QUESTION ABOUT USING THE REST ROOM

Just wondering if it is normal to still being having abnormal poops. I mean I still have not really gone to the restroom where it was just one big normal piece. Usually a few small pieces and please forgive me for using the word poop or even asking this question but who else better to ask than people going through the same thing. I'm thinking it must be normal after the colon surgery and the fact that I am still doing chemo but maybe I am wrong...

Thanks,
Bobby

Poop, poop, poop. This colorectal cancer is a Chitty disease! I think that most of us have the experience of our intestines not working the same as before surgery. They just don't like to be man-handled let alone cut and sewn. I have a colostomy and hernia and adhesions so I'm probably not the best person to respond to what it's suppose to be like. But, I do know that I have a terrible time with constipation from chemo which really puts my system into a tailspin. You are not alone in having "not normal" poops.

    POOP
Ya....... you can say poop..pooopy...runs...whatever. I have had the poops for about 18 months...ever since surgery last year.... I think I have pretty well taken everything from pills to shots for it. It has been "controlled" over the months but far far from "normal" I was taking 4-6 Immodium every day to dry things up...and then I would just FART...yes, you can say that too! Fart is even too kind of a word to describe the poisen coming out of my butt! Chemo farts are worse than dog farts..LOL! Boy....am I ever paying my husband back for all his MAN farts. Anyway, something real strange happened last week. When I woke up the urgency to do my first morning poop...gone...so I didn't take my normal Immodium pill. Many hours passed...still no poop. So whats the first thing I think...Maybe I got a blockage....is this what happens??? Just no poop??? Finally later in the day.... A familiar sensation came over me...one I had not felt in a long time.... That "I gotta have a BM....a REAL BM!!! Well, wave your magic wand cause lo and behold... a TURD was born..ya you can say that too! I don't mean to be gross here but I was soooooo happy. It was such a "normal" feeling. It was my only BM that day and by the end of the day I was asking myself.."Why ain't I pooping..whats wrong with me???" I mean I usually go 10 times a day. Then I realized...wow..this is not wrong...this IS normal!.... Been so long I forgot what normal was. I don't know why all the sudden my pooping changed...but since that day.. I have had 1 (ya, just 1) NORMAL bowel movement per day... NO more Immodium. It feels great. God have I missed THIS part of normal!!!!! Don't know how long it will last but dang has my toilet paper usage gone down!!!! Anyway... just another day in the neighborhood....you take care!

Well...I'm wondering the same thing myself. I had my iliostomy refersed, it will be 2 week this Friday and I go back and forth from crazy uncontrollable diarrhea to kind of normal BM. But even with those it's like my body forgets to go all at the same time, and it takes me 4 or 5 times to go. And that is with some urgency too. I think I will always have to be close to a restroom, or at least know where one is at all times if I ever leave my house.

    OK Bobby
Consider this an update as just as I hit the send button on my message to you, the constipation stopped and the diarrhea started. How's that for normal poops? UGH Guess I shouldn't gripe about constipation anymore.

    what's normal anyhow?
When I'm asked if my BMs are normal, I say for me, yes, for you, no. I also don't have one single "normal" stool, it usually comes in multiples throughout the day, I just keep an eye on the total volume to be sure I seem to be emptying things out. I have been having particular issues with size and pain involved, too, so that doesn't help. I think as long as the total volume in a day appears to be appropriate for the amount of food you are taking in in a day, you are good to go!

want to sit on the john
Hell, I just want to sit on the john and not have to kneel in front of it to do a bag dump.

    8.2 days to go.

    I was still having poop
I was still having poop problems a year post-op. An Integrative Medicine MD recommended that I take GI Revive daily for 30 days. It's a powder or capsules that contain herbals that help regenerate the mucosal lining of your gut. I did this in conjunction with 40 billion cells of pro-biotics daily. Since then, I've been pooping normally. And since I was resected in 3 places, this is a major accomplishment. (I still take pro-biotics. You want a combination of Bifidus and Lactobacillus.)

See if there is an Integrative Med specialist associated with your oncology group.

Good luck - it's a long, hard road.

    It's the pits
    Bobby,

I've had IBS for many years, so I've always had issues, but since my colon resection it's been the pits. We've finally gotten me what helps the most: Miralax twice a day, plus a probiotic once a day. I still have exteme difficulty and have been hospitalized numerous times for pain and blockages.

Hope your system straightens out better than mine has.

    *hugs*

    Normal
Mine aren't normal. Mine are usually on the runner side and go about 10 times a day, although mostly lucky because it happens about 9 p.m. so usually doesn't keep me from doing things. Remember you are on the colorectal board, we say anything here :) If you were modest before you probably got over that real fast.

    New Normal
    Bobby,

You just have to get used to the new normal,I'm like Kim. Do my business about ten times a day, and the consitency varies greatly. I think hydration and diet are key here. My biggest problem is staying hydrated, since I have a colostomy. I'm hoping you have an AHA moment like Jennie and just realize things are back to your old regular normal.

    Hi Bobby! Thought I would
Hi Bobby! Thought I would share what has been working for Jack. He takes a colace a peri-colace a multivitamin every day. Then if things are slowing down (constipation) he'll take a laxative every other day. He gets constipation with chemo more than diarrhea, but if the diarrhea hits he'll do 1/2 Immodium and it slows things down. (he took 2 the first time and couldn't go for DAYS, then 1 was still too much)
His resection was in August and his chemo started in October.
It's a trial and error for sure, hope there is something here that helps you!
    Happy gobble day!

I get excited when I have a normal Poop
How is that for pathetic, I am 2 years NED, and I get so excited when I can take a poop and its a normal one. I havent had alot of problems with not being able to go its the always having to go that kills me. I swear sometimes I can barely finish a dinner and I have to run to the bathroom, not that its the runs all the time its just I have to get it out. And the worst for me is, when I go I want to go all the way, not go a little, wipe, get up, leave the bathroom, get a few steps away and Bam I got to run back to go a little more, wipe, get up, oh and I do wash my hands forgot that part, leave the bathroom and BAM again, right back to the bathroom, it really sucks when I am at work. I used to be really embarrassed but I am at the point now, if I gotta go, I gotta go, its either that or wear a diaper and well have done that already, didnt like it much. So when I can go to the potty and be finished all in one trip, I get excited, crazy huh?

    HUGS
