I have a date for hernia surgery

August 9th. Unfortunately, I won't know until I wake up if he could do the repair via a laparoscopy route or not. If I luck out and get the lap procedure, I will be home the next day. An open abdominal surgery will mean a week in the hospital.

I have a 14 inch incision and he plans to reinforce the whole thing with mesh.

I must confess, when he told me I might be in the hospital a whole week, I was very upset and almost called it off.

    Ugh, so sorry
Here's hoping for laparoscopy! Does this mean that you'll soon have "abs of steel"?

    I need one too
but I am afraid of another surgery. I also have a large scar and a hernia in the upper part of my abdomen. I don't want to spend a week in the hosptial either. I know I should have it done and get it over with. I hope your repair goes well. I wish They could take out some of my fat while they are in there ,,lol..val

    Carlene,
I hope you can get the lap surgery too. I have heard the mesh mentioned before, and been curious about it. Does it go over the bowel, or in the incision part? Can it be cut into, if heaven forbid! you had to have another surgery?

    It goes between the outer
It goes between the outer layer of skin and the wall of the abdominal muscle. It tends to be more successful if the omentum is still in place, which mine, of course, is not. But I am still hopeful I can get by with the lap procedure. This guy is board certified and spent an additonal year, training just to repair hernias. He basically said he will spend up to an hour "chipping away" at scar tissue, and if an hour does not yield results, then he will open the old scar back up - not the whole 14 inches, but a good part of it.

And yes....they can just cut thru it if there was a need to open me back up.

    hernia surgery
Carlene I just had hernia surgery April 26th the mesh they put in me wasn't that big. My hernia was on the left side of my incision. I wasn't looking forward to the surgery either, I must admit the surgery was the easiest surgery I have ever had. Best of luck on your surgery.

    Hi Carlene
I just wanted to wish you good luck with your hernia surgery. I also had hernia surgery in 2008 in which they used mesh. But, the doctor did tell me that over time, the surgery might have to be redone. I wasn't able to have it done laparscopically because they fixed my hernia at the same time I had to have surgery for ovarian cancer.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a speedy recovery.

    Hernia
I'm also having surgery for a incisional hernia on Aug. 9th. My surgeon said he will make a incision on my scar from surgery in 2010 and put in a mesh, he said I should be able to go home the same day depending on how quickly I recover from anesthesia. My thoughts go out to you and I'm not looking forward to surgery but want my stomach back without the bulge.

    Best of luck,
    Joan

    Thinking of you
I will praying for outpatient hernia surgeries for you ladies! I also have a hernia, just above my belly button. I call it my little alien. No one has suggested that it needs repair yet, and quite frankly, I am sick of hospitals! I'll carry my alien with me and decide whether or not to deal with it next summer!

Hugs and Healing to all of you!

    Leesa....I understand
Leesa....I understand completely. I actually thought this would be day surgery. Had I known that they might keep me for a week, I probably would not have signed on for it, at all. But when I tried to back out, my husband wouldn't let me.

My hernia was a "little alien" too, but it keeps getting bigger. Now it's the size of a large cantaloupe. If I cough or sneeze (or pick up something heavy, strain, etc), mine hurts. It's a sharp, burning pain and I really notice it if I have a "fit" of sneezing or coughing. Plus, the bowel loops protruding thru mine can easily twist and cause a bowel obstruction. Having had one of those, I am very reluctant to chance another.

All my doctors except Dr Sabbatini have encouraged me to have it repaired, and he didn't really discourage me - just pointed out that it takes a month to recover, etc. He said, "You will have to take medicine for pain." What else is new....LOL

    Hernia surgery
    Hi. Carlene,
I have just had a torn right rectus muscle repair done with mesh, it was done at the same time as a second debulking for the first recurrence of my stage 3c ovca which was diagnosed October 2009. I think I would be doing a lot better but I have such a hard time with pain meds cant seem to find anything that suits me, I also have no appetite and bouts of nausea.. Next step is more chemo, not sure yet what I wIll be on my tissue was sent away for sensitivity testing. I was in the hospital four days and a week in rehab.
Good luck with your positive attitude you will do well.

I found this an interesting topic
I too have an incisional hernia. When I had a CT scan last November, my onc told me I was in remission - he said, "but" and I thought, "Oh no, what now?" He then told me I had a small incisional hernia. I was surprised and not too happy and said, "Does this mean more surgery, I've had enough surgery for two lifetimes!" We both laughed at that, and he said, "No, you can probably live with this but if it ever pains you, tell me."

I've been told not to put on too much weight as this will affect the hernia, so for now, I am living with it. It does stick out but I figure, "Hey! I'm feeling good and have my life and it's a small price to pay."

But I will be keeping close watch on it. So far, it hasn't given me any problem.
