Can anyone explain to me the difference between Folfox 4, 5, or 6? What determines which
one is given?

i think the difference is the amount of oxi in the mix
    specifically

    folfox4 85mg/m2 and folfox 6 100mg/m2

i think most are offered folfox 6 these days.

they reduce the dose per the table based on sideeffects.

    your onc determines

    hope this helps,

    I read
the difference was in administration. They gave FOLFOX 4 this way:

Day 1: Oxaliplatin 85 mg/m² IV infusion in 250-500 mL D5W and leucovorin 200 mg/m² IV infusion in D5W both given over 120 minutes at the same time in separate bags using a Y-line, followed by 5-FU 400 mg/m² IV bolus given over 2-4 minutes, followed by 5-FU 600 mg/m² IV infusion in 500 mL D5W (recommended) as a 22-hour continuous infusion.

Day 2: Leucovorin 200 mg/m² IV infusion over 120 minutes, followed by 5-FU 400 mg/m² IV bolus given over 2-4 minutes, followed by 5-FU 600 mg/m² IV infusion in 500 mL D5W (recommended) as a 22-hour continuous infusion.

As opposed to FOLFOX 6 which is oxy and leucovorin given at same time day 1 with a bolus of 5FU and then remaining 5FU entire amount going home for 46 hours instead of going out split in half for 22 hours each time.

I would assume that FOLFOX 5 is something in between.

Thanks, Lori and Pete, for this info. Although my husband
has been fighting this stuff since 10-09, I am new to this
site and am glad for all the information you guys give.
First of 2010 he took 10 treatments of folfox 5, with so
many breaks because of complications. Now he is taking
folfox 6 and Erbotux, seems to be handling it better. But it is also at 60% dose. So wasn't sure of the difference.
Lori, hope you get good news on the 31st.

Sorry to hear that your husband has colon cancer. When was he diagnosed? Is this his
first round of chemo? John seems to be doing so much better this round of chemo than
he did the first round in 2010. He had so many problems, several surgeries and numerous
hospital stays last year. So I am kind of waiting for the other foot to drop right now.
Maybe the chemo is really working? We will know when they do the scans 1/2 way through.
I have not known about this site very long, but there is a lot of great information on it.
Wish I had know about it last year, I wouldn't have felt so alone.
    Hope your husband does well.
