    hi pepe
I do not know if it can elevate liver enzymes. I take .5 when I go to bed and if i wake up in the night I take another .5. i have been on it for about 3 years.....My doc thinks the danger is that you always want to increase the dose.

I also take an antidepressant called effexor.....37 mg. My doc does not seem worried about this drug.....

    Dear Pepe
from what I read Ativan can cause depression, mood changes, aggressive behavior even though it is prescribed for anxiety, which seems strange to me.

Perhaps your doc could change your meds to something else if it is not working.

Gonna see psychiatrist next week , but most of this
kind of meds are not compatible with liver ! Ativan is one of the very little few!.

    I use Ativan like Mags...
the .5 mg at bed and during the night as well. I also use it for nausea at a higher dose, 2 mg. 3x per day. From what I've read, it's considered safer for the liver than other drugs in its class, although it does still have to be monitored if you have liver issues. Maybe your doctor could suggest something that could be added to the Ativan to increase its efficacy? My daughter has to take similar medications and she is on three different things to address her issues. Sometimes just like with chemo a "cocktail" can work better than just one thing. Take care, and I hope things improve soon-Ann

Pepe, you're correct about most meds of this nature causing
potential problems with liver.....I use 1 mg of ativan every now and then to help with sleep but for past few months, nothing seems to work as i rarely sleep longer than 2 hours without getting up to piss or check my bag......There had been a time i needed xanax and zoloft but weaned myself off them after i retired.....Gf's been on psych meds over 40 years but in her case, its a necessity......Speak to your therapist/doc for further advice, keeping in mind it may take a few weeks for something else to kick in.....

    How about herbs?
Here is a site that talks about herbs that may/can relief anxiety.

    http://www.iampanicked.com/anxiety-articles/herbs-for-anxiety.htm

Perhaps you could take the list with you to doc and see if any would help and yet not cause liver issues.

    Hugs to you!

You may be helped with a
You may be helped with a low-dose antidepressant....it helps with anxiety too. That along with the Ativan will help you through these times.
(I take .05 Ativan every night, but if I toy with it, say take 1 or even 2 mg and then go back to .05 it has a backlash effect.)

    Ativan
I've got a prescription for it with the 1 mg too but I'll only take it when I'm really tense so I'm really not on it a whole lot. If it's not working for you with that mg you might need to try Xanax. Xanax didn't work for me but that is another alternative anxiety pill. Talk to your doctor because there are many more out there than Ativan. You need to get one that works for you. Can your doctor and see if they can try you on something else. Pain pills can elevate your enzymes and I'm thinking this could if you take too much, but I'm not sure. Hope you feel better soon.

    dear pepe,

i did a quick search ativan and contraindication.
a friend along time ago told me about that word contrindication and google. it was you. it works. thanks so here is the payback. your xmass present early.

a little life extension is what i needed, so one day a little lef bird ( the life extension oncologist called me direct on my mobile while i was at the gym ) he told me about 20mg of
melatonin as a suggested dosage. lots of studies, 3 good articles on lef website. my integrative doctor had no issues boosting my 5mg melatonin to 20 mg. i think its a natural substance. i sleep like a baby now, deep restful sleeps. i wake up rested and healed, thankyou god. waking up well, its a process we don't do after we die. to wake up fresh and healthy is a joy, if a little tumour is trying to grow in me, alot is killed after each nights sleep. a local researcher here proved the 3mg a day reduces recurrance in breast cancer women by 50% i have tried looking the researcher up, but have not made contact yet. one day but no pressure. sleep is fundamental to healing, especially while on chemo, my onc never made this a priority.

