I am curious. Is there anyone older than me on this site? I just turned 69 years old in January. I might be 69 years old in body but my mind is very young. And...I am still working full time as an Administrative Assistant. I am half Italian and half Polish. I do believe that I get my stamina from the Polish side of the family. (I live in a suburb of Chicago which has the most Polish population outside of Poland...so I am told.)

And..I lead a very active life. So to the younger ones, don't be afraid of my age.

I'm 57, Janelle, and as far as I'm concerned, 69 is not old at all! Some of my closest friends are in their 70s & 80s--wise women! One of them, mid-to-late 70s, travels all over the world--she just returned from a trip to Australia.

People should not write off anyone, male or female, who is over over 50, or over 60, or over 70, or over 80, or over 90 . . . . the wisdom acquired over a lifetime should not be ignored!

Dear Jeanne,

Now I know. Your profile states your age as 19 or younger which I have wondered about more than once. To be so young and have such wisdom, I marveled at these qualities that you possess.

I tried to reply to your last posting on this thread, but for whatever reason, it would not allow me to respond to the one where you admitted to being in the Witness Protection Program. Was it government interference that prevented the access? That posting did bring a smile to my face.

Fondly,
Janelle

Yes to your question. Sometimes the government does run interference in correspondence to me as they are trying to protect me so diligently. Are you Laughing?

I thought I was the oldest ... but you've got me beat by a few years. I'll be 66 in March ... and I too and still working full time as an Administrative Assistant. There are times when I can't believe I'm this old ... there are other times when I feel 166. Chemo brain scared me to death because I truly thought I was losing my mind. I had no memory and no concentration or focus. Thank goodness I have a terrific boss who had more patience with me than I could ever imagine. I finished chemo the end of May and was terrified that alzheimers had hit me ... hard... but I am slowly feeling some of those brain cells get into gear again.

It sure is an adventure ... isn't it????

hugs.

I'll be 69 next week - this winter I've been feeling much older, and really dreading that new number. At the same time, I'm SOOO happy that I'm still around, and hope to be for many years to come. I'm no longer working; retired at 65, well before all this started and did quite a bit of fun traveling before my dx last April.

Everyone, just remember - ACS is the Official Sponsor of Birthdays!

I am going to be 57 this month, and I never gave much thought to age. A positive attitude and taking one day, and problem at a time is the key. My wonderful mom will be 82 (you would never know it) and her and my husband are my best friends in the world. Stay active like you are!! It's always nice to read posts like yours. By the way, I'm Italian and Polish also. Best cooks in the world!! God bless all of you!!

I'm only 63 1/2. My body tells me that I'm 'old' (the last 6 months with 5 of them being Chemo hasn't helped) but I will never let who I am get 'old'. 3 of my G-grandmothers lived healthy into their mid to late 90's. 1 was still riding her mare daily (aside of course as she was a "lady") until the mare got injured and had to be retired but Mom F died before her new horse was shipped down from KY.

I thought I was about the only one in my sixties, I'm thrilled to know I'm not. But I've been shocked to see so many young women in the 30's and 40's with bc. My neice was 44 when dx.

I was very lucky and retired when I was 55, who hoo! I think we grew up seeing our Grandmothers who at 60 were old, not so anymore. And I feel 20 or 30 years younger than 67. It's all about attitude. My body is healing from these past 7 months but the beast is not going to get my spirit, at least not on most days!

Hugs all, Judy :-)

Age is nothing but a number!!!
my grandmother turned 100 last may, lives in manhattan & still rides the subway to her part time (by choice) job 2 days a week. shes the life of every party, is always the most fabulous lady in the room, & is "chock full" of the best advice & the most colorful stories!
shes quite the inspiration on those days that i feel less than motivated!

I hope that I am as lucky as your grandmother to be as agile and mentally alert when I reach that age. She certainly is your inspiration. How lucky you are to have her. I certainly would love to meet her.

Age is a number. Unfortunately some of my girlfriends were already old (mentally) when they reached the age of 40.

A person must be positive and not afraid to age. Embrace life and all it offers you.

Fondly,
Janelle

Janelle I turned 67 on Jan 15. You have 2 years on me. I worked full time up till August of last year when I had my 2nd surgery. I'm full blooded Italian/Sicilian. I also have lots of drive and spunk. Chemo has kicked my butt but not my spirit. There are ladies on this website who are older than us, but you'd never ever know it unless they tell you.

Abraham Lincoln once said: :"It's not the years in your life that count: it's the life in your years." Since I can't quantify the life in my years, I have concluded that I am ageless!

I think I might be the oldest one here, I'm just past 70. Most days I feel like a 40 year old, seems like that was my prime time. I have a lot of things to contend with, diabetes, asthma, high bp, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, and now bc but I'm determined to live each day to the fullest and keep looking ahead. I like to think I'm ageless but there are days when its not easy. My advice is "Never give in and Never give up". Just keep putting one foot in front of the other one. May we all have many more birthdays in the coming years.

