Venom in the saliva from a shrew kills OVCA cells. Seriously. This is going into clinical trials soon.

    I read an article in Reader's Digest while at the dentist a few months ago about this. Starting stage 1 clinical trials later this year.

    Who's Afraid...
    of Virgina Woolf?...I thought of her character as soon as I saw the word shrew! Now, give me some of her 'shrewish' venom but take away the side effect of the nasty attitude.
    I looked up the quotes from this memorable movie and some of these made me laugh (it's a dark drama/comedy though, so beware). Just that attitude is good for fighting the little nasties.

    I find it heartbreaking that this biochemist has been working on this project for TEN YEARS!

    The other "big news" is that Dr. Stewart has discovered a way to screen for OVCA--that gives me an unbelievable sense of comfort as I have two wonderful, beautiful, amazing daughters who I hope never have to walk in my shoes. Ahhhhhhh...: )

    @Maria: Good thing for the shrews, they won't be needed anymore. The anti-cancer drug can be made synthetically now. I heard that shrews are voracious eaters, too, who would have thought they would love pepperoni?

    I didn't realize they were sweet. Maybe they just have had years and years of bad press. On the video, they really are cute, though.

    This sounds really quirky - kind of like pureed asparagus - but they are opening up clinical trials in Sept, I think. How many of you would sign up, if you fit the criteria? I would....in a heartbeat.

    And I hope people do make millions off this, if it works. I just want something to work. And vaccines that prolong remission seem to be the most promising.

    Therapeutic spit
    Well, there is a diabetes drug (Byetta) that was made from lizard spit. I've spoken to cancer researchers (biochemists) who told me that they are just testing EVERYTHING they can get their hands on from the natural world.

    The cancer researchers are upset with the PETA people who have made it a lot more difficult to do the animal trials on cancer drugs.

    They have to test compounds on brine shrimp and potato cancers FIRST before they can get to doing any experiments with animals. But I suppose that is only fair to animals. I'm glad the soricidin can be synthesized instead of collected from the shrews.

    I would sign up with no hesitation!
    I've been through 5 years of non-stop chemo of all kinds. If I can get through all that poison, what's a few litters of shrew spit!!!!!!
