severe hiccups

Hi guys...Lyle is still in the hospital and I have a couple of questions for those of you who have already gone where we are. Lyle has severe hiccups that come and go...but they are so strong that they cause severe pain followed by vomitting. They have him so doped up on pain meds at the hospital to relieve his pain that he is barely there (mentally). Has anyone else experienced this? What do we do about it? My other question is odor...sorry...this is kinda gross...but when Lyle throws up or just hiccups there is a rotten smell...not your normal vomitt smell. I think he has a little infection around his feeding tube that they are attending to and that has a similar smell. I think I read somewhere that and internal odor was a part of this journey...but I can't remember. Do you know?

    I am so sorry you are both having to go through this. How horrible it must be. I have not had this experience, but I know that others here have. I am glad that he is still in the hospital. I feel that is where he needs to be. I hope they are treating him with antibiotics for what sounds like an infection. We will be lifting both of you in prayer today. Keep in touch.

    Lyle is on 2 anti-nausea meds, zofran and compazine. Emend is not recommended due to his kidney issues. Lyle does have a stent...and we were going to have it removed because we think a lot of his pain is coming from that...but tissue has grown around it and it cannot be removed without risk of tearing the esophagus. So with that said...no one thinks it has moved since it is now a part of his body. Lyle has tried to take liquids by mouth...but they come right back up.

    I am feeling soooo sad today! I am 47, though, and hormones could be a big part of that!! HAHA!!!

    Rotten smell
    New to site but just read your post and wanted you to know that my dad had the smell. He was in the hospital and began throwing up blood. Cat scan was done showed a 2 cm mass in chest wall close to where the previous tumor was in the esophagus [which he had MIE]. Bronchoscopy was done it showed infiltration of cancer in bronchial tube. Dad also had hiccups with j-tube usually after meds and flushes were given but not as severe. Can he take medication for hiccups I think Valuim helps. Just a thought. So sorry. This cancer sucks. Stay strong. Will pray for you and Lyle.

    I really appreciate your input. I will be going to the hospital early tomorrow morning and try to catch the doctors. I will mention the smell, again, and see if they have an idea of a plan for him. No chemo this week...his white blood cell count is going up after having a neupogen shot. still lower than the low normal...but it's going in the right direction. He is being fed 100% through the feeding tube. They increased his food today and he threw up some of it up. So...we'll see what tomorrow holds.

You are allowed to be sad. Just don't stay in that mood too long. You have to pull up your boot straps and keep moving on! You are the captain of Lyle's team, you must remain strong.     I've started reading the site again. I had to write you. My dad had horrible hiccups when the stent was put in. His also dislodged and was stuck in the stomach. They did have to remove it because it was causing so much pain and they believed it was causing an infection. I hope they can resolve this problem for him. My dad's G-tube also pretty much stayed infected. It's all so hard. He was also on the same anti nausea meds too. I'll keep praying they can resolve some this for him. I know it's so hard to see him dopped up on those meds. Have they talked to you about blood transfusions?? That scared the crap out of me, but it did do my dad a world of good. His counts leveled out and he felt so much better.

    Keep the faith and 47 isn't old --- one good thing about being in the hospital is that at least they can give Lyle fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated. My dad also had to have emergency surgery to remove the stent from his stomach and replace it --- fell in because the tumor shrunk have the doctors looked to make sure the stent is still there? My dad went over a week with pain, not being able to eat or keep fluids down all the while the doctors saying it was because the radiation was causing the discomfort and gave him lydicane to swallow to deaden the esophagous. So finally when he hadn't been able to eat or drink for days he was taken back to the hospital and guess what when they looked there wasn't a stent anymore. Amazing.

    Hope all this clears up for Lyle soon so you can get back on your lake and fish.

    Susie,

    The odor you smell is from the numerous things. Jeff would belch and let me tell you it smelled worse than ROTTEN GUT, not sure the smell but it stunk. He had this for about 9 months before and after surgery.

    I know how you feel about the smell, sometimes it was so bad it made me want to throw up.
