Study

The hospital just called and asked if I want to participate in a study. They did not go into detail. They just said that they would talk to me at my blood typing on Thursday.
The guy did say that my doctor said I was eligible. I don't know what it involves but I guess I will find out Thurs. I tried to find out what it was and all he said is it is listed on the computer under EPC.

They must want people that have been diagnosed with RCC but not had surgery yet because he said they would need 3 extra tubes of blood at this typing. They would use the left overs from the tumor and urine that would otherwise go down the drain.

And is a study a trial?

What do you all think it is and should I do it?

I'm guessing that they are interested in the contribution of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to tumour angiogenesis and looking for markers to track EPCs from the originating bone marrow to tumour neovasculature (with a view to better understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying EPC biology).

However, that's just a wild-ass guess.

It may be a study not involving a trial - again just my guess. Why don't you find out more and then bounce it off us here when you know more about what it is. It might be something useful for which your formal permission is required but which would be no hassle for you. If so, it could be worth doing. Find out more and let us all know.

I don't know much about RCC and I am going to have to translate your first paragraph. (LOL)

Yes, I am going to let him tell me about it so I will let you all know what he says. Thought it was interesting though.

I found out a little more about the study today. The person said that they would require nothing extra from me and just use the leftovers. I already found that not to be true.
It is for a data base to be used by Mayo and other research centers. I would find out anything that Mayo was doing wiht my blood, urine, tissue but not from anyone else.
Personally I found the man to be less that forth coming so I declined. I did have my blood work done and asked the person doing it if many people participate and she said most do.

I am pleased with my decision as I found out from the first thing they wanted they were not honest. Sorry if this offends anyone. But if it is my blood, tissue, etc I feel I have a right to know if it is used in any study anywhere. Also, what was involved in the selection process, in which he was very vague.

Didn't explain that very well; but, I am a little nervous.

It's much as I guessed and a pity you didn't participate but I can understand why - he shot himself in the foot by not being prepared to give you a proper explanation. So, if that's the quality of communication, maybe it won't be a well-run study in any case!
