in Head and Neck Cancer #1
I was just thinking the other day when my husband made a comment to his sister about there is no cure for cancer. But, we have chemo, readiation and surgery that seems to kill/remove the cancer. I see alot of people are cancer free for many years. Some may think that is a cure. What do you think. Let the debating begin.

    Nothing Definitive or Certain
    I guess it all depends on how you interpret the comment...

    There is no cure as for a positive, definitive cure. Sometimes you can treat it succesfully as for gettting rid of it with no evidense of the disease remaining (or detectable). But sometimes you can't for various reasons.

    Also, a biggie...there are many different types of cancer and many variables that come into play.

    What stage or how long has it gone untreated or detected. What kind of cancer, where's it located. Personal history, family history, personal health and condition....many many variables come to mind.

    While I feel this is probably the best time ever to have cancer if you get it. This is through many years or trials and error, success and failure, technology, education and disease history.

    Ayways,just a few on my thoughts on your debate...

    no cure
    I'll feel there is a cure when you can go to the doctor, take a pill or shot and it's gone. It would even be better if it could be managed....much like heart disease and diabetes. I HATE cancer!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's make it our mission to pray every night and those that can have a day of fasting once a week for a cure or better treatments. we could all fast (those wh are able)the same day each weeek. Much prayer , much power. I am a caregiver. My mom has cancer.

    I am a caregiver as well. My husband will be finishing his treatments next week. I hope and pray that he is disease free. Hope your mom is beating the beast..

    Good topic, must look at it different ways, but the last disease that the Medical Field cured was Polio. They have stopped Small Pox in many Countries, but that is about it as far as major cures.

    I concider a diseased cured when we are given a shot in order to prevent it from ever happening. Until then, we are only able to put things into remission, which is still a very large and important issue. Thank goodness for the medical field and all the people involved in research. Also, the brave people that volunteer for clinical trials.

    yes, curable vs. treatable
    yes, curable vs. treatable will be a question. Either way, we have to survive/live with what has happened. Really, there are no guarantees for anyone's life, cancer or not. I choose to embrace the possibility that this cancer doesn't recur. There are so many survivors out there and we have to live every day with hope.

    what's the diff?
    If the medicos give you a treatment and you never have a recurrence, what difference does it make, within the confines of your experience? For all intents and purposes, you're cured.

    My radiation chemotherapist actually uses the term "cured," which seems to be pretty rare for doctors.

    I think what people are confusing is "a cure"-- which might work for some cases but not all, and "the cure"-- some universal silver bullet that always works. We have the former, but not the latter.
