Going for an MRI

I'm going for an MRI this morning and didn't realize how nervous I actually am. First, because I have/had very dense breasts at the time of my last one, the readings on my right breast (the good one) were not clear. HUH? Thanks for letting me know this now! I had inquired about a bi-lateral as I really didn't want to be faced with this. My surgeon didn't want to do a bi-lateral and convinced me that because of the type of cancer, there was only a 2% chance that I would get it in the other breast. And now I have to go for a follow-up MRI because it wasn't clear??? I've been doing nothing but thinking about how I would feel if they find cancer in my other breast. I'm wishing more than ever that I insisted on the bi-lateral because this worrying could consume me. The 2nd reason I'm nervous is that I don't like getting an MRI. I don't have good veins and so that's my first problem. I wonder if they can use the port? Then, lying there on my stomach with my face through a hole makes me extremely anxious.

I wasn't going to post this as I thought it would make it feel like a bigger deal than it is, but I wanted to make sure I had you all with me and a few prayers would be helpful.

Thank you!

With love, Mar

Mar, we all have felt the same, especially about MRIs, and I will be praying for you today. It is good that your doc wants to be absolutely sure your other breast is fine. Focus on how extremely low the odds of cancer in that other breast are, and how your doctor is just being thorough and taking no chances.

You can, I believe, have the port used for the MRI. I've had one done: I spent the whole time praying my favorite prayer. This had the bonus of keeping my mind from wandering in directions I didn't want to go.

It might help also to plan on treating or pampering yourself in some small (or larger) way after the test (me, I opt for turtle sundaes or a visit to our local bookstore). We all will be with you and sending you positive thoughts and prayers.

As for the prophylactic mastectomy option, I'm going to pursue it with my doc, too. Wish we could get together and gang up on them!

Mar, sending strength your way. I'm not a fan of the MRI either but it didn't take too long and was doable. Sing the House of the Rising Sun to the Gilligan's Island theme song while your lying there face down. I knew that knowledge would come in handy on day, Chen. Seriously though, we'll all be there with you in spirit. You can do it!! Good luck and let us know those clean results just as soon as you can. ((((HUGS))))

    You can do it!
    Mar,
You have such a positive outlook on life. I know right now it's a little shaky, but overall, it's in there. You know we'll all be squeezing into the room with you, sending prayers and good thoughts to get you through this. And especially waiting for a good report!! Deep breaths, now..

    Make room for me!
The room will be crowded, Mar, so make sure the techs know you have company with you when you arrive!

I'm sure you will get through it fine, and we'll all be anxiously awaiting the good news from the results. Sending prayers in the meantime.

    Take care,
    Cindy

    Yuck to MRI's!
Praying for you too Marlene! I hated the MRI! At least the techs put some cool music on that I could hear and they talked to me which made it a little easier. They also let my husband come in the room with me. Waiting to hear your "good" results!

    Best wishes to you, Mar...
Hoping for "clean" results from your MRI today.

Yes, all of these types of tests ARE always a big deal for us. Again, I'll be hoping for the best.

    Kind regards, Susan

    Marlene,

Good thoughts and prayers. Anxiety is so high for these tests. Have you asked if you can use something to relax you before? Hoping they can use your port and that the results of all of this is good.

I couldn't use the port, Moopy! Bummer, but I got an excellent tech who put it in my hand and it didn't hurt in the least... YAY! I was going to plan on a special treat afterwards, as I was going to go into work, but decided I might skip that and go over and see a friend who is retired and usually home most mornings. I was gonna bring some coffee & donuts, BUT of all days, she went to her son's and wasn't around. So then, I did the right thing (or was it the wrong thing?) and went to work. At least, on the bright side, work won't be quite as stressful tomorrow.

Yes, after this, I think I may talk about having that 2nd one taken off with or before my reconstruction. However, I've heard of women getting recurrences even with a mastectomy... like how does that happen when all the tissue is gone???

Thanks SO MUCH for the prayers & good wishes. GOD, you are all the BEST! My son said I should try to take in some wireless headphones next time... hmmmm. At one point it sounded like the noises were saying 'YIPEE YIPEE YIPEE', lol, so I went with it!

Won't know anything for a day or two... hoping with everything I am that the doctor's office calls tomorrow so I don't have to think about it all weekend.

Glad you had a great tech
Glad you had a great tech Marlene! And, glad the MRI is over for you.

They can never get all of the breast tissue, even with a mastectomy. There is one post on this week of a bc survivor that had a recurrence after a mastectomy by her incision. From what I know, you have the same chance of a recurrence with a mastectomy as with a lumpectomy followed by radiation treatments.

You do what is best for you Marlene, and, whatever will give you peace of mind!

Good you posted so that we knew you got thru the MRI ok!

Whew....glad that's over aren't you? I'm happy you made it through ok. That's funny how you went with the tune! :-) Maybe that was a sign of good things to follow...??? I wanted to respond to your earlier post, however all I could think about was how they "Didn't" use my port and the Tech blew out my vein, didn't think you wanted to hear that so I waited for the news you were done. (Sorry)
My Onc just told me he went to a conference recently and they were discussing using the MRI's more for women with dense breast due to so many mammograms not detecting the cancer. That's a good sign! :-) It wouldn't be so bad if they could find a way to do it without the IV.
I would think your doc would know something tomorrow. I hope you hear from them so you don't have to worry all weekend.
    Prayers for NED results

    MRI, Double Mastectomy,etc, etc
Hi Marlene and everyone, I'm new to this discussion board, and to breast cancer. I had a mass which was diagnosed after my core biopsy as Papilloma (which can turn into cancer over time - my second in 4 years). But when it was surgically removed (2/11/2010), pathology noted a small cancer attached. Now I have to have Sentinel Nodes removed for testing, and better margins in a follow-up surgery. I've had the MRI, CT Scans, and Bone Scan to check for spread - no cancer found anywhere - Praise God!! I did take Ativan for relaxation before my MRI & CT Scans and it helped so much! My surgeon prescribed it. I have been given the option of the minimal surgery I mentioned, or bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I need to gather more info. before the decision. Do you still have to have mammograms or MRI's with mastectomy? For early stage BC, what about chemo or prevention meds (for my estrogen positive)?

Hello, Apat, and welcome here, though I am sorry for the reason. You will find much support and valuable information here.

I can answer one of your questions: with mastectomy, you will not have mammograms. I am not sure about after reconstruction as I have not done that yet. If the cancer you had was estrogen positive, I would expect you to be given some hormone therapy. Most bc is hormone-positive, so you will get some great responses. You might want to start a separate thread so others can welcome you, too.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.
