I have been using the biotene gel toothpaste since my diagnosis last Aug, along with that I use a sonicare elec toothbrush and a waterpic...sometimes I don't think the toothpaste is really cleaning my mouth, guess in my skewed brain if it ain't foamy in my mouth ,please JG no comments about a foamy mouth :p), it ain't working. What other brands of flouride toothpaste do you guys use?

    fluoride
your doing the same that i do except i floss. Bioteen is not a fluoride. i get mine from my dentist as a script. for the first 8 years post treatment i did not do what i do now, that led many many problems and my dentist gave up. then my new dentist put me on most of this care and since the problems have been repair or repairs and several teeth finally bit the dust. in fact we talked about this not too long ago that i have not really had any new decay in 5-6 years. i suggest you get on a fluoride script.

i clean teeth 3-4 times a day with waterpic, floss and brush. fluoride happen 2-3 times a day. oh, when it use the waterpic i use the hottest water i can, i thought since a dish washer uses hot water it has to help my cleaning also.

my bioteen has never been foamy, but it does run out both sides of my mouth since i am level headed.

    Prevident 5000
You should get rx strength toothpaste from dentist:

Prevident 5000 1.1% floride toothpaste by colgate.

You should also be chewing xylitol gum during the day as much as possible.

I get so tired of the board malfunctioning
Tried to answer this earlier, and after careful composition, the board at my homework. Anyway, I've used prevident, or the generic equivalent for almost 14 years. I also use gelcam in trays. The problem is, despite the most assiduous attention to detail, problems still come up. This is because we all can only do the best we can do, and the rest, as they say, is up to mother nature.

I have been as careful as anyone about my dental situation, but as time advances, so do my problems. I've not had any cavities since my original rads, but I have slowly advancing gum disease, and lots of bone reabsorption. I've lost one tooth due to gum recession, and had HBO prior to an uneventful extraction about 3 years ago. Nothing I can do about this, but keep doing the best I'm able. A lot of my problems have come up during epiisodes of treatment. My first gingival pockets appeared during my first rads, for instance. They stitched my lip to my gums when I had my radical surgery in 2010, and it was well over a month before I could brush again. My gumline receeded during that time.

During rads this winter, my mouth got so sore I had trouble brushing, and absolutely could not use my trays. So I carefully brushed on fluoride several times a day. I haven't had my first dental appointment post rads, it's due in a few weeks. But I'm betting I've got less gumline now than I had 4 months ago. I had a dental visit with a univeristy based "expert" right before rads this time. He wanted to extract 5 teeth due to recession of gumline and bone reabsorption, but due to the fact my HBO was over 2 years ago, they refrained. I really don't have dental symptoms, so I guess life goes on, and we'll just have to see how I look a year or ten down the road.

I don't want to overmessage this topic, and I don't want you to think I'm not an advocate of dental hygiene. This is what I'm like 14 years after first rads, and I don't think for a minute I'm going to go another 20 years without some very real problems.

I'll ask the dentist about that and I do chew a gum called Spry with the xylitol in it.

    Flossing and flouride trays
I use both of thesae as well..except I do the trays only twice a week. With the water pic I use really hot water as well..the only thing I did learn was not to put it all the way to level 10 it was like sand blasting my gums. As for the biotene..the heads to the electric tooth brush are so small maybe I'm just not getting enough of the biotene on the brush.

I have to schedule my next appointment with mine..so will discuss my concerns with him ...if it's not one thing with this disease/treatment/recovery it's another.

    Biotene toothpaste
    Linda,

You are probably using the right amount of Biotene toothpaste on your electric brush. We only really need a small amount of toothpaste to do the job, about the size of a pea on the brush, anything over that is a waste. You are correct, the Biotene is not foamy, but it does work. I use it often.

Now the Flouride...You really need to use the Flouride Trays at least ONCE A DAY. Some Doctors want us to use them twice a day. I was doing that at first, but found I was skipping and made a commitment to myself to use the Flouride at least once a day. I used the trays for roughly 5 years and after that time, I switched Dentist. The new Dentist gave me the Flouride Gel to use by brushing it on via electric brush that I use. I do the same as the trays, brush the Gel on and let it set on my teeth for 30 or more minutes before rinsing.

    Say It Ain't So....
    LOL, what......

I gave up on Biotene a long time ago...it wasn't doing it for me either.

I'm just back on Crest or Colgate...(whatever Shelley buys).. I prefer Crest, but she's the grocery shopper and she likes Colgate, LOL.

I do floss frequently and also use the blue Listerine.

    I also use Oral-B STOP, which I ger from my Dentist;

    Oral-B STOP

So far so good...another check-up and cleaning yesterday, no cavities.

I do plan on getting a waterpic though.

    Dental Care
Like Charles, I use Prevident 5000 (dry mouth type) that I get from my dentist. I see her 4 times a year for cleaning and checkup. As part of my morning routine, I use the mouth-piece trays filled with Colgate Gel-Cam, which is an over the counter floride gel. These stay in my mouth for around 20 minutes as I get dressed.....get the paper at end of driveway....check on the boat...and feed the pets. I then try not to drink any iced coffee or eat for another 20 minutes. I then Water Pic, using a cap-full of Act Floride Total Care along with warm water in the little tank. You want foamy ??, then this is it. :) At night, I use the Water Pic again with just tepid water...brush with Prevident 5000, and use regular flossing. When purchasing a Water Pic system, be sure and get all the various implements that go with it. The brush with high powered water going through the bristles feels great on the gums.........well, at least I think it does. Soon to be 3 yrs. from the end of treatment, and I've had no dental problems as of yet. Pessimistic me is waiting for all of em to fall out within a 5 hour period.

i do not use trays for fluoride, i use my sonicare tooth brush and let set for 30 min. the focus while doing this is on the gum line, the worse of places.
