My son was wondering if there are any cookbooks with foods that are more recommended for cancer patients. He is 31 and was just diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer, so are just starting our research. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Linda

Linda,

I am so sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis. As a mother of a nearly-grown daughter, I can only imagine how devastating this must feel. This is a very good place for you to share whatever is on your plate.

As for your question, I assume your son will have surgery followed by chemotherapy? This being the case, in the short run he will need a diet of easy-to-digest food, because most colon cancer patients have a section of their color removed in surgery. He will just heal from that when the chemo will start, and the diet then becomes 'whatever he can eat' because nausea is a common side-effect. So, you are a few months away from needing to create a cancer-suppressing diet.

Special diets get discussed on these boards often, and many people have strong beliefs on the subject. In research studies, I believe the only significant results known are that a high fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains reduces colon cancer risk.

Thank you for your input. We are so new to this whole thing that most of it totally overwhelming. Unfortunately he has to have the chemo first n hopes that it shrinks the tumors, especially in the liver and then will ahve surgery if chemo is successful. He was the one wondering about cookbooks. The one thing everyone that I have read says on the subject of diet is that we probably should try to cut out quite a bit of the red meat. That is going to be a tough one since we all like hamburgers and steaks but we will do what we have to do. So I think I may be looking for good recipes with more turkey, fish, and chicken in it and some pork probably.

There are several cookbooks for cancer patients. Just google cancer cookbooks. There are so many diets, and trains of thought and beliefs regarding food, so I am not sure what direction you are looking.

Hope this will help.
