    I haven't been told "specifically" not to drink. My onc today touched on the negative effects of more than 4 drinks/week with regard to reoccurence, not treatment. And, it seems like we hear all the time how good a 'glass of red' is for the prevention of BC... what about the PREVENTION OF NERVES before TXs??

    Can't wait to hear the opinions of the other sisters -- experience is key here!

    My Onc said absolutely not along with the usual no raw foods, no spicy foods and no food buffets. I would really love a salad :) Hugs

    My oncologist
    said I could have a half-glass of wine now and again, but advised against more than that.

    I don't drink much anyway, but sometimes I do drink a WHOLE glass of wine ;-O I figure since I dring so seldom (problably 1 drink every 1-2 weeks) I can splurge and finish the whole glass when I do!

    Didn't have the stomach to drink during treatment
    But I'm done now--and I do love my wine. There are so many conflicting reports about alcohol--and I know it's probably best to obstain, but I think many factors cause breast cancer (just read an article about air pollution from cars being linked to bc). Just my opinion, but I really don't think Chardonnay caused my bc. It's a personal choice and many of us did not indulge before bc, but I think I'll still have a wine (or two) when I feel like it. Everyone has to be within their comfort level.

    Everything in Moderation
    I was never told not to drink (also never asked!). My philosophy is everything in moderation. I don't think there is any one thing that causes bc but it's sort of like The Perfect Storm. Lots of things come together. For all we know, next year some study may say that chocolate causes bc!!!!Or maybe drinking a glass of wine prevents a recurrance. Who knows....

    I was never told not to drink and do enjoy a glass of wine now and then. All things in moderation.

    One of the information papers I received when I started chemo said NO alcohol. Also NO salad bars, No raw sushi or other meats. BC is NO Fun!

    My sister, a physician, has emailed me many studies about the correlation between alcohol and recurrence. They are pretty convincing.

    I never was a drinker though, so it has been easy for me to give up (almost). One drink and my face and nose get beet red and I feel sick. I think I now drink about 2-3 drinks a year and don't ask me why. Even if I loved it, I would probably shy away from it now though.

    Drinking the good stuff
    I was told that drinking wine, beer, or hard liqure should be avoided while on chemo. I was lucky I could drink anything other than water while on chemo.

    I have never been a drinker
    I was always the one voted to be the desinated driver. I would rather have a glass of iced tea.

    What I know about drinking and smoking
    As it turns out drinking and smoking cigs are two of the worst things Women can do. Both of these things contribute to raising our estrogen levels something it does not do to men. Why it has turned out to be worse for women to do than men, but not to say some men aren't affected by it.
    I have been smoking since 5 years old and drinking since 11 and people ask me all the time if I think that those things contributed to my cancer. The answer is YES...
    Though I was a smoking athlete I know in my soul that doing these things as much as I did had an affect on this body of mine considering I am very sensative to everything I put in it. Most women get by fine but some of us are sensative so who knows what can affect us.
    Do I drink today and smoke? I drink yes and I quit smoking cigs as a gift to myself after surviving treatments. I was actually told getting off the pain meds and smoking medicinal greens was probably a good thing since there aren't the side affects that I was getting from the perscription meds and this was talked about at the cancer clinic.
    I like to drink a few drinks but drink little compared to what I have in the past because the body just doesn't allow it making me extremely ill. That isn't such a bad thing though I have found.

    On your diagnosis, treatment, and Rx...and I'm sure the ACS folks would put that disclaimer out there, too! Best bet is to ask your doc(s). My surgeon recently spoke as part of a lecture series @ the hospital, and this was a major topic, w/many questions about it from the audience. HER take is that moderation is key, that the conflicting info (Red wine is good for you! Antioxidants! vs Don't drink if you've had breast cancer!) is confusing to everyone, not just Ca survivors, and she also reminded us that wine glasses have grown quite a bit over the years. 4oz of wine = 1oz of hard liquor = 8oz of beer. It's all equal, and alcohol is alcohol, so no one is better/worse than the other. But pour out 4oz of wine and you'll see how little it is--so keep that in mind if you do drink!

    I agree with Miss Murphy 100%. I have never been told to not drink alcohol. But like everthing else too much of anything that produces estrogen (which is things we eat and drink everyday) must be consumed in moderation. I remember years ago there was a study saying caffeine was associated to bc just as they say alcohol is now. That study has seemed to have disappeared???

    I wasn't specifically told not to drink. I do like my beer but it gave me such bad heartburn that I didn't have any during chemo. I might have had a glass or 2 of wine the entire time. My main thing was the heartburn -pretty much ANYthing I drank except for milk & water gave me severe heartburn, i didn't even have pop. We went out on my birthday, a local bar was having a breast cancer awareness fundraiser, and all of our friends met us there. I had 2 vodka & orange juices & they were delicious!
    I think if your Dr hasn't told you to avoid, and you do so in moderation, then why not? I don't know about getting trashed though - I'm sure a hangover while on chemo has got to be worse than any regular hangover!

    My oncologist said I could. I haven't started chemo yet so I'm sure it will stop then! Just wanted others opinions!

    Well that changes everything lol! Enjoy! We had a party the weekend before I started chemo with our best friends. I didn't get drunk, but I did have a few beers. It was quite entertaining to watch everyone else over-indulge though! Best of luck to you ;)
