Severe bleeding from the tongue.

Yesterday I started to cough and then sprayed some blood out my mouth, then I got up and went to the bathroom and the blood flow increased. Bright red blood and it flowed like a river out of my mouth, had my wife take me to the ER and the bleeding stopped about the time we got to the hospital, so about 25 minutes in all, they did not have the equipment to treat me so they flew me to Renown in Reno. From the time I got to the hospital in Gardnerville until earlier today no more bleeding. I was seen and cared for by a ENT surgeon at Renown, she gave me one scenario that I liked is that the new tissue is pushing the old tissue out or it could be something else that I don’t like. Anyway today I started to cough again and the bleeding started again, but this time for only 5 minutes, the bleeding is coming from the top left side of my tongue. Thoughts.

    Hi brad
A few years ago I was on my way to lunch when I started to spit blood out by the mouth full. I called my ENT and Oncl Dr and rush into there office only to not find anything wrong. They scoped me drilled me and looked everywhere but could not find the bleeder. The only thing the ENT could say is that the blood vessels in my nasal are so damaged from all the radiation that at anytime they can pop bleed and re-heal all by there self. Now when I bleed it don’t worry me too much I look at it as my new normal bleeding syndrome.

    All the best my friend

    Thanks for the quick repley
Hondo, the blood was definatly coming out of the top of my tonque. There used to be a large lump on the bottom of my tongue just below where the bleeding is. After the breakeytherapy radiation I had this year the lump is gone. So it has me puzzled, the good news is the ENT doctor that came and seen me this morning I really liked, the one I been seeing at the VA here in Reno doesnt seem to give a crap about me so I am going to see her again and get some thouts from her. The doc at the VA has seen me three times and never scoped me to look at my progress. The best thing he has done for me is to remove a peice of wax from my ear. Anyway thank you.

    I like reason "A"
that it is caused by healthy tissue coming in. Doug's doctor described something similar about a lingering sore in his mouth (once an ulcer, now just a pit). He said that these things need to heal from below, so the ulcer is filling in nicely but can still be open and sore on the top.

What fun - sounds even better than spontaneous nose bleeds! I hope it clears up soon.

Seams unreal that he did not scope you, how could he tell anything, like you said some doctors just don’t care. I love my new ENT, and yes she is a she and really cares about my problems and takes the time to sit down and listen to me rather then talking over me telling me my problems with out looking first. She is also 38 and very nice to look at from an old man point of view. My first ENT for 3 ½ years wanted me to get back on chemo for cancer but he could never convince me that I had cancer again. The last time I saw him I said please stop crying woof after 3 ½ years it is getting old doc, he looked at his records and said I can’t believe it’s been that long. Ops back to the board for you old boy.

    Never see him again.
