Hi everyone,

just an update, been ill for a few days.

I went in for stoma reversal and hernia repair 9 days ago.
i have had a yoyoing temp from 39 to 36 over the last week and some pain that was sometimes extreme. this reminded me of the worst pain from the rectal radiation damage about 10 months ago.

I have been on iv anti biotics for 2 days now. they appear to be helping.

now the irony is i have another stoma bag fitted. its a clear plastic baby stoma bag that really suits the stoma repair site. how ironic i go to stop wearing bags and i still have a bag on. that now collects the blood discharge from the wound site.

I have been getting a few fake contractions in the bottom, not pleasant but manageable. had what i would judge as a well formed stool tonight for the first time, so the bowels are fine and the temp issues got my mind off it.

its actually been a relaxing time in hospital reading, meditating and going to the loo. a private room with ensuite is so essential.

this has just been another day in the colorectal journey for me, but i won't forget waking up 3.30am just now, and having the wound explode a little with blood everywhere, the bag over the stoma repair site is such a good dressing idea. i feel sorry the little babies that use these baby stoma bags. its 5.30am now and i have been redressed as i also had a leakage from the first baby stoma bag. i have listening to claude debussey moonlight melodies.

hugs to all,
pete

I didn't realize you had had BOTH done at the same time, the stoma takedown AND the hernia repair! I guess I had a momentary detachment of brain from body when I read your posts earlier.

My surgeon said that he was rather hesitant about doing both surgeries at the same time due to serious risk of infection from one site to the next. Is that what happened with yours Pete? If so, I'd be tempted to give my surgeon a serious weddgie the next time he/she came by to check on me ;)

it seems in infection in the fat
    hi ancienttiger,

    will ask surgeon ?

based on the post op ct, the infection was in the fat layer only and the bowel, hernia repair etc were fine. i gather its pretty common on these takes downs for post op infection.

its been a tough week but worth it in a sense.

i don't take being cured for granted!

    Pete,
    so sorry to hear it

    Pete,
so sorry to hear it has been a struggle for you. It always amazes me how so people sail through the reversal and others don't. Just take care of yourself and know that this too shall pass.

    Hugs,
    Kathy

    hi kathy,

I sailed through the reversal and the hernia repair. Its just the infection was like a big storm at the end, but thats life. Given the time its taken for the bowels to start playing the game, the extra week in hospital has not been a big waste. I could have spent it at home on the loo or here on the loo. being in hospital has been great besides the pain. the food and the movies and nurses are so good at saint vincents. its more like a resort you don't have to pay for.

a little time to consider my reprieve from crc has also been useful.

going home in about 3 hours. feeling really good. driving myself, got to pickup the kids from school and take them to swimming squad. out of the pan and into the fire. no rest for me.

    hugs,
    pete

i just picked the best hospital in sydney
if you get sick in sydney go to saint vincents hospital near the city center. all the nurses are stunning and caring and the doctors are not so bad either.

the kids loved the cable channels. they are putting in lcd tv soon. I suggested a minimum of 42 inches. they could update the remote. at the moment it does nurse call, tv channels, volume and lights.

the next version could also do blinds, doors and bed as well and maybe some room service.

the high speed wifi is also great and a selection of morning papers also helped.

they have real cappacino machines on the morning and afternoon tea trolleys. I wish I still drank coffee and hot chocolate. but i always got some and left the for friends and kids.

the food is second to none and is more like going to a restaurant than a hospital. they cook all the meals onsite. I am going home leaner, stronger and healthier. not a bad 11 days. they have lemon sorbet for dessert for lunch and dinner if you want. Often I would have a fresh fruit plater for dessert.

don't ask about the cost OUCH!!!!!! but at thats my insurance issue, i just pay$250 excess and get all the benefits.

if you have to suffer pain, i say "do it in style and smile"

yes i appreciate modern medicine, the doctors, the nurses and hospitals. so many have wished me well from the cleaners, to kitchen staff, to nurses. all the staff here are simply exceptional.

    hugs,
    pete

ps this is a private hospital and its profits go the the "sisters of charity" to support the public hosital next door. who profits from the profit well, GOD, but he reinvests all the profits to help the needy. not a bad guy when you get to know him.

    Glad
    Hi Pete,

I'm glad you're in a good hospital, makes such a huge difference. Hoping you'll be home in your own bed soon (you might try pushing the button to make the mattress go up and down, now that you're used to it!)
Let us know when you're home and then do lots of resting to make your body heal up. The hospital is never a good place to try to get a good night's rest.

    Take care-
    Lisa

    Awesome
Sounds like you are just coming along fine and now you will be going home soon. That is awesome. Remember to walk walk walk. Glad that your bowels are starting to get back to normal. I'm 1 1/2 years out and I'm still not normal, but it's better than a year ago. Good luck on your recovery and hope you are up to speed very quickly. Bet you can't wait to get home :)
