Ok. Skeezie wants to be Activities Chairman. Does anyone who joins want to say why they are wimps? Mine started when I was younger than five. I didn't want the shot and hid behind the door! They bribed me to come out with candy. I don't even remember this but it's lingering back in my subconscience. Um, I wonder if that is why chocolate is comfort food. naw, I'm pretty sure it wasn't chocolate but a sucker. I've never liked needles and that is why having the chemo was so hard for me but I didn't want the port because I hated surgery more. So I guess I wasn't a wimp during treatment because I knew it had to be done.

    The only time needles bother
The only time needles bother me is when used in mouth! I have bitten dentists more than once - even as an adult if they hurt me too bad.

The first time I remember anything to do with dentists was when I was 6 and for some reason - don't remeber why - they were going to do something and gave me novacaine. This was back in 1952 at a VERY small USAF base in France - we only got a Dr. there about once a month. Well - it didn't work so they gave me another shot in fact several more and still did nothing. By then everybody was getting mad at me and saying that it had worked and it was numb so I couldn't possibly feel anything - BUT I DID! Thankfully, the Corpsman who was there had thought that there really was something going on that wasn't right - so he had injected himself and it hadn't worked. So they finally believed me then and decided to wait til another batch of meds could be sent down from the bigger base.

Needles used for shots or blood draws don't bother me at all - just keep them away fropm my mouth!

    Big Wimp checking in....
Mine also started in the doc's office as a little kid with shots. There were many tears and "don't touch me's". Then came the dentist with that horrible needle and the slow, old fashioned drill...remember you ladies that are a little older?

I actually went to dental school and became a Dental Assistant and loved it, especially the surgery. But then something happened...I had a panic attack in the chair and lydocaine no longer numbed me. A dentist told me I needed to find a dentist that would give me IV Sedation because putting that crown in was like surgery without anesthetic. Well I found a wonderful dentist I have gone to for 25 years and for all dental work I have IV Sedation and I get Nitris Oxide for cleaning. Oh yeah, I only worked for a dentist for a short time because I got divorced, had a baby and needed to make more money than a dentist paid back then.

I was very stoic when I gave birth and never said a word in labor and when it came to bc last year and 5 years ago for biopsy I only wanted a surgical biopsy because that is also a lumpectomy and maybd that's all that's needed. Well last year it didn't work and I went the full boat including a single, simple mastectomy. And can you believe it? All my friends thought I wa this brave "trooper". But you have no choice, you gotta do what you gotta do...BUT I took my Ativan, even on surgery days (with doc's permission), I surprised myself too. I could never understand how people go thru this.

I'm still a wimp, still take an Ativan on doc and dentist days....would never have considered reconstruction. Enougy surgery already. Even if I was in my 30's I wouldn't have done it. I marvel at all the ladies here that do it.

I think we wimps just have a low tolerence for pain and I am a coward at heart!

Shuttering in my shoes at needles...Judy :-)

    Silly me...
I saw the title "Wimpy Club", and immediately thought ... "Oh swell, now that I've decided to limit red meat!" (a fan club for that buddy of Popeye who ate burgers all the time).

I cannot say I'm a wimp about most things. My attitude has always been "get in, get it done, get on with life". However, I don't like any of it, and would be much happier not having to go through all this. Hugs to you all. Gracie

    One question:
What sort of activities would a wimpy club participate in?

I guess the Hot Air balloon party in the neighborhood here in Holland is out?

I don't want to speak for everyone. A wimp could be wimpy about needles but love to go up in balloons. I think everyone is wimpy about different things.

    Did you hear this one?

A caller to a grocery store asked, "Do you have Olive Oil in a bottle?"
    The clerk answers, "Yes."
The caller responds, "Then you better let her out cause you're making Popeye mad."

    dentists and deep water
Try to avoid those. Oh, don't like rodents. Or big bugs. Otherwise, I'd say I'm brave enough.

    Needles?-------aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhh!
My mother's favorite story she tells on me is when I was little, our gp came up to her in the street. Those were the days when the doctor gave the shots. As an allergic kid, I had my fill of those, and when I saw him, according to her, I ran behind her, clung to her leg like a monkey, and cried!

Not quite that bad now, but still, don't like needles...in the jaw, arm, butt....anywhere!