If that is a recent picture of you, you look absolutely fabulous for 70. I hope I look that good! I will be 61 this year. I can't believe it either - I still feel like 25 mentally. The only thing that makes me feel old is the music - I don't understand the new stuff. LOL

My Dad asks me if I am ever going grow up. My response? Growing up is optional, and I opt not to grow up. LOL. It keeps me feeling young. This disease can be a pain in the tush, but it cannot take my souls, or my sense of humor. The day I act my age? That's when I and everyone else will begin to worry. God Bless

Janelle,
I say birthdays are good! I had a professor in college who turned 50 and made sure everyone knew how upset she was about it. I had just found out my Sister (age 40 at the time) had BC at the time and got tired of her complaining, so I told her, "the way I see it, another Birthday is a good thing, and if you don't want one, you can do something about it." She quit complaining in my presence. My sister was a survivor for 6 years, and I am a 3 year survivor, currently age 45. More power to ya, all you lovely ladies!

seof

PS
Skeezie, what are you doing with my cat in your tent? Seriously, they could be twins! Mine has a little "fish hook" of a tail, though. Not sure if she was born that way because she chose to end her life as a self-sufficient hunter and join our crew as an adult.

Our little girl joined us at 5 weeks of age and her sister, all black 2 weeks later. Both really sweet kitties. Bootsie (original name huh..my husband named her lol )has a little white tip on her tail and her front paws are white "slip-ons" and her hind legs are "thigh-high" white boots. Your kitty could have some manx cat in her which could account for her stubby tail, but alas, she could be like one of our other kitties (now departed) who was an adult when we rescued her and half of an ear and half of her tail were missing from frost bite.

Don't ya just love 'em all?

Janelle, thank you so much for starting this thread. I have often wondered just how old the board members were, but have not asked. Usually when these kind of things are posted, everyone will share information, and this is a fun thing to read. I turned 65 in September, and really don't feel as old as my years. Everyone looks so good, and I know you are enjoying life, no matter what your age. Congratulations to you all...really fun! Hugs, Judy

My age is what I tried to use as an excuse for not taking the chemo, after being told I needed it. I kept saying "that stuff will kill me, at my age". I told my daughter that, and she had a fit !! She's an R.N. at the Cancer Center I go to, and has to administer chemo everyday.. She says basically I'm healthy as a horse, and I didn't need to use my age as an excuse, because her oldest patient receiving chemo right now is 84, and doing great! So that made me feel much better.!!! And I know I am so blessed. I had total knee replacements 7 yrs. ago, and Carotid Surgery on one side, 8 yrs. ago.. That's it. No other health issues, except this BC that slipped in on me, and hopefully after I finish these last 2 chemo treatments, then radiation for a few weeks, I will be able to put this behind me also. Just want to stay well so I can continue to enjoy my beautiful grandchildren, and celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary in July with a return trip to Texas where we lived when we first got married.

Hi Janelle,
I turned 59 in January. I keep finding that everytime I turn a year older that the idea of what is old keeps moving further away. Maybe an even 100 is a good age to become old.
Hope you have a great day.

Nell

Hey Skeezie, do you know the origin of your name? Just curious if there were any popular people around when you were named Judy? I was born during WWII, and Judy Canova was popular. My Mother's name was Julia, and they choose to go with Judy as my given name rather than Julia. There are popular names for each generation, and I guess I was the 40's. Hugs,

Judy

but I guess I have to tell.... just turned 60 in Dec. YUCK, can't believe it!
I am the youngest one in my chemo group, though. Makes me feel like a kid when I go.
I should say "went" now that it's over.

I feel about 39 most days. And sometimes I pass by a mirror and think, "Who is that old lady??? Can't be ME!!"

I was born Nov., 1942 and there was always at least one other Judy in my classes at school. I think it was a popular name back then. My actual name is: Judith Lynne, my mother thought it sounded "musical". lol She didn't belive in nicknames so she and then the whole family called me Judith or Judith Lynne except my brother who called me Judy cause he was called "John Richard" by you know who. I hated it until I became an adult and then I loved it cause it was what my mother called me...but only my mother, other than that is was Judy and all the other nicknames that go along with it. Did you get sick of hearing Cary Grant's Judy, Judy, Judy?

I have met a couple of girls 20 years or so younger named Judy and it surprised me. Just like all the old names that are poplular now, I'm sure our name will rise again!

Hugs, Judy :-)

Wow! It's great to know there are so many of us in our 60's and 70's. I've always thought I was the oldest on here, because there are so many women in there 30's, 40's and 50's. It's difficult for me to believe I'll be 68 tomorrow, but it's true. Where did all the years go? Anyway, let's all celebrate who we are, because I think this has to be the greatest and strongest group of women I have ever known, and I am proud to know you, no matter what our ages are. Thanks for all the help and advice you have given me over the last six months. Connie

Mary Ann,
I have asked if there are any local Chicagoland girls on this site. I got 3 responses. I find it hard to believe that there are only 3 on this site.

I am searching and searching and searching for an evening support group where we just talk. I finally found one - Evanston Hospital - Evanston, IL - Meets on the 2nd Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. I am going to attend this meeting this week.

