Many here have been in your shoes and are here to help.
I am assuming you will be doing Folfox or some combination of chemo. Chemo is doable. Relaxation helps, positive attitude, and using your mind to relax and let those chemicals fight for you. I imagined and visualized the chemo eating those cancer cells like PACMAN. Stay hydrated and use lotion on hands and feet before they start to "crack". Glad you have a supportive friend. The chemo nurses too are wonderful. They are so positive and helpful. I took each chemo treatment one chemo at a time.

    Hello
    Hi John,
I remember when my husband was first diagnosed... it all felt like a really bad dream that I couldn't wake up from. The good news is you found this board and there are lots of really generous folks that understand what you are going through and can be a real source of inspiration. My advice to you is to take it a day at a time, otherwise you could make yourself nuts. You are going to have a lot of questions so fire away! Someone will respond with an answer or suggestion. Good luck to you and GOD's blessings.

You sound like a strong person
    Hi,

You sound like a strong person... just to ask for help takes alot of guts. I believe in prayer and will start praying for you today:)
You will get through chemo...just try and relax. I was not so smart one day and decided I should eat mexican spicy food during my chemo infusion...never did that again!!! Ha Ha. I found it better to stay away from heavy fat foods or spicy foods going forward. Everyone is different and you will find what works for you during the process. I especially enjoyed mashed potatoes and bananas for some reason...???

Well, you hang in there and know many survivors are walking right beside you in spirit. Stay strong, try to eat well, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

God's blessing and healing powers to you~

    Hello John:
and welcome. My hubby was diagnosed 3/09 with advanced Stage IV with multiple liver and lung metastasis. You are so very young for this disease, I'm sorry.

Do you know which chemo you will be receiving? If you do, let us know and the members will give you a heads up on what to expect as far as side effects so you will know what is somewhat normal. Knowing what to expect takes away a lot of anxiety and worry. You can start a new discussion on that one if you so desire and members will tell you their experiences.

My hubby worked through all his chemo treatments but for the infusion day(s). Many, if not most, of our members do work through their treatments. I thought I would mention that in case you are worrying about "how will I pay my rent, car payments, etc".

I would also encourage you to read and/or join the: Colon Club, Colon Cancer Alliance and Fight Colorectal Cancer sites. They, like this one, are enormously informative.

I wish you the best outcome as you start your journey. I'm sorry you have to be here.

    Take care - Tina

    Hi again John,
    Please,

    Hi again John,
Please, please put that three year idea right out of your head. The fact is that people are finding cures/NED for stage IV colon cancer more these days than ever. Don't get me wrong... this is a beast of a disease but it can be beat. Stay positive, enjoy life everyday and go back to visit that doc on your ten year anniversary to let him look the guy in the eye that he told wouldn't be around. There will be ups and downs, the important thing is that when you are having a down time you identify it as that and look forward to the up! You can do it! I am gonna be praying for you! GOD bless you!

Oh, by the way I am also a sepsis survivor! I had multiple organ failure, 24 hour dyalisis and was in a medically induced coma for over a month. You have already survived something that very few of us do. ;)

    Hello John
Glad you located this site. It's been a wonderful help to me these past two years. So your doc gives you 3 years??? Mine gave me six months tops, maximum. Well it's been two years now, and I'm here, alive, kicking, and laughing and loving life. A lot of us here were given the same prognosis, and yet here we are, very much alive and apparently going to be that way for many years to come.
I expected to have all these terrible things happen to me because of chemo. So here I am, two years later, on Avastin (biological warfare against cancer tumor wantabe's) and am suffering my first lasting side effect, a canker sore in my mouth, besides thinning hair (apparently I'm the only one that notices it, as it's still long and blonde and fully covers my head).
If you have questions about side effects that tend to hang around the first couple of days, let us know we can sure fill you in on them, such as the OUCH jaw effect the first few bites of food, etc.
The thing is, is to know you have all these people around the WORLD rooting for you every step of the way, and in my case that sure makes a difference.
We're from all makes, models and ages, short termers and long termers, we've been there done that, and are always watching out for each other.
The cancer world in the form of tumors and what it does to us SUCKS, but the cancer world in the form of friends and help is a BEAUTIFUL thing.
I wish for you a long life filled with beauty, good friends and laughter.

I try to offer those new to
I try to offer those new to the Board some quotes that I learned from the Board that have helped me.

    "This is a marathon,not a sprint".
This has helped me realize to buckle down for the long haul.  You can't cry everyday and put your family's life on hold.  You have to keep living your life as close to normal as possible.

"Feed the faith.  Starve the fear".

I think the worst symptom associated with these disease may be what it does to your thoughts.  They can be controlled with some effort.  I try to shove the bad ones down as far as I can.

The last one I read in an Abe Lincoln book and I don't have the exact words but it was his response to those who warned him about being more cautious with his personal security.  He said if I worry every day about dying, I die a thousand deaths.  If I don't worry about it, I die only one.

Stay on the Boards.  The people here are very knowledgeable. The information will help you and the encouragement will "feed the faith".

    No dream interpreter but...
John, I'm the mother of the patient, not the patient myself, but I can tell you that I firmly believe your dream was because of your anxiety about the disease and starting treatment. We all have bad dreams like this and I think our deepest fears come out in our dreams. So try to relax and breathe... I know it's scary. I bought my daughter some "guided imagery" things to listen to on her iPod for cancer, chemo, radiation and stress. She says they are very good and help her to relax and visualize the treatments working. I got them online at www.healthjourneys.com - I got the downloadable MP3's and saved them on my computer. My son in law put them on my daughter's iPod. Something like that might help you to relax. Good luck with your treatment tomorrow - it will be ok. You are going to be actually doing something to stop this curse. I've heard that's a good feeling.

    BE Strong
    Hi JOhn,

I am new in this site as well. I can imagine what you are going through I was diagonose in my 35 birthday .. I was so scared confused and angry at the same time it was just a mixed feeling. Your treatment sound very family what I have gone through my cancer metasis several times also spent my new years in the surgery room. My advice to you john be very positive always see the best of what your are going through and always remember it can always be worst. with all this I learned to understand God have a purpose for everything its just finding that purpose. I wish you all the best. I will have you in my prayers. Dont be afraid to cry and to just let your emotions out.

    Blessings

    You are a Survivor
    John,
When you first are diagnosed, one's mind runs on high speed, fear is not our friend. I was told that once one survives surgery you are a survivor by a lady who was in the University of Minnesota 5FU trials 20 years ago and survived a recurrence. Once you start your treatment and focus on one treatment at a time, know there is a percentage who survive and you will meet many of them here on this site. Posting and sharing will help you feel hope and give you courage for the fight.

My sister, a doctor told me as I started Folfox, "do not focus on the percentages, instead know that one can survive and with Prayers, hope and treatment that could be me" I used visualization and relaxation and soon I was able to "slow my mind down" and sleep better. Think of this as a journey one step at a time.

If you are a prayerful person, prayer helps one fight the fear. I found relaxation methods helpful during chemo and to help me sleep. Do not be afraid to ask for medication for sleeping or for anxiety if needed.

There are many wonderful people here who are very knowledgeable and can be here for you one step at a time. Prayers,
    NB
