Hubby brought me to the ER yesterday afternoon with a fever of 102. By the time they checked it, it was 103! I have a small abscess, but I can hardly believe it could cause such a high fever. I've been taking 2 antibiotics for the tooth abscess, but still got this fever. My question for you guys is, have any of you ever had an issue with a fever being CAUSED by antibiotics? Every time they give me the IV antibiotic (vancomycin) my fever spikes. I'm going to ask the Dr. about it when I see him, but I was wondering what y'all thought.

These temperature swings are awful! When the fever starts climbing I get chills so bad my teeth chatter. Then they give me Tylenol or Motrin & it starts dropping so I start feeling like a radiator on high. The Dr. Is saying he expects me to be here for a couple of days at least. I just want to go home. They have me on 4 different antibiotics at this point. Please pray this thing gets better so I can go home.

Blessings,

Jenn

    Oh Jenn, that sucks. You
Oh Jenn, that sucks. You are definitely in my prayers. Vancomycin can cause fever and chills, but it is an important antibiotic when you have a serious infection. I hope you begin to get better quickly!

Here is a list of vancomycin common adverse effects from epocrates:
    Common Reactions
    red-man syndrome (rapid IV)
    hypotension (rapid IV)
    fever
    nausea
    chills
    eosinophilia
    rash
    urticaria
    phlebitis
    tinnitus
    dizziness/vertigo
    elevated BUN, Cr

    Hi, Jenn
I was in the hospital for five days after my last (6th) chemo treatment of TAC back in May. My fever kept spiking and then going down. I was on IV Vancomycin and Leviquan (sp?). Apparently I had some type of infection in my body, but with bloodwork 2x/day for five days, they never found the source. Also, my white count was down to nothing, so they kept waiting for it to get up to a safe range. In 5 days, my fever was gone and my counts were at a safe level for them to release me.

I hope your counts get normal and the fever goes away soon. As soon as it does, you'll feel so much better. Unfortunately, when you're going through this, the hospital is the place you need to be. They didn't want to send me home too soon and then have to re-admit me if my fever spiked again.

My prayers and positive energy are with you. Hang in there--this will pass.

    Hugs, Renee

    So sorry Jenn
If the tooth isn't causing an infection then what is. It has to be something, they need to find the cause. That darn tooth needs to come out. Tell doc to knock you out and pull that sucker.
    Hang in there Jenn.

    Jenn,
Just to let you know we are all thinking of you and praying you'll be fine. I know you will be, it just takes alittle time. Think positive and you'll be home soon. I know how you feel...I don't think many of us like being in hospitals either. But with the wonderful, dedicated nurses they will have you better soon

    Update
My fever is still doing the yoyo thing, but at this point, if they keep giving me Tylenol or Motrin on a regular basis it stays at or close to normal. It hit 103.4 yesterday evening. Coming down off a fever that high is almost as bad as having it! But, I generally feel okay if they keep the analgesics coming. They did another CT scan to make sure the abscess is fully drained. The Dr. said this morning that I might get to go home tomorrow. I sure hope so. My counts are fine, so that's one piece of good news.

Jenn .. A very smart RN told me years ago
that when I have a fever, flu causing my body temperture to rise .. Always, always take advil to fight the fever within my body. It's difficult to take advil along with the many other drugs given to us WARRIORS during our chemo therapy or radiation, we can get confused and grown tired of popping pills all day long ... Fever equals advil - saves your liver and kidney from working so hard during high fevers.

Sorry that you ended up in the ER .. the wait alone to be seen by a doctor would drive anyone insane. Take care and feel better...:0-)