I think somewhere I stated that I lived in Park Ridge.

Lots of Hugs,
Janelle

Hello to everyone who has responded to Different Ballgame's age question. Like Cypress Cynthia I too will be 57 in March and am so glad for that, for what is the alternative? I was diagnosed just before Christmas 2008 and started treatment last year and really feel that 2009 passed in a haze of chemo/surgery/radiation and other stuff. I truly believe in chemobrain and hope that, as they say, this too will pass!! Chemo and radiation have played havoc with my body and my mind. You are all such wonderful women, so strong and retaining a sense of humor and I find that keeping a healthy attitude, loving life and being able to laugh at myself without wishing to minimize anything is something that appears to be difficult for some people I know to handle! I wish I lived in Chicago so that we could start our own support group for some fun and sharing. I am a Brit living in Sherman Oaks, CA, and if anyone is interested in getting together, please let me know. My email address is ukkatie@aol.com. Take care, everyone - you look and sound amazing.

I was 57 last June when I got the diagnosis and have had my 58th birthday since then. At 57 my mother was diagnosed with the bone marrow cancer that eventually killed her 5 years later. So, I hope I get more than 5 years, since my cancer was only DCIS. Her sister, my aunt, died of lung cancer at 63. Her mother, my grandmother, was dead of colon cancer by 59. So I'm hoping I have my father's side genes where my grandmother and great grandmothers were in their 90's! Currently my father is 88 and almost healthier than I am! He dances; bowls twice a week, shoots skeet, pistol and 22 once a week; drives himself everywhere with no problems; still has all his own teeth and hair (white, but plentiful); cooks for himself from scratch; has a nice house; snow blows his driveway.... see what I mean? I hope I follow in HIS footsteps!

But cancer treatment has come a long way since your Mom, Aunt and Grandmother were dx. 20 or 30 years ago people got chemo and no Neulasta and when their WBC's dropped they had to stop chemo. My Mom died from colon cancer in 1984, if there had been Neulasta she mite have lived... So take heart, we are so much better off with the current treatments and early detection. You will probably be bowling and snow blowing at 88 too! I hope we all will be doing that too..

Hugs, Judy :-)

since I feel better today than I did 4 years ago, when I was dx. Doing the math, that makes me only 52, right? If this new trend continues, I'll be only 32 in five more rounds. That was a great age, because that's when my one and only daughter--who has been my greatest gift, came into my life.

I am 43 yrs, will be 44 in a couple of months. Diagnosis at 43 yrs. Just had my haircut really short in preparation of chemo in a couple of weeks. Now I look like I am 12 yrs old according to my 10 yr daughter. Told her, in that case I could be her sister! Would be fun to shirk responsibility for a while might be good for my overall well being. Hmmm ...no school tomorrow, maybe we could pitch the tent in the living room, ready scary stories with a flashlight, eat candy, tell knock knock jokes and stay up late.

I'm 50 and I don't feel old yet in spite of working with mostly people in their 30's. Someone has to be the oldest in the office. Seems like yesterday I was the youngest! (ok, it's been 25 years since I was the youngest) LOL

Hi there,

I'm 57. Just diagnosed Friday. Waiting for MRI, waiting for PET scan, waiting for surgery, waiting to find out will it be chemo, radiation, both. So far, all I've "survived" is a diagnosis. I've checked out every breast cancer book the library has. And then I found all of you. I believe you more than the books.

Thanks for being here.

I'm 43 & was diagnosed at 43...same age my mom was when she died from breast cancer. I've always joked & said I'll live to be at least 100, because only the good die young...lol. I bumped into a guy that took me to his senior prom last Feb & we were married in Oct, so I feel like a teenager again.

I've enjoyed reading your posts...would love to meet the grandmother in NYC.

I'm 48 and was 47 when diagnosed. Before BC, I felt and looked like I was in my 30's. Since chemo, I feel & look like I'm 100, although not so because it sounds like Aimee's grandmother has got me beat. By the sounds of this board, it seems she could have a lot of attendees to her 101st birthday party :)) I am amazed by the beauty I see here, both inside & out. Sunrae has blown me away! I've seen many of your posts and pegged you to be around my age. God bless us all for fighting this battle and winning. May we all live long enough to ride the subway @ 100!

So far it looks like I might have the dubious honor of being the oldest one here right now but I have heard of others who have had to battle cancer in their 80's and came thru ok, at least thats what my drs are telling me. Girls, you are all marvelous and beautiful at any age. We can beat bc and go on and have many more good years and that is my hope and prayer for all of you. I especially pray for all you younger ones who have had to do battle. Being young has some advantages and having more strength and energy certainly helps. But to have to face the beast while you still have families and so much more life to live takes a lot of courage, will power and faith. But you can and will overcome all this and have full lives ahead. I do plan on living quite a few more years myself. My son had his first baby last year. He told me he wants his son to get to know and love me for a long time to come. I told him I plan on giving him child-rearing advice for all those growing-up years. See, thats how it is going to be! Lets all grow old together (that means I'll still be the oldest but heck, who cares).
