Calling on my friends here with a question. I couldn't find an answer in the Social Security website. My husband has been on SS Disability for about 12 years. Does anyone know when you reach the actual SS age(66 in our case), whether or not you remain on disability benefits or just transfer to regular SS, and also would your monthly amount change?

I know most of you are a much younger age, but if anybody knows, please chime in.

Thanks,

Wolfen

    Hey Gail,
Glad that your morning started out good and hope it continues. You mentioned wanting to try Neurontin for your neuropathy earlier. I know JBG takes(or has taken) it. I believe she didn't much like it because it made her real sleepy. You might try sending her a pm and asking.

    Thanks Raquel,

Let me know what you find out.

    Luv Ya both,

    Hi
I am 58 and I have been collecting SSDI for about 3 years now. I spoke to someone at SS recently. I was widowed at 45 and wasnt sure what would happen, would I collect on my late husbands, revert to SS when I reached the age?
They told me that nothing will change. SSDI is in place of SS.
I make out better collecting on myself, my husband was civil service and I get a separate pension from that but he didnt pay into SS, only civil service..they said nothing would change when I get older and I dont have to do anything. the only change would have been if I would get more collecting on him.
I think you are better off calling them. The website is confusing I think

    Unfortunately
From what I was told and actually read in my paperwork, was that when I reach SS age, it will drop to regular Social Security amount. So you can expect a reduction in monetary benefits when that happens. The following is from their website:
"If you are still receiving disability benefits when you reach full retirement age, your disability benefits will automatically convert to retirement benefits."
Which means, you start SS and are no longer on SSDI.

This is what they told me, hopefully my person was wrong, I guess one has to ask specifically will the dollar amount change. That would answer the question, because if you ask if there are any changes they say no, but then you read where when reaching full retirement age, your benefits become your normal retirement benefits. Got to love our confusing system. But this is what I was told...You will be on SS when you reach the full age for social security, in other words, instead of 62 you would start SS at 65 years of age. It would start when you reach the maximum age to apply for social security not the age of 62 when you could first apply. It's because they no longer consider you disabled from WORKING, since this would be your normal retirement age. They tell you nothing will change, because you will still be on social security, BUT they make the distinction that it will now be social security benefits, by nothing changing, they mean that you do not have to do any paperwork, that you will automatically go over to SS with your medicare etc.

    The disability payments just
The disability payments just transfer over to the retirement side. This happened to my husband 2 years ago. You do not have to do anything. The dollar amount does not change.

    Thank You All
Thanks everyone for your replies. Just trying to think ahead for the future, if there is one. Whoops, I guess there is. The time clock has passed the currently predicted "rapture" for this time around.
