Hi everyone. I posted a while back when my mom was diagnosed with anal cancer and she was going through so much pain with her radiation.. We finally made it through that and then more bad news came our way. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what chemo they received for anal cancer. My mother was diagnosed in June with anal cancer and was treated with 5Fu and mitomycin. She had 2 rounds of each and she also had 7 weeks of radiation. Well she just had a PET scan in early September and to our surprise, she had "liver spots." A biopsy last week confirmed she had mets to liver. A true shock and disappointment to both her and I. The doc tells us that obviously she has had liver involvement for a while and since she never had PET scan til now, we didn't know. So here I sit now, saying all that chemo and radiation to her anal area, all that misery she went through and here we were expecting good news and then find out about the liver. So of course I am sad and want to know what more we can do. The doctor told us that he can try one more drug called cisplatin. He told us that even if he knew about the liver in June when she was diagnosed with the anal cancer, he would have treated the same anyway....with 5FU and mitomycin. He then said that her type of cancer seems to be aggressive and that cisplatin is the only other drug he can try. He said it works really fast and that after 4 days of it, he will repeat PET scan in 2 weeks and see if liver tumors have shrunk. If so, great! Then she gets another round of cisplatin and we take it from there. If not, then he said, that there's not much more we can do. So here I sit scared to death about my mom anticipating what we will get told in 2 weeks. Will the cisplatin work? And if not, is there really nothing else he can try? Anyone out there that has anal with liver mets, please let me know what else maybe is available. He did mention some kind of liver procedure where he can blast the tumors, forgot the name. But as far as chemo, he said that's it.
