need advice on some symptoms.

in Colorectal Cancer #1
Tony just finished his second round of chemo. I'm wondering if these new symptoms are a result of chemo or not? abdominal and he had a fever last night. his feet hurt so bad he can't walk. chronic diarrhea and to me his eyes look yellow. good thing is we're going to see two specialists at ucla next week. thank you!!

    Hi Alex abdominal cramping, feet pain or diarrhea use to be
    normal while on chemo, but not yellow eyes at least in my case also be sure to monitoring his fever in case of more of 100 I would suggest to go to ER.

    Call a dr now!
    Fevers are not normal. Yellow eyes might indicate liver problems. Feet hurting - yes, that's normal. So is diarrhea. However, the fever and the yellow eyes are of concern. You need to call someone TODAY. It may be nothing, but it's better to be told that by a dr than one of us.

    Fever
    While George was on Folfox, he threw a fever (only happened once). When it got to 100-101, I call onc's office. Got a call back with 10-15 minutes from on call onc, since George did not have a cold, cold related cough, did not have the flu or flu like symptoms, he advised to take Extra Strength Tylenol. Doc called back about an hour later and fever went down to normal, George fell asleep and that was the end of it. Never knew what caused it and it only happened once. Don't take any chances, give the doc a call, that is what you pay them for!

    The yellow eyes would concern me so please don't hesitate to call and get the ball moving.

    My George had chronic diarrhea and ended up in the hospital. This happens often to people. Now we try to stay ahead of the diarrhea before it gets out of control like happened in the past.

    Like everyone will tell you, remember, the docs work for you so don't ever hesitate to call if you have an out of the ordinary concern(s).

    Side Effects of Chemo
    In Canada, we have what is called a fever card. I take my temperature every day. If it goes to 38 degrees C or more (I think that is around and over 100 degrees F), we are to go directly to emergency and present our card. I had to do that last September and was in hospital 5 days as I was dehydrated. Yellow eyes, ditto, kidney or liver problem perhaps. The diarrhea and neuropathy are normal. But watch the diarrhea as you can get dehydrated with this as well. I also ended up in the hospital with that as some chemos cause severe diarrhea (like irenotecan). Neuropathy is common with oxaliplatin. I take supplements to help with this and haven't had a problem since treatment 1 (I've just finished #12).

    I had to go buy a new
    I had to go buy a new thermometer this morning. His temp was normal. I told him I was going to call the doctor if he had a fever today. He was not liking that one bit. He is in bed under all of the covers with chills etc. i think he is definitely dehydrated. I don't want to say anything to him about his eyes... but may have too. I just need a closer look. Thank you!

    i agree with everyone else
    i agree with everyone else any fever that is 100.5 or over= trip to the ER. i ignored my first fever during chemo and i ended up in the hospital for 10 days while they treated me for pneumonia. i know it sucks and no one wants to sit in the ER for hours but it defiantly a must. i hope its nothing serious!

    Poor guy. He's really down and said, "I'm not ready to be sick (cancer sick, not chemo sick.) and I'm really afraid of the hospitals" So I think he may think it is a liver thing and not from chemo.

    Is very likely, and is also why he should go to the ER!

    This could be serious Alex, don't let him blow it off.

    Alex, I hope you were able to get Tony to the hospital. My husband is the same way and absolutely hates going to hospitals. I know how hard it is to get someone to go to the hospital when they feel sick and don't want to go. I hope you are there now getting some answers. Sending prayers up to you both. Hugs, Teri

    Fever and shaking chills a concern. Does he have a port? With chemo, immune compromised. Many serious possibilities IMHO to ignore. Other than the indignity of ER treatment, why should he not go?

    Thank you all for your support and advice, it definitely helped me make the decision to call his onc. yesterday. (although we were scheduled to fly out last night to ucla to see two specialists.) Oh well, that will happen later. he was immediately admitted to hospital here in town. His fever is still up and persistant diarrhea. Doc came in this morning and said it may be C. Difficile infection, more than likely due to chemo of course. Good news is that the chemo has shrunk the four tumors in the liver based on last fridays pet scan.

    I've been thinking about you and Tony and glad to hear the good news about the scan. Sorry to hear about the infection but hopefully they can take care of him at your hospital. Hope he recovers soon so you can make your appointment at UCLA. Hugs, Teri

    I have a cousin with satge for colon cnacer . Diagnosed over 18 months ago and had same issue once chemo started. They needed to shrink the liver tumors before they could operate. Similar effects and the Oncologist said the side effects were tough but short term and usually associated when the chemo is working . Sounds like you are experiencing same thing. Good news was in 4 months tumors were almost gone and they completed a successful surgery. Best of luck and hope things get better soon. Sorry to be on this page as I am a PC person and was looking here for some information on my cousin. Thank you and keep up the good fight.
