Can Avastin cause issues with the port-a-cath incision site?

Hello everyone - I find myself on here posting questions about yet another unexpected episdoe ... starting on Tuesday, my mom has been experiencing redness and sensitivity around her port incision site. Incidentally, she had her first Avastin treatment last week at which time we were warned of some of the wound healing issues that may arise.

My question is this - her incision site was clean and perfect before her last cycle, and actually, even for a few days following the completion of her cycle. She went in for her routine blood work at which point the nurse noticed a little bit of redness and advised her to use antibiotic oinment which has been using. Since yesterday, the site has gotten progressively more red and although it's not warm to the touch or terribly tender, it looks a little off.

She has an appointment to see her doc tomorrow afternoon ... but until then, I wondered if any of you have experienced a similar episode?

What happens if God forbid the site is infected?

Thanks for your help.

- J

    Hi J
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. My wife had a port put in and was started on folfox-6 w/avastin. At first, everything seemed to be healing fine but as time went on it got worse. Her skin was deteriorating around the port. After 5 or 6 months, her onc ordered the port be removed and the rest of her treatments were via IV in alternating sites. I hope things work out for your mom.
