Hi all- Well I had hip replacement surgery two days ago.Im writing from the hospital and am still a little loopy..so i apologize up front for any grammatical and or spelling mistakes.Surgery went well and i just started walking today...30 steps..not as good as you martha.LOL but maybe on my way.the doctor said my hip had collapsed and was fractured..What a mess..Now i am the bionic woman. They say here that i am a healthy woman except for my former hip..I have been told its very common for this to happen to anal c patients.Oh well..onward and forward!!!Hugs to all my friends...alyse

I was just thinking about you. I know how radiation for Anal Cancer can destroy our bones and now that I am recovering from Breast Cancer also I am on meds that weaken my bones even more so have added the worry of a break or fracture to my list. I am amazed at you walking so soon, that is great. I pray we all have the strength of Martha throughout our lives!!!! I just read an article on the "goodness of prunes" and their ability to not only prevent but reverse bone loss. We all know they help in other ways if needed so worth eating a couple everyday I think! Take care, feel well soon!

I am VERY impressed that you have taken 30 steps just two days after surgery! You will be dancing soon and running faster than me with that new hip! I hope you are being kept comfortable with meds and getting lots of TLC. It sounds like your hip was in bad shape--no wonder you were in such pain! I'm glad you are "fixed" now and yes, you ARE the Bionic Woman! Here's wishing you a swift and complete recovery! Hugs!

I'm so glad you are doing well! I'm really impressed that you are getting around with only the use of a cane, as I have a friend who recently had hip replacement and she had to use a walker for awhile. You are doing great! I won't rat you out for taking that shower! lol! I hope you see improvement with each and every day. Please keep us posted and take care! Dancing is just around the corner! :)

It's hard to believe you have had the surgery and are on the mend. I haven't logged on for a while. Congratulations. You are a real inspiration. Having read the comments and your post I guess I'll start eating my prunes. I like them anyway. The Oncologist at MSK warned me about medications that affect our bones - including NEXIUM. Now told to use Prilosec but I am drinking Apple Cider Vinigar (about a tea spoon) at night now which seems to be working for the time.

All the best,
Sandy

hi sephie- i have had tightness and some pain in my groin since finishing treatment four years ago..It got worse through time.Once i got up and started walking..it would be "ok".Finally this past march....when I would walk..I would get severe pain in my groin.I thought i pulled a groin muscle. When lying down i could not lift my leg, and would get pain in groin area.Getting in an out of the car was also a problem..The pain in my groin was impeding my life.Someone mentioned to me that groin pain is a sign of a bad hip..It never occurred to me .As the pain got worse,it also started hurting me in the back of my leg down to my knee.I went to hip specialist. He took an mri and it showed my hip was collapsing and i also had a slight fracture. Its very common with anal cancer treatment from radiation. So here i am 11 days since surgery ..and doing well.STaples came out today.I can walk without cane around the house.I'm doing well.If you are having these symptoms .i would suggest you investigate it.My surgeon said it was only going to get worse if i didnt take care of it.Good luck to you sehie...hugs .alyse

So sorry to hear about the constipation. It sounds like you've tried lots of different things, so I won't suggest any of the usual. Eating fruits that start with the letter "P" is a good rule of thumb. Peaches, pears and papaya (which is highly recommended) may help. You could also try papaya enzyme supplements. Are you taking a fiber supplement and stool softener? All things to try unless you've already tried them. I hope once the pain medication is completely out of your system, you'll get some relief! Hugs!

Glad your hip is doing well, but sorry that you've encountered another problem. I still use a sitz bath. Maybe the warm water relaxes something... Hope you feel better soon!

I am glad to hear things are going well with your hip, but sorry to hear that the pain meds are causing you such a problem. May it pass quickly so that you can enjoy the use of that new hip with the summer before us! Take care of yourself and get the rest you need.

Hi Alyse, I am 2 and a half years out of treatment and still trying to manage the pain from the radiation. This is my first time posting. I lost a lot of faith with doctors after this ordeal, from misdiagnosis to may radiation oncologist saying he didn't understand why I was still in pain. This was the same doctor that when I told him I was having really bad hot flashes after treatment, he said I though you had a hysterectomy. I said I did but my ovaries are still intact! Then he said oh I would have shielded your ovaries then!Your story really intrigued me because the last month I have had excruciating pain in the groin and hip. After seeing your story, I think I have to bite the bullet and go back ton the doctor. I hope you are doing well. I still have weekly bouts of filling the toilet with blood, sex has been out of the question, I leave a trail of blood to the bathroom after so we have stopped trying and the fact that I need a bathroom within minutes has forced me to go on disability. Good luck all, this forum is a true help.

Welcome to the board. I'm a little over 3 1/2 years out and had problems up till about a year ago. Still have occasional issues in the bathroom but for the most part things are pretty good. I hope your symptoms get better over time.

I want to thank you for unknowingly inspiring me to get a baseline bone density screening last week. My report was in the normal range without meds, but my insurance company was reluctant to cover the scan until my doctor shared some of the stats that you brought forth in addition to specifics she found herself.

Happy anniversary! And here's to your recovery from surgery!!

Thanks for your informative posts. I had groin pain today and spasms down the back of the right leg then burning from the inside out like fire. I can track it right to my anus. Something happened to inflame it or maybe it's just radiation sickness. It was bad enough that I took a pain pill which I hate doing because of the side affect you described here . . . ouch, ouch ouch! One thing just leads to the other. I really want to have a bone density but my doctor has ignored me twice. There must be a lot of pressure on these doctors what to prescribe and what not to prescribe. My insurance company has gotten the short end of the stick with me lately. So much medical stuff and I have been seeing a psychologist too for the related stress of all this stuff.

I don't know what I would do without this board keeping me informed. I will stay on the bone density thing.

So happy your marriage held up under all this icky cancer business. Mine seems to be improving even. Good things can come out of lousy things.
All the best,
Sandy

Hello, I just found this site today. I found youre post and was reading it. I have the same thing happening to me. I had radiation treatments for anal cancer. My hip is giving me problems. My doc says its brusitis and did two treatments which did nothing. I cant lay on my right side at all. He said for me to go to an ortho doctor. I never would have thought about the radiation messing up my hip. Im sure thats what it is. They never listen to me. About like they did when I had anal cancer it took 10 times to the doctor before they would even acknowledge it. I am glad that I found other people out there like me going through the same things I am. I will be praying for you and a speedy healing!

Hi-Im glad you found this.I also never suspected radiation could do this.My radiologist never told me about possible side effects from radiation, and there are plenty. My hip replacement was 4 weeks ago and I am doing better every day.I no longer use a cane and walk fine.Amazingly i don't even limp..no one would ever know.I am going to physical therapy to work on range of motion.I still can't reach down to put my shoes on...but it will come.My journey with this hip problem actually wasn't too bad.I had the best surgeon and i see good results.Thank you all for your positive messages.Hugs ...alyse
