Deodorant vs. No Deodorant - Relationship to BC?

Hi sisters-

I was wondering what you thought about deodorant in relationship to BC. I know there is no proof of it causing, but there are articles suggesting such possibilities. How toxic can this be for your body?

I know it sounds antigenic not to use a form of fragrance. But how safe is it to use it? Has anyone here stopped using deodorant because of fear?

I asked because I have stopped. I guess I've become paranoid about a few things after this diagnosis - searching for answers.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your opinion(s)....

    who knows
Yes there have been some studies suggesting antiperspirant is a culprit.. the theory being that it blocks underarm sweating and excreting of toxins...it's never been proven just like the too tight bra/underwire theory, cell phone/brain cancer, autism/vaccine links and so on and so on. But why tempt fate I guess... I use a deodorant, I do not use antiperspirant... it's hard sometimes to find just deodorant.. everything is both combined , that's why I usually go to a man's deodorant.. it's easier to find just a deodorant for men....and you can get something unscented if you prefer. It's hard not to become paranoid nowadays esp with all the conflicting studies.

    Cancer loves sugar, cancer
Cancer loves sugar, cancer loves soy, cancer loves alcohol~ you name it, there is some study showing that cancer loves it!!! I thought I was going to give up just about everything but breathing to keep the beast at bay~ coffee enemas administered by orangutans while I was suspended upside down on vines only found in rainforests every 7000 years or something! The list is sooooo endless!

I have decided to Live My Life~ for however long it lasts! I am not reckless; I eat well and exercise, and LOVE my fruits and veggies. But I also love a glass ( or 2) of wine and OMG the occasional martini with olives!!!! I wondered if living life in an austere fashion would give me length, but not quality and little laughter. I did think about it...and then I remembered two good CSN friends. One was a vegan, non smoker, runner, who died of Lung Cancer (!!) the other a man who survived Viet NAm, and cancer and then died on his way to give his granddaughter away at her wedding~ his wife fell asleep at the wheel on their way to the ceremony.
    That's my take, anyway!

    Love you!

    Must love Chen's comment!
Must love Chen's comment! Especially loved the coffee enemas reference.

I don't know anything about deodorant causing cancer. However, I recently discovered the wonders of coconut oil! I have eczema, and my husband strongly believes that my strong eczema creams (stereoids) stunted my breast development as a young teenager. As my eczema has gotten much better (after I learned what foods cause it!), my breasts have grown from an A to a large B cup in a few (adult!) years. My husband believes this is because I have used less cream. So since my cancer diagnosis I threw out my eczema cream and have learned to control my eczema 100% only with coconut oil!

Now finally to the point that can help YOU, I learned that some even put the oil under their arms as it is antiseptic. I have done the same and not used deodorant/antiperspirant in two months! It works! Only side effect is that you walk around smelling like a coconut :)

    Deodorant
I've never heard this about deodorant. Other things mentioned like cell phones, soy, cigarettes etc I know about.I use my cell and sometime I talk on it awhile but usually use our home phone. The soy issue I talked to my doctor about.Soy milk and Ensure(contains alot of soy)I should not drink. I told the doctor everything I read has soy.She said things that have small amounts like a brownies etc is fine.BUT stay away for foods/drinks with alot of soy.If you eat that it will contradicate the tamoxifin.

Cigarettes were not a problem for me.I never smoked but my husband does.It has caused a issue with us.He goes to the basement in the winter but I sometimes have to tell him.He thinks if I am in another room he can get away with it.But I smell it.My sense of smell is worse now since he has quit around me. Like my doctor said I am in withdrawal even though I never smoked.

I'm not a big fruit or veggie eater so I drink at least 2-3 glasses of FUSION to get my daily requirement.Love garlic so eat garlic bread/butter and bread sticks about 3 times a week.I read where garlic is good for you.

I live in a rural area and bothered about the chemicals. My back yard is a cornfield. This is something that is causing me great concern.Love my house but it might need to be sold.I would go that far to protect my health.

I got a couple of underwire bras once.I hated them. Then I read where they were not good for you as far as causing breast cancer. I can believe it.They are so uncomfortable. They HURT

I still wear deodorant & use
I still wear deodorant & use an antiperspirant/deodorant. I was never told by my doctor not to, and I don't believe I have any reason not to use it. If deodorant caused breast cancer I would think that there would be millions more men out there getting diagnosed with it. Then again, I do tend to live dangerously. I do use artificial sweeteners, and probably talk too long on my cell phone & stand too close to my microwave. I eat red m&m's and don't spend the extra money to make sure the beef i buy is free range, organic, and/or hormone free.
Plus, if I decided to quit using deodorant people probably wouldn't want to stand too close to me.

    Following surgery
(I had bilateral mastectomy) my surgeon said not to use any deodorant at all. When he gave me the ok it was several weeks later and he said as long as it did not contain any aluminum. So I went to the Health Food store and bought all natural deodorant. It works well except for wetness. I finished rads in Feb and started to use antiperpirant a month or so later. I've used antiperspirants all my life and did not feel dry enough using just deodorant. If my surgeon suggests I stop, I will.

I also stocked up on coconut
I also stocked up on coconut water for the chemo! Has loads of potassium. Tomorrow I have to start my 1.7 liters / day of fluids. First chemo on Wednesday.

I buy my coconut oil at wholefoods in the oil section, its about 10 bucks, but Im sure you can order it online, just do a search on amazon. Be sure its organic and extra virgin. Let me know how you like it!

That's Myth Has Been "Out There" Forever
I don't buy into it. I still wear it and don't even think twice about it. I'm still here. Until they have solid, scientific proof, I wouldn't put one ounce of energy into worrying about it. JMO.

    I think this myth started
I think this myth started because deodorant is in the vicinity of the breast. It never made a lick of sense to me and the research just doesn't back it up.

I read about the theory of antiperspirants
along time ago, but disregarded them. Then I was dx'd and went with the natural stuff. Tom's smelled like vegetable soup and I ended up using Crystal - the solid. I just sweat thru it. Hot flashes scream for antiperspirant and I went back to it. I don't know...
    another one of those choices...

Thank You ALL for your responses. I was just curious to know what you all thought. I stopped using deodorant and use baby powder. It doesn't last long though. I sweat a lot. :/
