When is Dress in Blue Day?

It is celebrated on the first Friday of March.  In 2011, Dress in Blue Day is Friday, March 4th.

What is Dress in Blue Day?

The purpose of Dress in Blue Day is to promote awareness about colon cancer and encourage people to get their colon checked.

Why do we need to raise awareness of colon cancer?

Because:

Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.
Approximately 150,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer each year.
Colon cancer often has no symptoms at all until it's at an advanced stage.
Colon cancer is 80% preventable when detected early.
You can reduce your risk through regular screenings.
Beginning at age 50 (or earlier if you have a family history), everyone should get their colon checked.
Learn how you can get involved and make a difference!

Who can I contact if I have more questions?

That is great to know. You always see the pink for breast cancer but I was not aware of the blue day...being recently diagnosed on January 8, 2011, this has impacted my family and friends greatly. I will make sure to mark my calendar and make sure my girls and all associated with me will have on blue on March 4th!

March is also Colon Cancer Month. I plan on going down to a city commission meeting this month to ask them to declare Santa Cruz recognizes Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month by proclamation, I also plan to hand them a bit of literature about colon cancer screening etc. (they're almost all over 50)I believe that the newspaper will run an article on it with encouragement to all who are 50 to get colonoscopies (personally I think 40). Maybe it can save a life or two. I urge you not to just wear blue the first Friday of the Month, but also to get your city councils to give a proclamation declaring March the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
