Here I sit

Here I sit. Tired and sore and wishing I was home. MSKCC is a wonderful hospital with great staff and facilities. I am sure I could not have recovered from the surgery as quickly at home, but I have become restless and this place has begun to wear on me. I am scheduled to go home tomorrow, probably late afternoon.

What an odd turn of events. I have a permanent ileostomy just as planned, but no plans for followup cancer treatment. I don't have cancer! What I have might be worse, we do not know, but all indications seem to be a chronic infection of some kind (CDC to investigate). All my symptoms are/were cancer type symptoms and none for infection. Odd, huh? The bone has been eaten away, there are fast growing masses all down there, I have a colon blockage from the masses (hence the perm ileo) and it is all acting just like cancer, but it isn't. The whole mess is as serious as cancer, but probably infinitely more treatable (again probably). Still scared, but knowing that I do not have sacral cancer is somehow reassuring. No wonder my CEA was unaffected! Now they have to puzzle out why nothing else was effected and how this happened so quickly and of course come up with a cure ASAP. Right now I am just on a broad spectrum antibiotic.

I have read through the first page of posts trying to get caught up and I am pretty overwhelmed, let me tell you. I wish I was feeling well enough to comment on some posts, but I am just not up to it yet. God knows many of you could use the encouragement and are going through so muhc as well. It will have to be a generic CSN prayer for you all for a while. I hope to get well enough to get back into the swing of things soon - be at peace!

Rick

    Dear Rick
If you have to come up with a good news/bad news post...I guess you win the prize.

So very happy that you do not have sacral cancer, and pray that the CDC gets on the stick and finds out what you do have and how to fix it pronto!

Rest up, heal up and keep on the CDC and the docs to come up with a cure for that 'unknown' problem.

    Hugs,

    Marie

    Hopefully it is easily
Hopefully it is easily treatable once they get a line on the problem. Did chemo leave much WBC before this happened?

"Always expect the unexpected". What a turn in the story, Rick.

    You're almost out of there!
    Hi Rick,

I'm so glad to hear it's not cancer, but I know you have the worry about what it actually is and what can be done about it. Hang in there- I will pray that you're well enough to get out soon and that the doctors can figure out what the actual problem is and how to treat it. Take care!!

    Rick:
Good news in this mess is it is not cancer. Bad news is what the heck is it. At least you are at one of the best hospitals to get things figured out and a treatment plan put into action.

    Take care - Tina

    That's great it's not
That's great it's not cancer. It's been a few days now have they figured out yet what is going on, or are they just waiting to see if the antibiotics are doing their job. Hopefully they're working and your getting better!! Leena
