New here - my intro

Hello ladies and gents. I'm new here. I've been lurking for a few weeks and decided it was finally time to introduce myself and maybe get to know some of you nice people.

I'm a 52yo female. I've got IDC in a background of extensive intermediate grade DCIS. Lymph nodes and margins were clear. I try to read the report the doctor gave me but I can't seem to figure out my stage or grade. I'm sure at some point someone told me but you know how it is when you've got so much information coming at you at one time, some of it doesn't stick.

I had a routine mammogram on 8/5. It was a fluke that I got it on that day. I was scheduled for gastric bypass surgery on 8/8. I called about getting a mammogram thinking that I'd get it in a few weeks when I was recovering from the surgery. Well, they had an opening that day and I thought, why not. I'd go ahead and get it over with. Good thing I did. On Monday I had the gastric bypass surgery. Little did I know that while I was in the hospital the radiologist was trying to get in touch with me. They'd found a mass on the mammogram. They had been calling my work phone and obviously, I wasn't there to get the messages. Finally they called home. I went in on 8/16 to get an ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram. They were suspicious. I went back the next day for a biopsy. On Monday I went to get the results of the biopsy--inconclusive. Evidently that never happens. So, on 8/24 I had a core biopsy. Those results came back as IDC. From then on, things were a whirlwind. More tests. Surgery on 9/9--partial mastectomy (wedge resection) and they removed a couple of lymph nodes. Back home to recover. I was in and out of the hospital for a while there. Dehydration and I developed an ulcer.

I got an oncologist. The most wonderful woman I've ever met. I can't say enough good things about her. She told me about an oncotype test that would help me make a decision about chemo. I decided to go ahead with the test. I didn't want to do chemo but if the test showed I should, I'd do it. Well, the test came back with a 4. No chemo for me. I was so relieved.

So, I was to go home, heal, and then start radiation. I started whole breast radiation on 10/26. I've done thirteen so far. I've got seven more to go. The radiation is making me very nauseated. I've tried Phenergan, Zofran, Compazine, ginger tea, peppermint tea, ginger mints, and Ativan. So far staying on Zofran 24/7 and taking an Ativan at night seems to be the best combination. If you know of anything else I might try, please, let me know. I'll try anything.

I'll do 10 years of pills after radiation. They're running some tests to insure that I'm through menopause before deciding on which pills I'll take. I went through menopause early and they want to make sure that it isn't a false menopause because of my weight.

Well, you now know more about me than most people that I know. Hope I wasn't too long winded.

Hi Sylvan and Welcome! A fluke for sure, but, thank goodness you had the mammo done, although, I am very sorry about your results.

Good news about no chemo! I never got nauseated during rads, so, I am not for sure what might help you. I hope you find something.

Good luck to you and keep us updated on your progress.

    Welcome
Welcome my new pink sister. I'm glad you do not have to have chemo. I had radiation but the only side effect I had was fatigue and burn to the radiation site. I pray all goes well for you.

    Nausea
Do the think the nausea might also be related to the bypass surgery? I guess it really doesn't matter, nausea is nausea. Given the bypass, are you able to get enough fluids and calories? Thank goodness you didn't have to have chemo. I had no nausea with rads, but with chemo, the Zofran/Ativan combination you're using worked well for me. I guess that's not very helpful, is it? Have you tried doing a search for nausea? You may get some good advice there.

Welcome and best wishes to you as you complete your treatments.

Wow, I'm so glad that you had the mammo when you did! It's great that you have a wonderful Onc, it makes decisions easier, I think.

You're not long winded - the info helps us to know you better.

    Welcome
Welcome and I too wonder how the bypass might affect the water intake and nutrition aspects of treatment. One good thing. No chemo. And chemo is rough on the body and of course it lengthens the amount of time in treatment. So you get a bit of a shortcut. Good for you.

    water and nutrition
I'm really careful to get my fluids in every day. I was hospitalized once for dehydration shortly after the gastric bypass. I was drinking enough, it just wasn't staying down. The opening from my stomach had swollen almost shut. Some steriods and IVs fixed me right up. Since then, I'm very careful to get my fluids.

Nutrition probably isn't the best. I have to push the protein. 60-80 grams/day. That's a lot of protein. So I take several vitamins a day. Special bariatric sugery vitamins that are supposed to have everything I need.

    I'm in radiation now
    Hi Sylvan,
Glad you found this site. I am presently going thru radiation. I haven't gotten sick. I'm thinking, like the others, that it is related to your gastric bypass surgery. Just to be on the safe side, make sure to tell your radiologist and/or oncologist about your symptoms. God bless and be with you thru your journey.

    nausea
I talked with the doctor about the nausea. He said that the radiation scatters a little bit and that evidently the scatter is hitting my stomach. Nausea happens in about 10% of patients. I've also got an ulcer, which complicates things a bit. My daughter got me some sea-bands the other day. They seem to help a bit, just wish they carried the cool colors at the drug store. But I guess black goes with everything. :)

    Sylvan,
Just stopping by with my welcoming hug. It looks like the girls are taking great care of you here. I read your intro and I can't help but wonder if maybe the radiation shortly after gastric bypass surgery is the culprit for your nausea? Either way, I wish you relief soon my dear. Stay in touch and keep us posted on how you are doing, including your weightloss...

    weight loss
Oh, the weight loss. It's going okay. I figure all the extra stuff hasn't helped me much but I've lost 39 lbs in the 3 months since the surgery. A total of 50 since I started trying to lose (I had to lose some before they'd do surgery because my liver was too large).

    You have. Even busy
I had gastric bypass roux en y 4/1/2000 then dbl mastectomy 2/1/2011 for DCIS. I am doing great with both. I got immediate recon of both breasts, and I don't mean stretchers, I mean the final implants were put in when I had the mastectomy. They build a shelf instead of stretching your skin and eventually your tissue takes over the shelf area. the implants won't leak because they are the type, if cut, won't leak, kinda like silly putty but clear. I am happy. If you have bypass questions I would be happy to answer them.

    Hey Sylvan
I was dx 9/13. You've gotten a lot done in a short amount of time. I'm waiting on the resuts of that onco test. Have you asked your gastro about this? He may be able to help with something. I hope things get smoother for you.