i had ativan while on folfox, i remember my onc cut down the steroid DEX as i was hyper and angry and abusive. the combo of crc, chemo, dex steroid would often send me over the top. i remember my onc cut my dex to half, trying to get me normal. i never even looked at the side effects of ativan. the little pill to keep me happy and not angry as my onc said. the altered sexual side effect from ativan i something i just learned. i always thought a couple of times a day was normal anyway. what is normal now we got/had crc, got chemo, pills and supplements. not that it matters we just try to make each day count, you have pepe. you supported me crazy walking post, maybe we need a sleeping post as well. we can recount our weird dreams each day. now that could be seriously healing based on my latest farout reading. i digress constantly, sorry!

these are just little pills they hopefully help, but be aware they play with our brain chemicals and receptors. the chemical balance in our brain is a miracle of life itself, we should treat it with care.

maybe some of us, me for example have run so hard to the natural healing side of foods and lifestyle to intuitively get away from the real and harmful side effects of the chemo and chemo associated drugs like ativan. to avoid the chemical cocktail of drugs. its all apart of the balance and timing and thats between each person and doctor and is unique. i had the ned window and that what i did. maybe that why i am scared of my crc trying to come back.

if a dream of climbing mount everest, can send a mans body to the everest summit, surely a dream of life, love and health can send a t cell to kill our cancer.

for this board and all other csn boards for cancer patients. we must in my opinion cut each other with more slack, we have to give each other more love, kindness and respect. if a few people are harsh, unkind, critical and only at times. i think i at least have a theory. it because we have crc, crc screws our bodies, our minds , our souls, our friends. gee maybe once i kicked my dog and slapped the wife.

some old timers will remember my crazy posts while on folfox. now i know most of my posts are different to put it kindly, but thats me, we are all different. especially our crc's that makes finding the magic bullet cure difficult.

if it looks like poo, if it smells like poo then it probably is poo.
if i was stage 4 ( i will never talk about stage 1, 2, 3 or 4 again ), if i had rising liver enzymes. remember the liver damage post i put up
that caused a huge fight with regard folfiri.
well from my understanding thats shows leaking cells from the liver in the blood supply.

What are the possible side effects of lorazepam (Ativan)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

    confusion, depressed mood, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself;
    hyperactivity, agitation, hostility;
    hallucinations; or
    feeling light-headed, fainting.
Less serious side effects may include:

    drowsiness, dizziness,...

What are the precautions when taking lorazepam (Ativan)?

Before taking lorazepam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other benzodiazepines (such as alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, glaucoma, lung/breathing problems (such as sleep apnea), mental/mood disorders (such as depression, psychosis), drug/alcohol abuse.

    SIDE EFFECTS:
Drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, headache, nausea, blurred vision, change in sexual interest/ability, constipation, heartburn, or change in appetite may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

i reread the last sentence above, so a few on ativan do have serious side effects, my onc did not even warn me.

dearest pepe, now i know why my onc had me see the shrink every fortnight for the 8 months i was on folfox.

a few thoughts and facts that may help. trying to help you has clarified for me how much our chemo drugs and the associated drugs alter our brain chemicals.

be well my friend, meditation is free. i am off to yoga and church. its sunday here.

    hugs,

Well this thread seems to be
Well this thread seems to be striking a chord for many of us. Maybe we do need a sleep thread. I have been taking half of a 5 mg valium to sleep. Sometimes I just take a fourth of it and leave the other 4th for middle of the night. Or I'll take a half when I have a procedure coming up. Anyway, I really want to sleep with no drugs so I bought Melatonin to try. Tried it years ago and it didn't work but well, I just don't want to wake up in the middle of the night.
Back to the question, I'd ask the doc for something else as well as work on deep breathing and relaxation CDs. Anxiety is no fun.

    So sorry
    Hi Pepe,
Im sorry the Ativan doesn't help you. I've been using it for nausea and it helps me a lot, or should I say it makes me pass out. Sometimes when I'm on steroids I also use it to calm me down, I have a very low tolerance to drugs so a little steroids give me anxiety and I need the Ativan or Xanax to settle me down. Hope you find something that works for you, I like to do tai chi too, that really helped calm me down because you really need to focus on the moves, I seem to fall back on that a lot too.
    Take care
