Went from 6.2 to 5.3 ..........YAY!!!!! ALMOST normal! Husband says that I NEVER been normal...LOL... I know right??? I also found out my Vit D level is 5. That is horrible..VERY low.... I think normal range is around 32. Soooooo.... Onc called in script for some. I called drug store cause I want D-3 not D-2... they said that don't really matter and I said to me it does and I don't want D-2....from what a lot of you have said it is a waste of time...right? or not?? Anyway... I am just SOOOOO excited that CEA did not go up...cause we all know what that would have meant. I would have been happy for it to stay the same but to go down was a blessing in disguise!!! Merry Christmas to me!!! I just wanted to share that with ya'll. I am off to finish Christmas shopping..... and yes sir... I'll be a singing xmas tunes to Craigs CD while drivin down the road in my Maro'... Later!

So glad to hear your CEA is going down!! Mine is actually going down again too- still way up there, but heading in the right direction again (had been up to 192 3 weeks ago after being off chemo for those 2 extra wks & after one round back on chemo, it dropped down to 156 last week).

About the vitamin D- wow- 5 is very low! My level was a 13 when I first had mine tested. 32 is the minimum for "normal", but I have read optimal levels are actually between 50-70. It can be harmful if the level gets over 100, but that is unlikely to happen. Keep getting the level checked on a regular basis to make sure the supplements are working. The supplements pills didn't work for me when I first started supplementing & it wasn't until I switched to the spray form that the levels finally came up to 32 the first month, then to just over 50 two months after that. You don't need a prescription for vitamin D- just make sure you get the D-3 and not D-2 (most D supplements now are all D-3, but you have to check). I can't believe the pharmacy told you it didn't matter! It sure does!
I have read that a low vitamin D level can even contribute to getting the common cold and flu more often and severely (according to Dr. Mercola- check out his website- he has lots to say on all health topics and really seems to know his stuff. His website is also where I order my spray vitamin D, spray vitamin B, and spray multivitamin).

Take care, Jennie & have a Merry Christmas!

    Great news about the CEA
Great news about the CEA dropping!

Re the vitamin D - some people (me among them) don't absorb the D2, which is in the prescriptions. 2 years of taking 50,000 iu twice a week, plus 2,000 iu/day of D3 brought me from 9 to 29, where I stayed for the past 1 1/2 years.

D3 works much more quickly, so if you choose to avoid the D2, and take the high doses in the D3, get rechecked in about a month. It took 26 days for me to go from 29 to 50. My dr told me to take 20,000iu/day for 2 weeks, and then 8,000 iu/day for 2 weeks. I now take 5,000 iu/day to see if that will maintain my level.

You might want to call Integrative Medicine at MSKCC to see if someone can advise you over the phone on an approach to raising your D levels. Phone: 646-888-0800

WoW!! Thank you guys so much!!!
Just got back from shopping.... It's a madhouse out there but I love it!!! I spoke to the Pharmacist about the D script. Onc gave me script 50,000 iu 1xweekly. Dude at pharmacy said it is D2 and the ONLY difference is absorbtion time. and he said its like the D2 takes an hour longer to absorb than the D3. NO BIG DEAL he said. I told him about what several of you have experienced and he said he has never had any complaints EVER concerning the inability to raise levels with D2...and quickly at those amounts. He said since my level was so low the Onc put me on that high dose for 3 months and then will drop it when levels reach normal. He said that high dosage DOES NOT COME in D3. So.... I will take those 4 little pills this month...which will take me to my appt with naturopath doc....Pharmacist said levels should show sunstancial increase within this month...OK..we will see who knows what. Thanks again to you all for your input and well wishes. Sonia..did you get yours back yet???? Let us know. Merry Christmas to you all!!

I was on 2 of those a week
    Jennie,
I was on 2 of those 50,000 iu/week for 2 years, and about to be moved to 3/week, and rechecked in 6 months, when I started working with the integrative med specialist at MSK. I've heard of others who've had problems with the D2 as well, tho it does work for many.

As mentioned in my previous post, on D3, we normalized my level in 26 days; something we couldn't do on extreme doses of D2 in 2 years. My PCP knows that I've taken this out of her hands, and she's very pleased with the results.

I'm glad you're seeing a naturopath who can perhaps guide you with the D3.

    All the best,

    Alice

OTC higher dose D3 pills and liquid
"He said that high dosage DOES NOT COME in D3."

The pharmacist doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. Here's a few:
    Bio-Tech Pharmacal, D-3-50 (50,000 IU cholecalciferol) 100ct
Vitamin D3 Extreme™ (50000 IU, 24 capsules) by ProHealth, Inc.

10,000 iu per pill brands include:
NSI, Healthy Origins, Maximum D3, Superior Source microlingual, Delta D3, Carlson, Pure Encapsulations, and many more. Ditto 5000 iu pills.

In some countries, refractory vitamin D deficiency can still be dealt with liquid formulations, in a vegetable oil carrier cheapest, containing 100,000 iu D3 per mL, or per gram.

If anyone sees a cheap, US liquid source for high potency D3 under a liter, I'm interested to hear it.

    D2 vs D3
D2 is ergocalciferol, an old industrial form, with poor absorption or phamacokinetics and the historical toxicity problems at less high doses. D3 is cholecalciferol, the form made by our human bodies, is cited for a superior therapeutic index by many researchers.
