edited July 2012 in Breast Cancer #1
Synopsis: DCIS Jan 2009, lumpectomy and rads. Reoccurance April 2012, bilateral mastectomy July 9th 2012. The surgery went fine, no reconstruction, no new cancer found after specimens (my boobs) removed. They could not find the sentinel node so no lump nodes removed.
Drains removed at 7 days and the radiated side was pretty painful - placed on oral antibiotics. Visit at 10 days resulting in readmission for IV antibiotics-this was Thursday.

It hasn't been awful but it hasn't been fun. It took 4 sticks and an ultrasound machine for the IV but it has been good since. Yesterday they wanted a drain back in. Under ultrasound and with good drugs. There has been some nasty stuff coming out of there. I feel better and the site looks better but this could be 10 days of hospitalization. Some the patients are ...noisy and sleep has been a little iffy. Hubby is a wreck and not handling well. Oh, and his surgery is the 31st.

I'm ready to be well.

Maureen

I'm so sorry you're in the hospital, it is certainly not fun. As for the sleep issue, don't be afraid to ask for something to help with that if you need it while you're there.

I hope the infection clears and that you are soon back to the comfort of your own home.

    hugs,

    Ugh
How scarey and disappointing to have complications and end up back in the hospital. It's bad enough that you had the recurrence and had to have surgery. My goodness, just look what all this did to your hair!

Seriously, I hope you continue to heal and get home soon so you can shift gears and take care of your husband.

Keep us posted please. I'm sending hugs and prayers.

    better
I'm feeling better and things are looking better. There is one area that is still red and hard so they are going to ultrasound it today to see if there is a pocket of fluid. Discharge tomorrow maybe. If not I'm going to make a stick for a picc line because they needed a new IV last night and thank god for one stick Susie!! She was slick because another one had missed and I'm running out of possibilities. The Vancomycin is soooo hard on the veins.

    I think I'm getting a reputation here. ;-)

I am dizzy just reading this. I am so sorry you are having such a hard time with this. But I am happy to read that no cancer is found in the "specimens".

Sending gentle, ever so gentle hugs to you and hoping that hubby can find peace as he heads into hospital for his surgery.

The US did not show fluid, I still have the drain but that will probably come out wednesday or thursday. Hubby is being a butthead and I do not have a working bathroom.

If it ain't one thing, it's 3 others.

    thanks!
The drain came out today--now we hope it doesn't fill up and get nasty again. I'm on oral antibiotics and they appear to be working-everywhere! But diarrhea and a yeast infection are a small price to pay if it gets this taken care of. Hubby has his surgery next tuesday, I don't have time to mess with this any more.

Are you better in time for hubby?
    Maureen,

Did the antibiotics finally do the trick? After going through such a major surgery yourself, are you able now to help your husband through his ordeal on Tuesday? That would be just in time, don't you think? What surgery is he having, and will you need to be his nurse at home? I hope that you have someone to help you...as it is too soon for you to be over-doing it either. Wishing you are feeling better now!

    Yes
the antibiotics seem to have taken care of the infection. I still have some fluid in the right surgical site but it's just "ouchy" not terrible. I still have no stamina but otherwise pretty fine. Hubby should be OK-he is having laproscopic gastric bypass so getting up an moving is part of the post op regime. My kids are here in town so I can yell for help if I need it.

I'm ready to be well! ;-)
