Warts
Most of the information that I have read regarding HPV in males, most specifically concerning Gardasil. It always seems to target genital warts, though we here all know that HPV is a big contributor to H&N Cancer.
Funny that you should mention warts...not that I have ever had any type of genital warts. I always had a history of havng warts, mainly seed warts as a kid. They would seem to be mainly on my elbows..I remember my mother havinf them burned off, frozen and cut off, eventually they never came back.
After my teen years, I would occasionally get one on a finger now and then. Usually just bought the Compound W or something similar and they would go away...
Wondering if there is any relationship or just coincidence?

A quick update, I am now almost 4 yr. post treatments from tonsilar cancer that DNA testing tied to HPV 16. As I understand it, of the 140PLUS HPV strains there are only a few that are known to proceed to cancer. I think the highest risk of them is HPV 16, but also 18, and 33> Maybe others, I don't remember. Anyway, I think a HNC victim has to ask for specific HPV strain identification. In other words, if you have/had warts, I don't think they are caused by the high-risk HPV strains. They may be a hassle, but can be treated with medication. But, I don't think they necessarily lead to SCC.
Having said all of that though, I did have warts on my elbows and wrist many years ago. I too used Comp W and they eventually went away and have not returned for probably 25 years or more.
So, you've got me wondering..................coincidentally (or not?), my warts were usually on my left side...............my HPV 16 positive SCC was in my left tonsil and left side of neck lymph nodes................HMMMMMMMMMMMM??

I too had warts when I was young. Mainly on my right hand. My scc was my right tonsil. My eldest son had many warts on his right hand also. This has got me very curious. Anyone else remember having external warts as a child0 -

Hey Pam. My rad onc told me there was a 98 percent chance it was hpv. They don't test in Australia. I'm trying to change that. One small voice at a time. Xxxx0 -

I did, however, have a bout with abnormal pap smears and cervical carcinoma in situ when I was in college. My tumor was highly positive for HPV-16. I asked for a full spectrum HPV test, and I believe they tested for all strains.

Have been researching this HPV thing. As I said, back in the mid nineties I had a polyp removed from my false vocal cord. It was an inverted papilloma, it was benign, however there was a large likelihood that it would return, but it usually returns in the form of SCC, that's exactly what happened to me 14 years later, and it was at the exact same spot as the papilloma. Most warts are caused by the HP virus, most of them are not dangerous. There are some called faroukas (spelling) and plantar warts, 90% of warts are caused by HPV< nd as many as 75% of the population will have HPV at some time in their lives, but it can go as quick as it came. Papillomas are different, they can recur as SCC. Interesting stuff0 -
HPV Connection
Actually the more I thought about my comments and information I have read on HPV. I don't necessarily see where warts might be a precursor to HPV. Maybe people with warts are more prone to contracting HPV that developes eventually into cancer, not sure.
HPV as you mentioned, most if not all of us are exposed during our lives, more than likely multiple times. Through whatever means that's not totally understood to date, but usually the body rids it.

I too had a lot of them as a kid, but after I got to be about 18 teen they went away. Now I get molds (Hope I spelled that right) and every time my cancer is active they get big and reddish and start to itch. I asked my doctor if there are any relation between Cancer and Molds and he said no….

Hey hondo. I think you mean moles. Spots on the skin. That gave me a little giggle. Mold ( mould) is what happens to old cheese. Hence the giggle xxxx0 -

I can only remember a single wart which I had on my left ring finger that would come and go well into my 40's or early 50's. Likewise my cancer involvement was on the left side. My biopsy's were not tested for HPV so I'm not sure of that status.

LOL, and your point being.......you know you are talking to Hondo...it might very well be moldy old cheese.....LOL.

Papillomas
Hi All,
Pat just recently had a biopsy due to a suspicious area on vocal cord. He is 20 months post chemoreirradiation for cancer of epiglottis and neck. The biopsy came back negative for cancer - it was a squamous papilloma. I specifically asked if this was a precursor to cancer or if it was the same strain that causes HPV+ SCC. (Pat's cancer was not tested for HPV). Both the ENT and oncologist said not to worry. Both said that the likelihood of it turning into cancer is small and that while the strains are similar, very few papillomas turn into cancer. If they do, the latency is years.
I am having a hard time believing that the two are not connected, but I am trying to follow the doctors' advice and not worry.

Mine did turn into cancer and it was 14 years later. Remember though they were talking about inverted papillomas, which mine was, the incidence factor is greater for these type of papilloma's0 -
