Hi pinks....was wondering if any of you had trouble with your lungs after surgery, my surgery was over 7 hours and it took a long time to get my lungs going again. I was a smoker of 25 years (havent smoked since surgery). Then 16 days after my surgery I wound up in the emergency room unable to breath. I had a needle drain done on my latissimus dorsi the previous day so they checked for a puncture, no puncture, they checked for pneumonia, no pneumonia, they went to do a cat scan and check for blood clots, the fluid from the scan filled my arm up because my vein was blown, they tried 6 times and kept blowing out veins so they gave up and did a VQ Scan (not as good a scan nor as accurate) it came back ok. They sent me home 6 hours later with an antibiotic and an inhaler. I thought I was better yesterday and then this morning I woke up completely unable to breath again. What in the world....anyone have this????

I would call the doctor and
I would call the doctor and check. I just had two short procedures and was intubated for them. I was coughing for a couple of days and made a point of coughing and taking deep breaths. whenyou have surgery sometimes you get little areas of collapse that require reinflating. esp with a 7 hour surgery. the post op pain, and smoking. Just call your doc and make sure he goes over the tests from the ER . ER docs are there for the short term and are specialists in ER. but they may have not thought of everything.

This was one of the complications I was instructed to call the MD "immediately". I know you were at the ER yesterday, but today it returned. Please call your MD and let us know.

I am not a smoker but I do

I am not a smoker but I do remember after 10 hrs of surgery my lungs being shot. Apparently they get filled with fluid. I wanted to cough up the fluid but my stomach hurt so much (from DIEP flap surgery) so I couldn't. I hyperventilated twice in the hospital, just couldn't get enough air in my lungs. They gave me oxygen. I couldn't barely blow into that contraption to measure how well your lungs are doing. I tried. Fortunately it got better for me.

Wish I could suggest a quick home remedy for you however I do recommend you call your doctor immediately or go back to emergency. It might be that you still have fluid in the lungs or something else going on that you really need to get checked out or keep on it until the doctor's can figure out what is going on.

    best wishes.

    You Poor Thing
Call your Doc and tell him what is going on. Sometimes after surgery, your airway become irritated especially if they put a breathing tube down you. It will take time and meds to get rid of the irritation. But call your Doc and see what he says.

    Take care,

    P

    Lungs
Kari, like Carkris and others, I also hope you did report your breathing difficulty to your doctor this morning and that you are being treated. Definitely the difficulty counts as an emergency.

I did not have the exact situation you describe, but my right lung did collapse after my port was inserted on that side. I didn't realize this until it was an emergency. (Long story.) No one had told me of this possible complication, so I thought my increasing shortness of breath was cancer. I wasn't ready to deal with that, so I said nothing. One emergency procedure and two nights in the cardiac unit of a St. Louis hospital with a garden hose attached to my chest, and I was fine.

Wishing the best for you and that your problem has been treated, quickly and much more easily than mine was!

I was doing better so I
I was doing better so I didn't call doc today and then tonight, just now actually, I had a pretty bad attack. I'm calling my surgeon in the morning, he is the one whom I think would have the best answers. I had three surgeons in the O.R. but my mastectomy surgeon is the one I know personally. I'll let you know, it really is weird how out of the blue I lose all air and NEED an inhaler.
Love you guys, and I'll let you know what I find out

Kari, so sorry to hear of
Kari, so sorry to hear of this complication that you are having. I have never heard of this. I know that when I had my port put in they did an x-ray to make sure that my lung did not get punctured. That is the closest thing I can think of. Maybe you need a second opinion at another hospital? There's got to be an explanation for what you are experiencing. Please keep us posted. Sending a prayer for you.
