A weird question

This is a weird one for me and I have been on google to see if this is true. Maybe this forum can answer this question for me.

Does cancer have a smell and are there those people that can smell it?

I will continue to see what I can find and see that there are many post from people, but nothing official from American Cancer Society, etc.

Thanks for your help.

Thomas

    Strange ? indeed
Don't know; however I have heard of dogs alerting to cancer in someone. They say the dog can smell it.

    Thomas,
There is some (I believe still sketchy) evidence that dogs may be able to smell cancer, and the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is currently sponsoring a formal study on this. You might try searching her website for more information: http://www.dslrf.org/

    Dogs amd Cats
I have heard of dogs and cats that could detect a problem - not necessarily cancer. We had a cat at one of the nursing homes I worked at that defiately did 'hit on' (for lack of better words) on many issues. I know someoe who has a service dog that will allert before she has an issue so it can be handled. People 'smelling' cancer - I don't think so - but is possible. There will always be 'quacks' trying to sell themselves - animals have nothing to sell.

    THANKS
Thanks for the responses so far, but it seems that there are claims that people can smell the cancer, but nothing proven to whether or not they can actually smell it. I have had 2 people now tell me that they stated that they could smell the cancer from my late wife on my clothes. That is weird and if they can in fact smell it, then maybe I should get checked myself.

    Thanks again.

As far as I know, cancer
As far as I know, cancer doesn't smell. I have never heard of that.

    I've heard
I've heard people say that they could but only at the very end when people are at the end of thier lives. I used to work in a nursing home years ago and some would claim there was a smell to cancer. Perhaps this is what your friends were able to detect. I think nowdays if any one would know the answer to this question it would be a Hospice nurse. I believe if people can smell cancer it would be at the end stages.

    IF someone could 'smell'
IF someone could 'smell' cancer - then they should be able to tell someone to get checked early. To say that "I can 'smell' cancer" once someone is DX'd or in end stages - that's just a "snake oil" salesmen as I see it - fact is already known.

    weird for me
Sounds really weird, but my kitty, who was 2 at the time, began to always want to stay by-- or on one of my breasts. Turns out, in a few months, I was diagnosed! Coincidence, not sure.

    They heard recent reports that
some dogs can smell cancer although that is still under study. As far as humans, never heard of it. Maybe it's because we don't have a keen sense of smell like our four legged friends.

    Hope all is well!

    People
I don't feel that people can smell it.

I do know dogs and cats detect cancer and have alerted their owner of cancer. It happened to a friend of mine. Her dog jumped on her.She started having pains(didn't have any before).Went to doctor and within less than 3 weeks she was having tests, surgery, blood work and starting chemo. Her doctor said they can't waste a minute. It was fast growing.

If the dog hadn't jumped on her she wouldnt be here today. She knows that. She has been given 6 more years when it could have been 6 days weeks or months.

    ...
I am sorry for your loss.

    Ummm, insensitive friends? i dunno...

It seems that some people claim to be able to smell cancer but not actually been proven insofar as I know. However, dogs can be trained to detect cancer(s). Dunno, if all dogs and all cancers though...

I have never heard of people
I have never heard of people being able to smell cancer, I don't think out noses are sensitive enough. But dogs can,the weird thing is that one of my customers dogs kept hitting on mine before I was diagnoses. Unfortunately, I didn't realize what he was doing..
He kept pocking at me only at the one spot. After chemo was about 1/2 over he stopped doing that. And I had a complete response to chemo...We should pay more attention to out animals I guess.. Nice to see you here again Thomas!
