Mum is home now!

Dear all,

Mum is home now! Today is only the 5th day after the liver resection and the doctor let her come home this morning. We only learnt that they have also removed her gall bladder yesterday ... a big shock for all of us!

She is recovering well, can talk, can walk, can do some light leg exercises, can eat (although not much appetite). Her foot are all swollen and has diarrhea again! Diarrhea just cannot leave her alone! Before she was dx, she had diarrhea all her life, during chemo, severe diarrhea, after liver resection, still has diarrhea?! Even the doctor doesn't understand why!

Thank you very much for your good vibes, encouragements, prayers and support!!! You are all rock!
Lots of love and hugs
Dora

    Hi Dora
Hi Dora, glad your Mum is home and sounds to be doing well. Don't let her over do it :) Is she taking anything for the diarrhea? Meds? If not, they will probably help her.

    Hi Dora,

I'm glad to hear your mum is now home from the hospital. When I had my liver resection, they surprised me as well by telling me afterwards that they also removed my gallbladder. They said that due to where they resected the liver, the gallbladder would have been left "hanging by a thread", so they took it out.

Keep an eye on your mum's swelling and diarrhea situation- make sure she's getting prescription strength anti-diarrheal medicines. If one isn't working, there's usually stronger that they can give. It's important for her to get that under control. She can also try and help it by monitoring what she eats. For now, she should probably be avoiding anything high fiber or juices as they can definitely cause more diarrhea.
Have her try to bulk up with bananas (and potassium supplement pills), apple sauce, and rice. Have her also avoid milk products and anything fried.

Hugs to you- you sound like you're a wonderful daughter to your mum.

So very glad that your Mum is home...we all feel better in our own surroundings.

After surgery I was told to get plenty of protein to help with the healing process. I too did not have much appetite due to meds and found that eating small portions more often helped.

Be sure to stay in contact with the doc over any negative change in how she is doing or feeling. There may be something they can do to make her feel better.

I know you are taking good care of mum but take good care of you too!

    Hugs to you both,

So glad your mom is home. And that she is doing so well after surgery.
Please see if they can come up with some good ideas to stop your mom's diarrhea, I'm so sorry she's still suffering from that.

    Dear Sonia
How's your weekend? I hope you are doing well too.

The doctor gave her some anti diarrhea powder drink to take home but it didn't help much... and she is losing her usual appetite!

Thanks a lot for your support!

    Dear Anne
She was happy but she is not happy anymore because of the would pain and stomach pain. I wonder if that is from the wound, from the liver or really from her stomach. She just doesn't want to eat at all!

How's your weekend? I hope you have a good one!
    Love and hugs!

    Dear Gail
The doctor gave her some anti-biotic, anti diarrhea powder drink and pantaloc home... it seems they are not really helping her much. I just hope the pain, the uncomfortable feeling will go away soon.

DId I tell you I really like your profile picture. She looks so pretty here.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    Dear Lisa
Thank you very very much for your useful advice.

The swelling problem is gone... diarrhea is still there... plus no appetite. My mum loves food so much and when she was feeling well, she can eat a lot! After she came home, she didn't eat much and doesn't want to eat as well! I will make some fresh apple juice for her (just 100ml) and she can eat some rice as well. The colon surgeon asked her not to drink milk if possible, so she hasn't had any milk since she was dx last year in Oct. I don't know what kind of food can I prepare to arouse her appetite.

My attention to my mum has been upsetting my husband recently. Maybe I am a good daughter but I'm a terrible wife I guess. I try to spend some time with my husband today as this is Sunday here, but I'm worrying about my mum a lot!

How are you doing recently? I hope you are also doing well and managing your treatments well too.
    Love and hugs to you!

    Dear Marie,
I'm really really happy that she can come home within a week after her surgery. Although the hospital is only 5 minutes walk from home, I don't have to running back and forth between home and hospital. I haven't had any proper sleep since last Sunday... finally got a good night slept last night. And my mum loves to have bath at home. The first thing she did after she came home was having a bath and washed her hair.

The liver surgeon was so nice to call me after she left and did ask me to call him anytime if I need his help. He even left me his cell phone number for emergency. Just because he is so nice, I don't feel right calling him all the time.

I'm just hoping that her diarrhea will go away soon and she will feel better day after day. I'm really looking forward to going out walking with my mum again.

Love and hugs to you and your kitties.

Thank you so much for your support and sweet message. I really hope my mum could be like you one day.. with a normal CEA and handle everything so well. I hope when I have a child one day, she can help taking care of my baby too!

I hope your baby sitting time will go smoothly and enjoy the great time with your grandchild.

    Diarrhea
    Dora,
You might check out (google) the MD Anderson Poop Protocols - Bowel Management for Frequent Stooling is their name for the document. I have always found it most helpful. They have oher protocols which might be of help, for constapation and bowel training, but they don not seem to me to be useful for your mother's current situation.

I manage diarrhea by taking either Lomotil or Immodium every three hours (alternating between them) and a tablespoon or two of Metamucil just prior to or after every meal. I take tincture of opium (4 drops every 4 hours) in addition to my usual regiment, when thing get really bad. And of course, as much as can be done, I identify which foods I am tolerating well and which are trying to kill me by causing diarrhea, a raw behind and slowly bleeding to death out my bum. So far the Andesron Poop Protocols have kept me alive so I can focus on beating back the cancer within me.

Best wishes to your mom and you,

    Rick

    Dear Rick
Thank you very very much for your useful information. She also takes lomotil and metamucil, plus smecta and nutrilac... Sometimes, my mum and I both think she might be born with diarrhea!

I really appreciate your help and information. I am reading it while I'm writing this message to you.

Thanks a lot and best wishes to you and your family too!

    Dear Graci
Thank you very much for your kind words. (^^)

We talk to the colon surgeon who coordinate my mum's other doctors, the liver surgeon and the oncologist. She said she will discuss with all of them and see what will be her next step. She did mention that it will be better to have some more chemo treatments after she recovers from the surgery.

We have no idea (including the doctors) why my mum will have non-stop diarrhea! In fact, her diarrhea is getting better now (from 7 times down to 3, 4 times daily). It was also the reason why I missed her tumors at the beginning =( We thought to her, diarrhea is just normal, that's why we didn't insist to push her to have colonscopy!

I'm trying very hard to think of different dishes each day and hope she will be able to eat more. She is slowly, very slowly putting on weight in the last couple of days.

I really appreciate your response to my post all the time, they give me tremendous support during my hard time.

    Love D
