Please Advise! How to keep your Scalp Healthy After Losing Hair.

Hi again!

I am planning to trim my hair really short before it falls out. My question for you is, how did you keep your scalp healthy? Did you use regular shampoo? Did you cover it with any special hat, like 100% cotton? I would like to use something that wraps around my head that I can also wear at home.

Please Advise!

    I washed my head
    with baby shampoo...

    And I actually used both scarves and wigs. My hair fell out during the winter months so it wasn't so bad wearing the wigs to work.

    I think it's a good idea to trim your hair before it falls out. I shaved mine and I'm not sure that was a great idea, because then what fell out was like whiskers everywhere and my head was a bit tender.
    I just used a mild soap on my head (they say Ivory is not really mild at all). I used a kind from the local health food store.
    I had a cute hat that I wore at first that was cotton/poly and I ended up getting some little bumps like a rash on my head. I switched to 100% cotton scarfs and hats and it cleared right up.

    Don't use soap on your scalp, it only dries it out! I used shampoo and have had no complaints.

    I used Nioxin shampoo.....
    and it kept my scalp clear and free from bumps. It also helped when my hair started growing back in. You can get it at a lot of salons. It's expensive $16 but it works.

    I used Johnson's Baby Shampoo until I had about 2 inches of hair. I just figured if it was mild enough for a baby's scalp it would be fine for me. Worked well and never had any trouble.

    I also used baby shampoo and sometime even a conditioner. I never had any probs with mine. I did not wear wigs often it was to hot. I wore bandanas and baseball caps mostly. God Bless

    I did everything I could
    I used my regular shampoo but it's a salon brand so I knew it had been good to my hair, baby shampoo dries it out. I also used my conditioner and put a good moisturizer on my scalp every day until the peach fuzz got to make it a mess instead of getting to my scalp. Someone suggested emu oil but I never got around to trying that. I also went hatless etc. while in the house but hat something on my head every time I went out, even if just to get the mail. I had hats, scarves, wigs and wraps of 100% cotton jersey. Of course the kittens had to wash my head for me every now and then but they gave that up when my hair really started to come back.

    About 8 days
    after each chemo treatment I would get some acne on my head. My dermatologist recommended I use head & shoulders and it worked. Since finishing chemo I use a mild shampoo I bought at the hospital boutique. When that's done I'll use baby shampoo until my hair is long enough to get a haircut. I do try to massage my head while washing it.

    My onc. nurse told me not to shave my head, just trim real short. She said if you shave it, then there is no hair to pull the root out and you can get acne on your head because the hair root is under the skin. Once my hair fell out I would just use the same cleaner on my head that I used on my face in the shower. I wore a wig to work for meetings, but wore cotten scarves and cotten baseball caps the rest of the time.

    I just buzzed mine too, and
    I just buzzed mine too, and was told to use shampoo and conditioner and it seemed to do ok. I would also use babywipes on my head to keep it moist :)

    I used baby shampoo. I never lost all of my hair, my husband shaved my head with his clippers when it had thinned out drastically, and I had alot of stubble throughout chemo. I always washed my scalp with baby shampoo, and the most of the time I wore either silk headscarves (bought some gorgeous designer ones on ebay!), or soft cotton knit caps. Over the winter my poor head was so cold, I bought a pink cashmere stocking cap on ebay. It was SO soft and SO warm.

    Baby shampoo would be the gentlest on your scalp I would think.
