MRI was a surprise sort of....

Today I had an MRI of both breasts. It is my first MRI. I knew the principles and knew I would be put into a cylinder. But, I didn't think about contrast-so I had an IV going the whole time, with dye injected. I found myself face down (with my forehead/face in a support device, breathing into some cloth--not too close to my face, though). My breasts were hanging down through some openings. I had my arms up above my head. The techs were nice, and put ear plugs and ear muffs on me, explaining that there would be loud noises at intervals. Wow, that was so true! Then, I got to stay like that for 30 minutes without moving...PS-the dye or something made me nauseated all afternoon...

Had the test because after my last lumpectomy (six wks ago), the incision site has remained very red, and there are hard knots under the skin. This is the third lumpectomy and was in the scar line of my cancerous one from 2009. This "lump" was only scar tissue--YEAH--but they took out a half dollar sized lump plus margins. I guessed that the hardness might be lumphatic fluid collecting? I wondered if the constant redness was due to that being the site that was radiated in 2010...
Anyway, will get the MRI test results "probably next week." My onc thinks it is nothing serious, but wanted to do the MRI just in case...
Fun, fun morning---NOT! MRI was more of a big deal than anticipated...

    What???? You didn't enjoy
What???? You didn't enjoy being injected with dye, forced to lie with your breasts "dangling" while Snow White's 7 dwarves and all of their Heigh-Ho friends were excavating mines using jackhammers next to your ears???? What's not to like??!!!

The good news , it seems, is that your oncologist is not worried!!! In that case, I won't be worried either~ and I also don't want you to be!

    Have a happy, stress-free weekend!

    Hugs,
    Chen♥

    Grrrr to MRI's!
I hate those MRI's! We are not in a comfortable position to start with and then I was there for over an hour while they took a zillion pictures. And, the NOISE, awful. The techs kept talking to me and they had classic rock music on for me, but, it was still hard to hear for the noise of the machine.

I didn't get sick from the contrast, but, wasn't that a strange feeling when they first released it into the IV. I felt like I was going to pee, which they told me would happen. Very strange!

I will praying that your MRI will show something very simple and easily fixed if at all. Let us know your results.

Glad that is behind you now,

Sybil, I just had one last week
I also had a lumpectomy with a re-excision for margins back in Dec. '09. I have quite a large amount of scar tissue (really hard) and a seroma along with very dense breast tissue. I'll be having one of these every year now. From what my doctors say, this is really the best way to make sure that area is disease free.

Good luck on your results--mine turned out fine.

I have had two in the last
I have had two in the last two weeks at different hospitals. First the hour long one to try to rule out cancer. Second the MRI guided breast biopsy that did confirm cancer. The first was the worst because I didnt really know what to expect. At least with the biopsy one you were in and out of the machine. And since it was at an actual breast cancer center they were a hundred times better with compassion. Just reaaaallllly glad I am not claustrophobic. Jayne

You must be having a day like me
You must be having a bad day like me.I had a mammo today.I was told I needed a ultrasound. Now I am going to get a biopsy. There were 2 cysts he is sure of and thinks the 3rd one is a cyst but double checking. He stressed he thought it was a cyst but this waiting to get the aspiration is nerve wracking.

Wishing you the best with your MRI results. Hoping they found NO cancer.

When the doctor was up front and said he thinks it is nothing made me feel better.

Hoping all news from the MRI
Hoping all news from the MRI is good news. I have never had one so I can't relate to the confinement, noise etc. But I did had a biopsy done twice with my boob hanging down and staying still but not as long as MRI's are. It was so weird to lay there and have someone beneath me taking samples. Again, prayers that news will be good, good, good.

    when I had mine,
I think I said something my dad always had told me, "mind over matter" 500 times and that is how I made it through.

    Prayers are with you,

    Makes me wonder who invented
Makes me wonder who invented the "chest" MRI machine? I wonder if guys had to lie face down on a table with their junk hanging down into a hole cut into the table, if the whole process might be a little different?

I had to have two MRI's one pre-chemo and the other post chemo. I couldn't believe the results when my oncologist had my tumor pictures side by side. Amazing technology... even though it's uncomfortable and lengthy... it sure gives awesome images.

Sending prayers Sybil for good results...

    OPEN MRI MACHINES....
You can request to have a breast MRI or a " regular " MRI to be done in an open machine....no way am I going in that "tube" ....lol. I've always requested the open machine...I have to go to an Imaging Center to have it done as opposed to the cancer center, but trust me it's soooo much better! Plus taking a good dose of Xanax, with permission, makes it a whole lot easier....plus I always keep my eyes closed!

    Hope everyone's results are good..
    Hugs,
    Nancy

not a pleasant experience for sure. I had to stay in that position for 45 minutes! Because I had bilateral mastectomy there will be no more of those for me. I've had many other MRI's but that one took the cake!

And yes, I hate MRI's! Uncomfortable and that loud noise. Sounds like those emergency tests they have on tv. lol
