I'm sorry you have to go through all this. I had the same surgery back in Sept. I would suggest, if I might, that you stay at least one night in hospital. It really is a significant surgery and they can give you the good drugs in hospital that you can't get at home. I also wanted to come right home but decided to stay instead and I'm glad I did! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

You may change your mind about staying in the hospital for at least one night. But it's up to you. I was out of it most of the time, but was glad to go home the next day.

Sure you are scared and sad. Just take care of yourself. Talk to the others who had this kind of surgery. I know " we are all different " and get some idea's on pre and post care. Sometimes this helps take some of the fear away. We will all be by your side know matter what. It's will be a very busy room. Hang in there, Hugs and prayers

you will be in my thoughts and prayers next Tuesday as you go for surgery. I had bilateral mastectomy in June 2010. My oxygen levels were not good so I spent the night. I actually spent another night just to feel better before going home. I wish you the best outcome. The drains are the worse part but doable. Make sure someone helps you in moving your arms so that you don't get too stiff.

On the prayer list
I am putting you on the prayer list. I don't know how it goes in your state but in Michigan if you decide to go home a bit early, they have to send a visiting nurse out to check on you for several days to a week depending on your level of need. If it works that way there, then going home will be ok. Consider this, If you are the type of person that cannot stand to see the housework not done then take the extra day in the hospital. Why put yourself in a position where you feel torn? However, if you are good at letting go, or have help that can come in to do what you would have done, by all means go home as it will likely aid your recovery. I know you will make the right decison for yourself.0 -

Dawne, we will all be thinking of you as you take this first step in your journey. As many above have said, you might reconsider your decision to at least stay overnight...the nurses are skilled in keeping you comfortable, and that is a very serious surgery. Just a thought. My thoughts and prayers will be with you, not only on your surgery day, but now as it approaches. I think the anticipation of what was to come was very hard and stressful. I had a mastectomy of the left breast and immediate reconstruction this past January. You may want to rethink staying in the hospital for at least one night. You are having major surgery and the hospital staff will check on you and make sure that you are progressing as you should. My son stayed with me in my hospital room the night of my surgery. I had said that I didn't want him too, but I was so glad that he did. You may want to think about having someone there with you if you decide to stay. Sometimes we have to let ourselves be cared for instead of being a caregiver.0 -

Thank you all for you positive thoughts, kind words, and prayers. I don't think my Dr will send me home if there is any problems. I just really don't want to stay in the hospital. I want to come home where I can be comfortable. I will keep ya'll posted.

My prayers are with you
I had a left side mastectomy on Feb 28th. I did go home the same day. I just hated the thought of staying in the hospital, the memories of having my babies and the nurse coming in to check on me like every hour did it for me. I will say that I did have two people at home to help me for a couple days and if I did not I might have reconsidered.
I also understand the scared and sad part. I did not think this part would be so hard but when it came down to it I was caught off guard. Thankfully I had my mom, two of my friends and my husband with me. That really helped with the waiting before surgery. I wish you luck on your surgery.0 -

I had mine in February and I agree with the others that suggest to stay at least one night. Having a nurse check your stats, make sure your pain is managed right is so important to good recovery. I know for me it made a huge difference.
