets always stay around 65/70, but went in the tank down to 39. A naturopath recommended a product called Real Build. It's like $80 a bottle, but it did help me. Pushed me up from 36 to 55 in 6 days.
That happened to me four times during my chemo so it added another month to my chemo time. The second time it happened, I broke down in tears. I was so disappointed and upset. Then, I heard it wasn't terribly rare to have treatments cancelled because of that. I felt better that it happened to a lot of people and they coped. Hope it doesn't happen again to you! Good luck.
