update on my dad - not good

Things aren't going well at all. He had his G tube and that went well. Friday night he ended up in the ER with a swollen stomach and an oozing tube. It's infected. They cleaned it up and sent him home with antibiotics. Yesterday he had his 1st chemo, 5FU and oxiplatin. They got home late, around 9 and my dad starting throwing up. Apparently he threw up all night. He's now back in the ER at Hopkins this morning. He's in pain and completely miserable. The Drs. told my mom they will get his settled and then come out to talk to her. I'm waiting for her to call me back. Of course, I'm fearing the worst news possible. He's never been this sick so soon after chemo, usually a day or 2 later. My mom seems to think it was blood. I'm really nervous waiting to hear the pending news. Please say a prayer for him. His name is Widolf Gunther Knittel (German name) I'm thinking he's going to stop the fight, who can blame him. I'm praying this is just a bump in his road. He's stage 4 inoperable. Sorry for the rambling, I'm very nervous.

I just got back from the hospital, he's at our local hospital, not at Hopkins as I originally was told by the neighbor. Anyway, he has color in his face now, but they removed the 5FU pump and are keeping him hydrated and on anti nausea drugs. My mom did mention they hydration after chemo to his Dr. and she wasn't really going for it, but we will insist on this. I will also ask about the emend as well. He's disappointed that they removed the chemo, but he can't go on being sick like that. They admitted him, hopefully to be released tomorrow sometime. They will need to call his oncologist tomorrow to get things straightened out. He seems to want to continue on. While he was vomitting my mom says it's clumpy. I had to leave the room when he got sick, that tends to make me sick when I hear the sounds. I know that's bad, but I can't handle that!! Anyway, the were getting settled in the room now, so my mom is going to call me back. He was also experiencing a lot of pain as well. Thanks for the prayers, I'll update again tomorrow.

    Erika,
    Keep the faith ---

    Erika,

Keep the faith --- don't know how much coordination is going on with your father's local doctors and the Hopkins staff, but perhaps you can speak to the docs at Hopkins and discuss options with them then try to coordinate. I have found sometimes the local docs don't fully appreciate the advanced techniques that the cancer centers are using to diminish the side effects of chemo, nor sometimes do docs want a "non-medical" person telling them what to do. But as an advocate for our parents we are exactly that cog in the wheel, the pain that won't take no so keep up the good work and keep the faith.

Also, I know that some of the chemo agents have different side effects and depending on your dad's medical condition some may be easier for him to tolerate than others.

I'm sure your parents are grateful for your help, even if they don't always tell you.

    Best,
    Cindy

    Prayers coming your way
I think that if he wants to continue on, that's his choice and I'd support him. He is the only one who can make that decision. Truly, we love our family members, but we don't have to walk in their shoes. We can't know their deepest thoughts...we can only love on them.

I know you must be totally stressed out right now. Prayers going up for you and for your dad...for the entire family.

    Hugs,
    Betty

    Hi Erika,
You are at yet another bump in this road. Prayers are being said right now. Hope by today things have gotten a little better. The emend will help. Stay positive, stay strong. Keep asking those questions. My dad has just finished his first week of xeloda chemo and is now on a week break. So far so good. Thinking of you today. :) Hello to you Kim! Miss seeing you on here.

    Dad
    Hi Erika,
so sorry your Dad is going thru this. I wonder if they gave him the anti nausea drugs?? I thought that was standard protocol for all chemo. He has had so much going on but I am amazed that he is that strong he wants to continue. You have one very brave Dad. I will be praying for him that this all straightens out. It is a lot for you and your Mom also. Prayers and psychic hugs coming your way. take care,
    Donna70
PS. I just thought of Ativan too for nausea, two of my friends with cancer take Ativan for the nausea and also nurses have told me to ask the dr for it if I get the nausea. Just FYI.