    Then in that case -
when put that way I have to add - BIG BOATS - they are going to sink even when tied to the pier IF I'm on them! Hubby spent 20 years in the Navy and him being on the carriers never bothered me - I even sent to Boys to Hawaii so they could come back with him on the Tiger Cruise at the end of Desert Storm/his last cruise. I've been on a couple of different carriers when they were tied to the pier but I was paniced the whole time I was on them - they were going to sink. When I was little (6) we went from NY to France (Daddy was already there so it was Mom, her Mom, my year old brother and me) on the USS United States. The first day out, there was a lifeboat drill. Well my 6 y/o mind knew that life boats meant the boat was sinking and 'drill' meant Daddy taking his airmen to the parade grounds and marching them around - those to things do not go together. Also they had taken the extra adult sized life jackets out of our statetoom and not put any kid sized ones in. Then as couple of days later we were going to eat, well I forgot my doll so Mom let me run back to the stateroom to get her. When I came out the watertight door was closed for a test but I was already set on the idea the boat was going to sink. When they got it back open - there was a time delay before it could be reopened. When it reopened the Steward. Mom and Nannie found me sitting in front of our door talking to Doll and telling her it was going to be OK. They had to close the door so that the boat wouldn't sink and didn't have time to get us (Doll and I) out if they were going to save ll the big people. It was years before Mom ever realized how bad it was for me. I do love boats and boating - just not BIG boats - if it's big enough I can't see out it's going to sink.

    Ahoy, matey!
How about a luxury cruise ship? Balcony cabin? Is that ok?

I went from a cruise ship that had 2200 plus guests, to a 4-person little rowboat in Capri to fit into the Blue Grotto...WHEW! There, we had to wait for the wave to go thru the opening so that the boatman could PULL us thru the opening!!!

I have a few--but my main ones are
that I'm phobic about the dentist. I have to take Valium even for a simple filling. I interviewed 5 dentists before I picked my current one, making sure he was very gentle, kind and caring. I think this stems from having a tooth pulled at age 5, but only told about it when I got into the chair. Had to be held down while screaming. So scary!

My other main one is scorpions! I live in AZ and they terrify me. When we moved into our current house, there were many gaps in door frames, windows, etc. We had 13 scorpions in the house that first summer. I slept with the sheet over my head. I told my husband I was moving to a hotel if he didn't fix the problem. The next weekend, he sealed up every window, re-hung doors, even took off switchplates and vent covers and sealed them. It took him all weekend, but (knock on wood) we haven't had a scorpion in 4 years! I love that man!

We have scorpions here too. We live in a subdivision so don't have a lot but we've had a couple in the last two years. At one time we had two cats and they were mousers and also went after scorpions.

Are wimps and phobic the same thing? I have a fear of riding in elevators by myself~ for no apparent reason. If, when we travel, we can't get a 1st or 2nd floor hotel room, and Reggie isn't there to leave the room with me ( he may be out golfing or something!) I have been known to push the elevator button a dozen times until it opens with people in it, or call the front-desk and have them send someone up to ride down with me! Even one floor! I try and try and try to talk myself into getting on the elevator, but when the Ding!happens, the door opens and no one is in it...I cannot, cannot will not get in! I have been known to walk up /down more than 20 floors . I need help! LOL

Gimme me a dentist or a hundred shots in the arm, butt any day!

Nope - No Way - No How!
A cruise ship is a big boat and it will sink. The United States was the biggest, fastest luxury liner plying the route from NYC to Europe when we were on it and had an outside stateroom so we had a port hole to see out. The adult who is capable of logically thinking - sometimes (LOL) - knows that the chances of it sinking are very slim but the 6 y/o is still there and 'knows' it's going to sink. My fear only affects me - Hubby spent years on an aircraft carrier - I put our Sons (12 and 13 at the time) on a plane in FL going to
Hawaii so they could come back on the Tiger Cruise from Pearl Harbor to San Diego with their Dad on his last cruise - I met them in San Diego. I would never try to talk somneone out of going on a cruise but I'm 'not about to'. The only cruise I might be able to do would be an Inside Passage to Alaska IF I had an outside stateroom on the land side and if the shore could be seen the entire voyage. If something as big and sturdy as an aircraft carrier is going to sink while tied to the pier - a cruise boat will too as far as I'm concerned. 4 person rowboat would not be a problem for me the big boat is.

    We're all so different.

    Oh Dear!
I can see planning activities for the Wimpy Club is going to be a real challenge...not only are we admitted Wimps but it seems it spreads beyond medical/dental stuff as well. I don't like high places or closed in places (don't even mention MRI to me), don't mind mice, but steer clear of snakes (don't hate'em just want them to live not near me)and not fond of spiders!

I'm thinking maybe we should start out with something easy that I think we all really like...we should continue to contemplate our first activity sitting in front of our computers...I know we all like to do that.

    Whatcha think?

Spiders. Snakes. Flying. HEIGHT. The dentist - natural because the first one I went to was the most sadistic b*st**d I've ever met. I take valium & nitreous for dental work now, used to have to go completely out, so I guess I'm doing better.

Funny how we can be so stong in so many ways and then just fall apart at something nonsensical.

I guess as long as the planned activity isn't taking an elevator up to the top floor to have our teeth cleaned by a sadist of a dentist who has decorated his walls to look like the insect/arachnid wing of a museum of natural history, we'll be just fine!

wimpy only with dentists and mri machines!
horrible dentist experiences when i was little - dentist did not believe in novocaine, could hear screaming and crying from behind the door. also found out i was claustrophobic the first time i went for an mri.

other than that, not much of a wimp! which is a good thing because i do live by myself ;)
