My mother has started the PARPs yesterday and they warned her about nausea..only recommended 2 drugs: ativan which knocks her out and something else that makes her constipated that she won't take. any other suggestions?

    All the anti-nausea drugs
All the anti-nausea drugs tend to make me drowsy but the ones that work best are Zofran (aldancetron is the generic name) and good old Phenegran suppositories, if I am so nauseated I cannot swallow a pill or keep down a sip of water.

    I agree
I don't like taking ANY drugs. I hate being nausea even more. Zofran works for me too.

Does your mother get anti-nausea as pre-meds before trtmt?
    Lisa,
I have been on Zofran, Aloxi, Emend and Reglan. One of my worse side effects over all was constipation. All of these meds worked for me and the only one that did not cause constipation was the Reglan. My doctors recommended that one after I had bowel surgery because I had complications getting back to having any kind of a bm on my own. I always received these prior to the chemo treatment and have them at home if I need them later. The one that can work the best at home is Zofran. You can get it in a pill form that disolves under your tounge and works quickly. I know a lot of the ladies also use MiraLAX for constipation but I think it may take a couple of days to start working (not sure). After my bowel surgery, I saw a gastroenteroligist and he recommended an organic tea called "Smooth Move" for the constipation. This is senna tea and you can get this in any health food store. I was thrilled! It works within 4 to 6 hours but it took a while to figure the strenghth I needed. Becareful with the strength if you use it. I litterally lived on this stuff for months and no longer need it now. You can use this everyday of your life without causing damage like other laxatives if used long term because it's organic. As far as the ativan, I only received that as a sleeping pill when I'm in the hospital and never heard of it as an anti-nausea med. Hope this helps you and your mom.

    Nausea~
I use several things; starting with Zofran (dissolves on the tongue), Phenergan, and also Club Soda and Ginger Tea.

Ginger Tea seems quite effective~ sometimes~~~ it's touch and go on which one works when.

Also... smoking marijuana works tremendously for nausea and appetite~ hope I don't offend anyone by mentioning that.

    Hang in there~~

I used to take the ativan
I used to take the ativan during my treatment because it would knock me out and it will help me not feel nauseous during the actual treatment. Other times I would take Zofran and that helped me.

    Maybe worth a try?
I've read along the way that different forms of peppermint may help with nausea.
I don't know if it really works, but I did have some peppermint candies on hand for my mom in case she felt a little queasy.

Aromatherapy with peppermint oil is supposed to help, along with peppermint teas.
