Gallbladder removed, but still iffy about Saturdays 5K with the Kindred Spirits :(

Quick update! My gallbladder surgery went smoothly, my surgeon said my insides were "unremarkable"...sheesh! LOL

I got to be the drop-dead gorgeous interns study! Just what I wanted to be~NOT! At one point I had 3, count em 3, surrounding my bed asking if I minded if they lifted up my gown to look at my stomach. In another life I would have responded differently to that question! My sister said they chose me cuz I am such a hottie~ we laughed so hard! I said yeah, if your idea of "hot" is a belly looking rather like oatmeal stuffed in a baggie! Oh to be 25 again...sigh

The only glitch was from the trach during the anesthesia. Not sure what happened, but I will call the surgeon today and ask. When I was still groggy in the recovery room, I could feel my lip was tacky/sticky. I touched it and I was bleeding! I have a huge lump and cut on the inside and outside of my mouth. Also, by the time I got home (YAY!) yesterday afternoon, my jaw line and neck were swollen, and I am bruised. all the way around the jaw. It seems to me perhaps the trach tube didn't want to come out, and they had to use actual physical force to remove it! That thoght freks me out in hindsight, and if it is indeed wha happened, I imagine it freaked them out too! But no one mentioned a thing...and I didn't know that my jaw/throat were going to be sore and bruised or I would have said something at the hospital. I had to keep an ice pack on all for quite some hours last night. It doesn't seem much better this morning yet. Not good for the ego to have eaten only non fat and then clear liquids for a week and come out of the hospital with my face fatter than when I went in! LOL

On to the 5K~ My uber-sweet, protective Reggie wants me to take it easy and NOT go! I know his heart is in the right place and I have been through a lot, but I want to go! I was so encouraged by the response from the RNs and the interns. They were excited about it, and said walking is the exercise of choice after gallbladder surgery. I was told to listen to my body, and perhaps walk at 60% of my normal pace, drink lots of water on the route, and STOP if I didn't feel right. A no brainer! I couldn't wait till Reggie heard that! So~ when the Dr came in to discharge me, and he was standing next to Reggie...I asked the Dr "permission" just knowing he was going to be impressed and give me a big thumbs up! Ya know the adage about assuming??? My Dr is in Reggie's camp! He made a big frowney face and said...."uh, I don't know about that one, Claudia. Saturday is a bit too soon to be considering that."
WTH?????

So I am in the doldrums. I will do what is best for me physically of course; if you ask those McDreamy interns ( tho my latest swoon is one of the guys on Trauma!) they will tell you I no longer have the body of a 20-something. It may indeed be too much, afterall.

So much for the quick update; it turned into the next chapter of my Great America Novel! Sorry about that!

I'll keep you posted!

Hugs,
Chen♥

    Claudia, glad to read you
Claudia, glad to read you made it through the surgery but sorry to hear you have some wounds from it. Hopefully, they heal fast. As far as the Relay this weekend, even if you can't be there in person, you will be there in spirit. I think under the circumstances that is totally acceptable. Perhaps even if you can't do the walk you can go to the site and meet up with some of our pink sisters.

Let me know when your novel is scheduled to be released, I definately want to read that one. LOL! I love your writing and your sense of humor, as well. Take care of yourself and wishing you a speedy recovery. (((Hugs)))

    You are so generous~ thanks
You are so generous~ thanks so much for the offer. We have booked a hotel room for Friday night ( as t-shirt pick up etc starts at 7AM and as you know it can be a 2 hour+ drive from where I live to LA). IF I don't go, as we have 3 race-days bibs, my niece and 2 of her friends are going to fill in for Reggie and me. Siobhan was going anyway, so she will just get 2 girlfriends to do the 5K with her in case I am rooting from a mental sideline in Santa Ynez!

    Glad the surgery went well,
Glad the surgery went well, sorry about the throat (ugh), and sorry about the 5K. Could you possibly just start the race and then bow out? This might help satisfy your wanting to do this. Or just like us, cheer them on. Again I am so happy all went well. I never get good looking interns, but that might be good as you say. I am not a vision so not sure I would want them looking me over.
Enjoy the 5K in any way you can.

Good news, not so good news
The important part is that your surgery went smoothly and you are on the road to recovery. Unfortunately that road seems to be a bit longer and rockier that we had all hoped.

Just listen to your body and don't overdo it. We would LOVE to see you at the 5K, but would LOVE even more to know that you're doing the best job you can to heal yourself and get well.

You will be with us whether we're lucky enough to see you physically or not.

Thanks for posting to let us know you're (mostly) OK. Hope the throat feels better soon.

    Hugs,
    Cindy

it's always a two sided coin isn't it?
So glad the surgery went smoothly, so sorry you had the trach issue. That does seem kind of weird, I would ask what happened just because.
Sorry to say I am also in Reggie's camp, even though we would have met at the event, I would worry about you trying this so soon after surgery. I have your name on my bib (and everyone elses too), so you will be covered!
Take is easy and let Reggie take care of you.

    glad things went well. I
glad things went well. I always seem to have a fat lip when I get intubated they dont move the tube and it rests in one spot and causes a sore. I have had a sore throat, and needed cepacol, but never a swollen jaw and neck, you should speak to anesthesia about that, someone was rather rough, or they had a hard time getting the tube in. You would need to know if you are a difficult intubation. I agree with reggie, you could be pushing it, and end up being set back. Its not an easy surgery and you need to take care of yourself.

    YEAH
So glad surgery is over and you did well. Except for the jaw thing. I worked in surgery for 10 years and never heard of anything like that. I suspect if they knew how badly they messed you up (before you left) it would have been checked out more thoroughly and you both would have been prepared for what you ended up with. I would suggest calling and speaking with the unit manager. She/he needs to know what happened. That would have been a BIG DEAL in the hospital I worked in. Do they need to create a better process for reporting and following up on problem intubations/extubations? Exactly what went wrong---you need to know to tell future anesthesiologists (hope you never need another one!). I really think you should be evaluated for significant or lasting injury. Not like life threatening or anything, I'm thinking like jaw problems (?TMJ) or neck issues. If you need physical therepy or other therapy or evaluation it needs to be on their dollar not yours.

Sorry, I'm on my soap box again. I HATE it when the medical community doesn't provide the care they are supposed to.

I know you are dissapointed about the 5K but, it's important that you take care of yourself and not over-do. There's always next year!

Rest up. Healing energy coming your way!

    Oh so glad...
You're home and that all (well, almost all) went well, dear Kindred Spirit. Sheesh - hope your face and mouth heal quickly. And, I truly understand your disappointment about missing the Revlon walk. I felt exactly the same way last October.

How many times (many, many!) have you posted these words here on the board:

We do what we have to do, so that we can do what we want to do.

I know many of our pink sisters have gratefully used your precious words of wisdom as a mantra to help get them through their worst days of treatment. You need to heal now - so that you can ROCK that Revlon walk next year. :-)

Take good care, friend. Yes, keep us posted.

    Kindest regards, 12/25

What good news that all went well. Take care of that 50 ft. body. Just close your eyes and take 5 steps. With that 50 ft. body of yours, you will have covered most of the race. No sweat. xoxoxoxo Lynn

    So glad the surgery went
So glad the surgery went well and hoping that you'll heal quickly from the surgery and also your jaw/neck. Susan said it so eloquently by repeating the words of wisdom that you often 'speak'. Please take care of yourself and allow yourself to heal.
