NEW YORK – Showtime says it will be looking for laughs from cancer, of all things, in a new series starring Laura Linney.

Showtime announced Friday that "The Big 'C'" will begin shooting 13 episodes this spring for a fall debut.

It's billed as a dark comedy and centers on Linney as a reserved suburban wife and mother whose cancer diagnosis rocks her life, in some ways for the better. Oliver Platt plays her immature but well-meaning husband.

Linney has enjoyed success on the stage and in movies. She has landed Oscar nominations for her films "Kinsey," "You Can Count on Me" and "The Savages."

She won an Emmy for her TV role as Abigail Adams in the HBO miniseries "John Adams."

personaly I don't see anything funny about any cancer it is life changing but laughter is not one of the changes for me sorry I feel like it will be more to make fun of us unless she has had cc in real life and if so she is really sick to try to make lite of it...just my point of view.

    Not for me
I don't get Showtime, so I can't watch it, but I doubt if I would, anyway. For some silly reason, cancer's not all that funny to me (although we share some chuckles in here). I think the difference is that we've all been touched by cancer here; the people on the show are trying to make some money out of the "funny" situation.

    I'm sorry
I'm sorry, but I don't see any thing funny about cancer, especially after what most of us have been thru, including losing family members to cancer.Maybe there is a light side, and I just don't see it.Just my opinion.

    I wouldn't mind seeing it!
Sounds like fun, I know cancer isn't supposed to be funny, and I also have lost many of my loved ones to cancer, but there is a lighter side to it. Has anyone ever seen Richard Schimmell is it??? he had cancer, and makes fun of himself, and he cracked me up on his showtime comedy show. I think poking fun at one self and the cancer is healthy, laughing is what gets me going, it's the best medicine for me, they aren't poking fun at people dying from it, but some of the jokes of what one goes through can be funny, like me having my colostomy bag, I have stories with that, and people laugh with me, not at me, when I talk to them. It makes people more comfortable around you when you're smiling, I'd rather they do that, then have them think it's all gloom and doom...I don't want people to think we can't have a laugh :)

It would depend on what kind
It would depend on what kind of jokes they were.it's not so much the subject as it is the tastfulness and class of joke.
when i go for my chemo my friend Bonnie and my 2 chemo nurses
are always laughing and having fun.
this morning i went to church and was wearing a hat,
everyone knows i have cancer but only a few knew i was bald.
when we got to the part where people can ask for prayers for a particular
thing or say a praise,i whipped off my hat and made a joke.
    i got a standing ovation!!

    Kate...
I agree with you. I think it all depends on how tastefully the jokes are and what they are.

And I would have loved to see you whip off your hat in church. Girl, I would have stood up and clapped, too! I love your courage and bravery. I mean I love everyone's here, as well, but that was good. It sounds like something I would do. :o)
