Finished with Radiation! Last tuesday was my last day. It still really hurts to eat, it feels like my tongue is ripping apart, especially when I yawn. Horrible, but soon it will be better! Looking forward to pain free days. Visited with my oncologist at UCSF have to see him every two months for now, PET scan in four months and a Thyroid check to make sure the radiation hasn't destroyed. I'm sure you all know the drill! Big hugs and thanks for all your support and advice. I wouldn't have been able to handle it as well as I did without all of you. Shelly

    Last radiation
Awesome! We are at about the same stage of treatment as you are. As bad as you must be feeling, it will be hard to be patient while the healing begins. Our Radiation Oncologist told us Buzz would feel 20% better two weeks after the end of radiation. Hope it goes faster for you!

    Milestone!
Glad you're done Shelly, nice to not have to make those daily trips. As I'm sure you know, you'll still be "radiating" for a time, so go easy on the eating. Pain will be lessening soon, and now you can begin to heal.

    best, Hal

    Hi Shelly
You made it and now comes the healing part, someday you will look back at all this as just a bad dream.

All the best to you as you get better each day

    Ring the Bell!
Glad to hear that you're done! Now on for the fun part - recovery. I think sneezing was more painful than yawning for me.

    Happy for you!
It is such a relief when they quit zapping you. Now just get thru the couple weeks of continued cooking time and get on to the healing! I hope it goes well and you bounce back quickly!!

    Blessings,

    Sweet

    Congratulations!
You've passed a major milestone. As Dennis and others have mentioned, you're still "cooking" and will be for a few weeks, so don't be impatient.
Pretty soon you'll be looking at this in the rearview mirror.

    Let the Recovery Commence!!
Like the others, glad you're out of the oven.

I remember happily one day a while back. I sneezed, then realized it didn't hurt a bit. You're on your way there.

I felt the same one and two weeks out
    Shelly,

I felt just as you did one and two weeks post treatment. Now 6 weeks post treatment I am feeling better now as my tongue was so sore your description was right on target. I also have pain when I yawn and look forward to pain free days.

As many have said and I have to remind myself 'this too shall pass.'
As my friend likes to tell me chin up little soldier. Its corny but helps to know we all share the same experience and have others to communicate with who have shared in our pain, from diagnosis, through treatment and now recovery.

Here's to us both being cancer free when we have our post treatment scans.

Been there, done that, didn't like it either. So glad to hear you finished! Now you can start ticking off the days post treatment. I look forward to when that is a really big number of days. Glad to have you join us on this side.

I am not so sure Friedrich Nietzsche would have been so quick to say whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, if he had been in the middle of radiation therapy. It sure had me wondering. That was tough stuff you went through.

    yea!!!!
Congratulations! You have survived treatment...now you just have to recover from it! The way I looked at it, which made it not feel quite so frustrating was that if you had surgery, you would have several weeks of healing before you would begin feeling better. It is just the same after radiation. It will take a few weeks before you will feel more normal, but it should happen before you even know it! I wish you a speedy recovery, less pain very very soon, a healthy thyroid, and clean scans! Hugs! I have been praying for you every day and thinking about you all the time! I am so happy to hear that you still have your happiness post treatment! Keep up those good spirits.
I am doing very well, my main problem is with my obturator and the sores it keeps giving me. I am able to eat most things...as long as it doesn't have sharp edges or if it isn't too spicy...any spice and my mouth gets very angry! Huge Hugs!

    Thanks again everyone!
Thanks again everyone! Just waiting for the swelling to subside and pain to go away, hopefully soon. Doc says the chance of it coming back are slim to none, hope he's right. Thank you all so much! Love to you all and best wishes, Shelly

    Crossing the finish line!!
Congratulations!! It is a milestone for sure. Recovery is different for everyone, so be prepared for anything; but remember mental attitude is huge through this next phase too. I think for Mark, when taste came back a little, he really started to move in his recovery. One day at a time...journey on,

    Done Cookin'
Congratulations, Shelly. It sure feels good to be done with the giant microwave, doesn't it? Every time I climbed on that table, I kept remembering the ants that I cooked with a magnifying glass when I was a kid. Only this time, I was playing the part of the ant. Best of luck with the healing process. Be well.
